When dreaming about the perfect master suite remodel, there are two important ingredients that are always in the mix– the closet space and the master bath. Too often, existing homes will have small closets and baths in the master suite leaving homeowners frustrated and ultimately unsatisfied. At Thompson Remodeling, we have seen our share of strange configurations, but that’s part of the fun. We enjoy the challenge of reconfiguring space to make it work better for our clients. In this recent master suite remodel, the existing floor plan had a small bath with vanities located in the bedroom not the bath, two reach-in closets, and a massive closet with a vaulted ceiling and skylight. Now, who doesn’t love a great big closet? But this one was roughly 11’x 14’ – big enough to be a bedroom! To start, we decided to get rid of the two reach-in closets to make the main section of the bedroom larger, a gain of 66 square feet. In the massive closet space we designed a spacious bathroom and dressing area. With a window and skylight already in place, there is a ton of natural light. Next, we swapped the original bath space out for a closet. The flow of this master bedroom is so much better now! Before, you would walk in to the room and be facing a double vanity sink. Now, there’s a small entryway that leads to a much more open and inviting space. The homeowners wanted an organic feel to the space and we used an existing corner fireplace to set the tone. Cream, muted grays and taupes are mixed with natural and weathered woods throughout. We replaced glass block with a barn door made of reclaimed wood. This creates a beautiful focal point in the room. In the bathroom, quartz countertops are accented with a stone mosaic backsplash. Maple cabinets with a java finish are a rich offset to the lighter wood vanity mirror and heated ceramic floor. We think this new master suite remodel is stunning! What a major improvement in the functionality of the entire space.

Party Palace - Custom Ranch on Acreage in Ridgefield Washington by Cascade West Development Inc. This family is very involved with their church and hosts community events weekly; so the need to access the kitchen, seating areas, dining and entryways with 100+ guests present was imperative. This prompted us and the homeowner to create extra square footage around these amenities. The kitchen also received the double island treatment. Allowing guests to be hosted at one of the larger islands (capable of seating 5-6) while hors d'oeuvres and refreshments can be prepared on the smaller more centrally located island, helped these happy hosts to staff and plan events accordingly. Placement of these rooms relative to each other in the floor plan was also key to keeping all of the excitement happening in one place, making regular events easy to monitor, easy to maintain and relatively easy to clean-up. Some other important features that made this house a party-palace were a hidden butler's pantry, multiple wetbars and prep spaces, sectional seating inside and out, and double dining nooks (formal and informal). Homeowners in Richfield came to Castle looking to update their 1956 Kitchen in their ranch style home. The goal was to keep the same U-Shaped footprint of the kitchen while maximizing the cabinet layout configuration. The overall transformation is stunning. One major adjustment was installing the upper cabinets to the ceiling. This draws your eyes up and gives the room a larger feel with the added storage that was previously nonexistent. The java color stained Crystal Cabinets are balanced with clean polished nickel hardware. Another part of the project that was important to the homeowners was lighting. The existing configuration was dark, with very little over head light or task lighting. With adding in disc LED light fixtures in the ceiling, decorative pendant and wall sconce lighting over the sink, the space now is light and bright even with selecting darker finishes. To top off this project, Designer Tracy O’Donnell curated a gorgeous tile feature above the farmhouse sink. The picture framed Carrara marble herringbone mosaic tile features natural colors that play off the countertop and warmth of the cabinets beautifully. Overall, the homeowners couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out!

These clients are your typical, plant-loving millennials who, slowly and on a budget, are bringing a unique vision for their home to life. Color, while important to every homeowner, was clearly important to these homeowners. With one homeowner being an artist with an affinity for pink, the couple went through a gamut of cabinet color options including olive, teal, navy, and mustard. Assisted by interior designer Erinn Farrell, they landed on a custom paint color – Benjamin Moore’s Evening Blue – for the cabinetry, complemented by clear Alder in a natural stain. The retro, Mid-Mod Squares tile backsplash in custom colors from Mercury Mosaics gives a nod to the original style of the home built in the 1950's. The overall layout of the kitchen didn't change much, but the pantry and baking center on the refrigerator wall are new features that provide much needed storage. The main living area, however, did go through some major changes. The wall separating the kitchen and dining room came down, and the small doorway connecting the dining and living rooms was transformed into a larger arch. The original wood floors (found beneath not one, but two layers of linoleum) received a fresh stain. The homeowners also knocked down the wall that sectioned off the stairs and built a slatted wood partition themselves. It was originally going to be a reeded wall, but they added the boxes for extra support, giving it more character in the end. At Revival House we love a unique, bold project. However, the fact that these clients love the new kitchen and can’t believe they get to use it every day is the best compliment!

