This would be the case for our Whisper Path House, where the interior of the house needed to be completely overhauled to accommodate the owner’s dream retirement home. Two living areas and isolated kitchen, divided by a solid walls will merge together, creating a single open-concept living-kitchen-dining room within the heart of the home. The new kitchen features a massive 14ft long island, custom cabinets and a separate dishwashing area that overlooks the lush backyard. The spacious living room follows suite and features folding glass doors that allows the room to double in size by opening up on to an adjacent covered patio. Hammer & Hand built this custom listening room for a Portland audiophile. To isolate the room from the rest of the home and improve the listening experience the space includes a self-contained minisplit heat pump and a dedicated cryogenically-treated electricity system. Tibetan bowls allow the client to tune the room. Noted acoustic engineer Art Noxon positioned gray bass traps along the walls of the room so bass frequencies penetrate the walls instead of bouncing around the room. The team removed a bathroom to increase the size of the space to 11 x 17. Double sound attenuating doors lock sound into the room and keep the rest of the home quiet. The den serves as the hub of the Houde for this family. Opposite he picture window is the TV. Behind the chaise is a fireplace, bar and game table. The prior set up had two identical facing sofas that did not relate to the other functions of the room. By simply choosing a matching chaise opposite the sofa, and choosing the dimensions of them to be lower, the room came together as a multi-use space. The project involved opening the ceiling on the ground floor of a 1930s duplex and replacing the plaster finish with a gypsum ceiling system. Aluminum electrical wiring was also replaced to conform to current standards, and the existing lighting was exchanged for new pot lights in all rooms. Once the ceilings were opened, an acoustic, soundproofing insulation system was installed to absorb interior noise from the second floor of the duplex. The soundproofing system consists of blown wool insulation, padded with a thin layer of air between it and the gypsum ceiling finish, along with the installation of resilient bars. __________ Le projet consistait à ouvrir le plafond du rez-de-chaussée d'un duplex des années 1930 et à remplacer la finition de plâtre par un système de plafond de gypse. A common complaint from by clients is that their old kitchens are too isolated, so you end up with a lonely cook, or too many people in the kitchen visiting when the cooking needs to be done. The solution is simple—knock out some wall and create a living space which is integrated with the adjacent rooms, making the kitchen the center—or “heart”—of the home. It features rich dark green cabinetry that creates a sophisticated focal point while complementing the crisp checkered gray-and-white checkered pattern marble tile flooring.
