This was a contemporary 350 square foot addition to and complete renovation of an existing mid 20's beach cottage located on a double lot in the Harbor area of Santa Cruz. After a complete redesign and demolition 'down to the studs', this iconic seaside home was rebuilt from the inside out with top of the line materials and expert attention to every detail.
The Design and Remodeling work was preceded by our land use analysis with the Santa Cruz County Planning and Building Departments. Although this large lot could have accommodated two separate new homes, our client was intent upon preserving the charming early century look and lot positioning of the existing ninety year old home. In addition, she was in favor of preserving the large old Monterey Cypress tree located at the front corner of the lot. A consulting Arborist was brought in to support and judiciously trim the major branches in a successful effort to improve the health and stability of the heritage tree.

Ligne Roset Païpaï Sofa

Païpaï is a project which unfolded from a simple gesture: folding a piece of paper to create a closed shape. And thus, a visibly comfortable cocoon seat is born. The folds mark the foam, shaping its contours and giving emphasis to the armrests, thus creating the identity of the settee, which was named after the Pai-Pai fan which itself has a characteristic rounded shape. The Païpaï collection was designed to offer the best possible seat comfort thanks to the height of the back and the judicious use of high-performance foams.

We envision this room to be a retreat from the responsibilities of home and work. We kept the palate neutral and natural while introducing color judiciously with fine art and accent furniture to reflect the dual nature of the suite as a place for respite and delight. Some notable pieces featured in our room include a sumptuous wild silk carpet by Fort Street Studio and sculptural hand woven artist chair from Valerie Goodman Gallery.

Railroad tie steps.
This active family needed to overhaul this large property but didn't know where to start. "It's like three acres of boring dirt and weeds", said my client. The steeply sloped property did indeed present unique challenges with ever-present voracious deer, the need for erosion control and bank stabilization, large areas that required planting while still considering water conservation, and the need for beautification and modernization to tie into the aesthetic of the newly renovated home. Concurrently, safety and access to all parts of the property were a consideration. Landscaping goals were accomplished through careful plant selection and judicious use of retaining walls in various styles throughout the property. Generous railroad tie steps were used on sloping side yards. The landscaped portions converge gracefully with the existing oak woodland. Children can play and hide in many fun spots, while my client's elderly grandmother can safely walk around.

Thoughtful details abound in this traditionally styled hillside walkout plan. On the main level, a barrel-vaulted ceiling welcomes guests to the foyer with style. The kitchen, great room, and dining room flow together while still maintaining definition thanks to the judicious use of columns. The master suite is located on the main level for convenience. Downstairs is a rec room and two more bedrooms, each with a walk in closet.

Beautiful steps up the side of the home are flanked by textural shrubs, succulents and boulders.

When the homeowners purchased this sprawling 1950’s rambler, the aesthetics would have discouraged all but the most intrepid. The décor was an unfortunate time capsule from the early 70s. And not in the cool way - in the what-were-they-thinking way. When unsightly wall-to-wall carpeting and heavy obtrusive draperies were removed, they discovered the room rested on a slab. Knowing carpet or vinyl was not a desirable option, they selected honed marble. Situated between the formal living room and kitchen, the family room is now a perfect spot for casual lounging in front of the television. The space proffers additional duty for hosting casual meals in front of the fireplace and rowdy game nights. The designer’s inspiration for a room resembling a cozy club came from an English pub located in the countryside of Cotswold. With extreme winters and cold feet, they installed radiant heat under the marble to achieve year 'round warmth. The time-honored, existing millwork was painted the same shade of British racing green adorning the adjacent kitchen's judiciously-chosen details. Reclaimed light fixtures both flanking the walls and suspended from the ceiling are dimmable to add to the room's cozy charms. Floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of the space provide ample natural light to provide relief to the sumptuous color palette. A whimsical collection of art, artifacts and textiles buttress the club atmosphere.

2012 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL BATH UNDER $30,000
This piano teacher lives in a small townhouse on a beautiful lake in Reston, Virginia. While the home has a lot to offer, the third level master bath has always been a major issue.
While small and confined, the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes felt it had potential. By making better use of its sloped room and finding a bit of added space in an adjacent attic, the new design can truly be called a master bathroom.
The homeowner’s wish list included a large shower, a soaking tub and a long vanity with two sinks. With a built-in shower bench, storage niches, and a frameless glass enclosure, the new shower transformed the space. The soaker tub and judicious use of multi-colored tile emphasizes the contemporary flair the design has achieved.
The client greatly enjoys her dream bathroom. She has achieved her ultimate goal of large, usable bathroom with lots of amenities.
