Inspiration for a modern bathroom remodel in Chicago

Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped a neighbor and friend to update a “builder grade” kitchen into a personal, family space that feels luxurious and inviting. The homeowner wanted to solve a number of storage and flow problems in the kitchen, including a wasted area dedicated to a desk, too-little pantry storage, and her wish for a kitchen bar. The all white builder kitchen lacked character, and the client wanted to inject color, texture and personality into the kitchen while keeping it classic.

Kitchen in a 1920s Colonial Revival home was totally gutted and renovated. In addition to updated electrical, plumbing, and lighting, new windows were added bringing in lots of natural light. Antique oak beams and used brick veneer provide contrast and lend a rustic touch. Warm site-finished white oak floors ground the space and provide more contrast, as do the natural grass shades. Stainless steel appliances provide a sleek modern edge without overwhelming the space, while a crackle subway tile accented with beaded and black liners give a nod to the traditional. Countertops of Olympian White Vermont Danby marble in the main work area have a subtle gray veining.

Pool: - 22’ x 44’ infinity edge pool (66’ infinity edge) - shallow-end sun shelf with five LED bubblers for light and water effect - three laminar jets out of the patio to put a jet of water into each corner of the pool - star field on pool floor with 100 points of light provided by four LED fixtures through fiber-optic cables (25 cables per fixture), subtle constellation within the hundred points of light star field - additional LED lights, glass tile trim, including glass edge tiles - hot tub on top of a raised marble stone wall perimeter overflow at the same height as the Brazilian teak wood deck; there is an under deck gutter 1/8 wide - hot tub is all glass tile with a recessed toe-kick that hides the drains and light fixtures - glass railing / barrier Living space: - travertine stone with marble veneer and Brazilian teak trim throughout - custom-built wood benches, mantle, pizza oven, grill, refrigerated drawers, sink - recessed screens that lower from the roof to enclose the entire living space when needed Landscape: - putting green, landscape lighting, under-cap lights - outdoor speakers and subwoofer

The exterior of what looks like a vernacular Hamptons shingle cottage, designed by architect Blaze Makoid, is intentionally deceiving. For the interiors, Axis Mundi typically decided not to play by the rules. Instead of de rigeur nautical artifacts, floppy sofas and wicker furniture, the firm responded to Makoid’s all-white interior envelope by injecting rooms with comfortable modern elegance that’s more contemporary Cap Ferrat than Eastern Long Island. Clean furniture silhouettes—from Cassina, Poltrona Frau and B&B Italia—a Massimo Vitali beach scene, a Moooi chandelier and industrial finishes (such as the steel of the fireplace surround and the anodized aluminum of a sleek Bulthaup kitchen) spark a creative tension between indoors and out. The gray palette provides a quiet backdrop for the nature outside, except for the master suite, where custom oak panels and blue shades create a reassuring warmth conducive to sleep. New babies have a way to raising the importance of additions and remodeling. So it was with this project. This 1920’ era DC home has lots of character, but not of space or bathrooms for this growing family. The need for a larger master suite with its own bath necessitated a 2nd floor bedroom addition. The clients wanted a large bedroom with a fresh look while still harmonizing with the traditional character of the house. Interesting water jet cut steel doors with barn door hardware and cathedral ceilings fit the bill. Contemporary lighting teamed with complex tile makes a good marriage of the new and old space. While the new mom got her new master suite, the new dad wanted an entertainment space reminiscent of his home in Argentina. The 2nd floor bedroom addition provided a covered porch below that then allowed for a very large Asada grill/fireplace. Argentinians are very serious about their barbeques and so was this client. The fireplace style barbeque has a large exotic grilling area along with a dedicated space for making his own charcoal for the grill. This nursery by Etienne Interiors features a transitional design which is fresh, modern and follows the trend of nurseries that look anything but. The client wanted to incorporate a colour scheme of black, white, gray and gold. Etienne Interiors infused this colour scheme with a pop of Kelly green to enliven the space with an otherwise mono tonal palette. The elephant theme was also updated by using graphic interpretations in black, white and gold. The overall feel of the room is very chic with the addition of the jet black campaign dresser and nightstand. The mid century inspired lighting with brass accents tie into the case goods pieces and provide a soft glow to the room for a sense of calm.

This dream pool made an appearance on the hit show, Pool Kings, featured on the DIY Network! Designed for family fun and entertainment...deck jets, a step up outdoor living area, and a step down fire pit area provide ample space for outdoor fun and eye catching appeal. A 16-jet, full body, 3-foot sports plunge in the spa, was added for a full body massage recovery and relaxation.

This complete backyard make-over includes a fiberglass swimming pool and landscape accents. Our favorite elements are the naturalized pool slide tucked into stone outcroppings with a matching waterfall. Both the slide and waterfall were selected for the natural colors and style desired for this backyard retreat. The vinyl pergola provides some afternoon relief from the sun. As an added benefit, the pergola frames a picturesque view of the woods toward the rear. Surrounding the pool and patio areas, a low-voltage lighting system provides illumination for evening parties. Winter nights are brightened with the warmth of these LEDs creating dramatic art. The energy-efficient lighting also provides safety & security at a low cost. The challenge on this project was incorporating all the desired elements and products in a tight spatial constraint of 9’ x 7.5’. The clients biggest concern in the old bathroom was inadequate storage, tired and under-utilized bathtub and they also needed an additional sink for their two daughters who often share this space. Renovisions recommended removing the wall between the shower and closet to gain additional floor space as you enter the bath, while providing wall space for the three towel bars. Collaborating with the clients and searching to find the right fixtures paid off nicely. This newly remodeled Renovision accommodated two rectangular sinks, a walk-in shower with hand-held shower, wall-mounted shower head and two soft spray body jets. The oil-rubbed bronze fixtures not only provided a luxurious spa experience, but also added warmth and softness to the vintage feel. The glass shower enclosure is trimmed in a matte black grid that boasts an industrial aesthetic with retro feel while delivering modernistic function. It’s unique in appearance while allowing the chic white subway and black and white diamond tile to peek through. The beautifully designed cabinetry in a matte black painted finish provides plenty of storage. This smart configuration included two banks of three drawers for toiletries and accessories, two towers with adjustable shelves for towels and two ‘garage’ doors for hair dryers. Another unique design detail to capture attention was the black and white curvy geometric floor tile which plays off the straight lines of the cabinets and square grids of the shower enclosure. The clients are thrilled with the results and their modern, high-contrast styled digs – a true customized relaxation sanctuary for the entire family.

This stunning pool in Valparaiso, IN measures 20’0” x 40’0”, and is 3’5” to 6’0” deep. The raised hot tub measures 8’0” x 8’0”. Both pool and hot tub are equipped with LED color changing lights. The sunshelf provides ample sunbathing opportunities as it possesses 122 square feet of surface area. 3 color-lighted Bubbler jets adorn the sunshelf providing a vertical element. There are two swim up benches at either end of the pool, and the entry is provided in the shallow area by a large set of elongated steps attached to the sunshelf. There is also a 40’0” lineal foot infinity edge feature with spillover waterfall, with lighting in the lower basin for accent. Glass tile is featured throughout the pool, hot tub, infinity edge and face, infinity edge basin, and pool cover housing. The pool is equipped with a hydraulic, automatic pool safety cover. At opposite ends of the infinity edge are 2 custom premium black fire bowls with automatic ignition feature. The pool is finished in Wet Edge pool surface.