This is in a small living room right off the entry to a larger home. The clients wanted this space to set the tone for the home as one that is sophisticated and fun. They have an extensive vinyl LP collection and wanted to be able to enjoy some of their favorite album covers so we created a grid of carefully chosen albums to be the art in this room. Acting as a blank canvas, this compact Yaletown condo and its gutsy homeowners welcomed our kaleidoscopic creative vision and gave us free reign to funk up their otherwise drab pad. Colorless Ikea sofas and blank walls were traded for ultra luxe, Palm-Springs-inspired statement pieces. Wallpaper, painted pattern and foil treatments were used to give each of the tight spaces more 'larger-than-life' personality. In a city surrounded yearly with grey, rain-filled clouds and towers of glass, the overarching goal for the home was building upon a foundation of fun! In curating the home's collection of eccentric art and accessories, nothing was off limits. Each piece was handpicked from up-and-coming artists' online shops, local boutiques and galleries. The custom velvet, feather-filled sectional and its many pillows was used to make the space as much for lounging as it is for looking. Since completion, the globe-trotting duo have continued to add to their newly designed abode - both true converts to the notion that sometimes more is definitely more.

These Northern Virginia residents have owned this vacation home for about ten years. With retirement imminent, they decided to give the entire home an over-haul. With it’s great bones and amazing location, this seemed like a very sound investment for their future. Paola McDonald from Olamar Interiors had been working with the clients for the past three years, helping them to renovate their Sterling, VA condominium and their Moorefield, WV weekend home. It seemed fitting that they would also hire her to help them renovate this home as well. For this project we took the home down to the studs and practically rebuilt it. The renovation includes an addition to the basement level and main floor to create a new fitness room, additional guest bedroom and larger kitchen and dining area. It also included a renovation of the facade of the home. The exterior of the home was completely re-sided and painted, and we added the tall windows at the stairs. The lower entry deck was expanded and an upper deck was added just off the kitchen in order for the homeowner to keep his grill away from the strong ocean winds. A new deck was also added off of the master bedroom. New stainless steel railings were added to all the decks. We opened the homes stairwells, adding custom glass railings and new lighting to create a much more open feel and allow for natural light to flood the entire main living area. The original, tiny kitchen was expanded substantially, adding a large custom eat in bar, wine storage area and plenty of storage. We utilized Decora’s Marquis Cabinetry in an espresso finish to give the kitchen a very clean, contemporary feel. Carrara marble countertops paired with a grey quartz, single slap marble backsplash, and stainless appliances create a clean look. In the new dining area, a simple Modloft dining table was paired with a Regina Andrew bubbles chandelier and Jessica Charles dining chairs for a sophisticated feel accentuated perfectly by beachy colors and textures that tie in the beautiful views of the Ocean. A custom chandelier from John Pomp is the highlight of the family room, particularly at night when it is reminiscent to fireflies in the sky. A new custom designed, custom made sectional, cozy newly added Spark Modern Fires gas fireplace, custom rug by Julie Dasher and Lee Industries chairs create a cozy place to lounge and watch television after a long day at the beach. Guests feel like they are in a luxurious boutique hotel complete with spectacular views, comfortable Ann Gish linens and beautiful and unique lighting fixtures. All three full baths and the powder room received complete facelifts with new glass, marble and ceramic tiles, Decora cabinetry, new lighting fixtures, quartz countertops and unique features that make unique statements in each one. Phillip Jeffries mica wallpaper are used in the entryway and family room fireplace walls to add a sandy texture to each space. Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was added to the master bedroom accent wall to create a delicate feature. New flooring throughout includes gorgeous dark stained hardwood floors, ceramic tile and Karastan carpeting in the bedrooms. The crisp white and grey walls are accentuated throughout the home by beach inspired turquoises, navies and lime greens. Designed for a rural property in Madawaska Valley, our clients requested a sleek, low-maintenance exterior that reflects the rural surroundings, which include a pine forest behind the house and a scenic duck pond. To honour these natural elements, the design incorporates wood timber and lattice accents, creating a balance of modern and organic materials. The layout is crafted with the family’s dynamic lifestyle in mind, offering ample spaces for both active living and quiet moments. The home features a spacious open-concept living room, dining room, and kitchen with high ceilings and large windows, designed to promote family gatherings and entertaining. The new kitchen, equipped with an island and stool seating, flows effortlessly into the great room, which includes a fireplace with a concrete slab surround and a timber mantel, tying together modern and natural design elements. The home expansion includes a larger master ensuite, an additional bedroom, and a new study for a quiet space. Practical additions such as a powder room, mudroom, large pantry, and a modern kitchen further enhance the home’s functionality. A large screened porch off the dining room and kitchen offers an extended area for entertaining guests, while a wrap-around deck with a covered section provides protection from the summer sun. Jens Juul Eilersen has created a gigantic "sofa bathtub", which is an orgy of soft foam, down and pillows. Tub is the coolest and softest sofa yet in the Eilersen universe of floaters. And the contrast between the slim, tight outer shell and the interior heaven of foam and down creates dynamism in the language of form. Like sitting on a soft bed. "My goal was to create a well-being sofa where you can sit as if on a soft bed. And I succeeded! I actually fell asleep the first time I leaned back into the prototype, which was the deepest version," tells Jens Juul Eilersen. "When I woke up, I could certainly see that I had to develop a variation of the model in which people could stay awake". This resulted in a further 2 different depths where you sit more upright but still comfortably. Compared to Eilersen's other floater, Tub differentiates itself by the frame. Tub does not have a heavy frame, which is part of the comfort. But on the other hand a thin shell, which keeps the large, soft pillows in place. Externally, the lines are straight and tight and internally, the upholstery and pillows result in organic lines. "The entire sitting comfort in Tub lies in the foam, which seems softer due to the large depth. This provides a feeling of elevation and larger submersion than in any of our other sofas. It is actually just like sitting in a large mug of foaming beer or on a cloud of down" says Jens Juul Eilersen who promises that even though Tub is soft, inviting and provoking, it cannot become flat. This fun & quirky space was just waiting for a Tweak! The home was built in 1939 so naturally it poses some challenges in regards to laying out furniture. The front door sits smack dab in the middle of the room, dividing the space in two. This family of five needed a larger living room and couldn't figure out how to balance the space. We created lines for the eye to follow that would open this home up and really showcase the amazing African artifacts hidden throughout. The husband is an avid collector of Sub-Saharan art and we used his passion as inspiration for the decor. A historic home and ancient artifacts? We needed to throw in a modern twist to get this home up-to-date. We incorporated pops of color and fun, bold prints to bring out the home's wild side. A houndstooth rug and new display case did just the trick. The wife prefers midcentury modern decor so we incorporated a fun lamp and these awesome lounge chairs from Houzz to incorporate her style into the space.

