The kitchen redesign was a testament to the perfect balance between style, functionality, and safety. Every detail was carefully considered, from the choice of high-end appliances such as the Sub-zero refrigerator, electric range, convention oven, and microwave, and Miele dishwasher, to the thoughtfully designed 180-cubic-feet of under-the-counter storage, outfitted with Hefele appliances and magic-corners, allowing for maximum efficiency and ease of use. The space planning was equally impressive, with a focus on optimizing every inch of the kitchen. A prime example of this was the vertical, touch-latch storage drawers for tableware built into an existing display niche, just within arm's length from the dishwasher, and hidden behind a beautiful pocket door. The result was a seamless design that combines practicality and aesthetics effortlessly. The pantry was another key element of the redesign, with a petite yet functional space set into a small area off the kitchen, just steps from the apartment entrance. The design ensured that every inch of the pantry was optimized, providing ample storage while still being visually pleasing. The objective was to create a warm neutral space to later customize to a specific colour palate/preference of the end user for this new construction home being built to sell. A high-end contemporary feel was requested to attract buyers in the area. An impressive kitchen that exuded high class and made an impact on guests as they entered the home, without being overbearing. The space offers an appealing open floorplan conducive to entertaining with indoor-outdoor flow. Due to the spec nature of this house, the home had to remain appealing to the builder, while keeping a broad audience of potential buyers in mind. The challenge lay in creating a unique look, with visually interesting materials and finishes, while not being so unique that potential owners couldn’t envision making it their own. The focus on key elements elevates the look, while other features blend and offer support to these striking components. As the home was built for sale, profitability was important; materials were sourced at best value, while retaining high-end appeal. Adaptations to the home’s original design plan improve flow and usability within the kitchen-greatroom. The client desired a rich dark finish. The architecture of this mid-century ranch in Portland’s West Hills oozes modernism’s core values. We wanted to focus on areas of the home that didn’t maximize the architectural beauty. The Client—a family of three, with Lucy the Great Dane, wanted to improve what was existing and update the kitchen and Jack and Jill Bathrooms, add some cool storage solutions and generally revamp the house. We totally reimagined the entry to provide a “wow” moment for all to enjoy whilst entering the property. A giant pivot door was used to replace the dated solid wood door and side light. We designed and built new open cabinetry in the kitchen allowing for more light in what was a dark spot. The kitchen got a makeover by reconfiguring the key elements and new concrete flooring, new stove, hood, bar, counter top, and a new lighting plan. Our work on the Humphrey House was featured in Dwell Magazine.