This three bedroom duplex apartment is uniquely located at the corner of Gramercy Park. The project involved the renovation of one apartment and expansion into the unit above. The one bedroom apartment upstairs was converted into a Master Suite, while the original Master Bedroom was absorbed into the living room, creating a larger entertainment space to accommodate a piano and a custom bar with a cantilevered counter. A new staircase connecting the existing apartment with the Master Suite is tucked away to maximize open social area. The dark wood floors were continued through the stair to suggest that this had always been part of the original design. Upstairs, the new Master Bedroom faces south overlooking the park with integrated millwork on either side of the fireplace. A built-in bed floats off the floor and adjacent wall. Her closet used space flanking the fireplace for built-in shoe storage, providing a functional yet colorful display when lit. Cove lighting, stretched fabric and frosted glass were employed to provide a warm glow for the spaces when not illuminated by the abundant daylight on both levels. These Northern Virginia residents have owned this vacation home for about ten years. With retirement imminent, they decided to give the entire home an over-haul. With it’s great bones and amazing location, this seemed like a very sound investment for their future. Paola McDonald from Olamar Interiors had been working with the clients for the past three years, helping them to renovate their Sterling, VA condominium and their Moorefield, WV weekend home. It seemed fitting that they would also hire her to help them renovate this home as well. For this project we took the home down to the studs and practically rebuilt it. The renovation includes an addition to the basement level and main floor to create a new fitness room, additional guest bedroom and larger kitchen and dining area. It also included a renovation of the facade of the home. The exterior of the home was completely re-sided and painted, and we added the tall windows at the stairs. The lower entry deck was expanded and an upper deck was added just off the kitchen in order for the homeowner to keep his grill away from the strong ocean winds. A new deck was also added off of the master bedroom. New stainless steel railings were added to all the decks. We opened the homes stairwells, adding custom glass railings and new lighting to create a much more open feel and allow for natural light to flood the entire main living area. The original, tiny kitchen was expanded substantially, adding a large custom eat in bar, wine storage area and plenty of storage. We utilized Decora’s Marquis Cabinetry in an espresso finish to give the kitchen a very clean, contemporary feel. Carrara marble countertops paired with a grey quartz, single slap marble backsplash, and stainless appliances create a clean look. In the new dining area, a simple Modloft dining table was paired with a Regina Andrew bubbles chandelier and Jessica Charles dining chairs for a sophisticated feel accentuated perfectly by beachy colors and textures that tie in the beautiful views of the Ocean. A custom chandelier from John Pomp is the highlight of the family room, particularly at night when it is reminiscent to fireflies in the sky. A new custom designed, custom made sectional, cozy newly added Spark Modern Fires gas fireplace, custom rug by Julie Dasher and Lee Industries chairs create a cozy place to lounge and watch television after a long day at the beach. Guests feel like they are in a luxurious boutique hotel complete with spectacular views, comfortable Ann Gish linens and beautiful and unique lighting fixtures. All three full baths and the powder room received complete facelifts with new glass, marble and ceramic tiles, Decora cabinetry, new lighting fixtures, quartz countertops and unique features that make unique statements in each one. Phillip Jeffries mica wallpaper are used in the entryway and family room fireplace walls to add a sandy texture to each space. Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was added to the master bedroom accent wall to create a delicate feature. New flooring throughout includes gorgeous dark stained hardwood floors, ceramic tile and Karastan carpeting in the bedrooms. The crisp white and grey walls are accentuated throughout the home by beach inspired turquoises, navies and lime greens.
