Jolynn Johnson, owner of CK+B, gained 2 hours to her day by moving 3 blocks from the showroom. A 1961 rambler was gutted and remodeled to accommodate a simpler lifestyle and 55 plus living. Every room changed location as she designed this home to fit her needs now and in the future The living room did stay in the same location, however 18” were taken from a bedroom to add the Fireplace/ Entertainment center. It started with the 4’ horizontal gas fireplace and a niche above for the TV. The tile surround is both wood stone white marble above the hearth and chocolate marble on the hearth and below. Walnut cabinets flank both sides of the fireplace for storage of media equipment and floating shelves above The bookcases in this room needed to be the same size as the bookcase in my previous home. I love decorating for Christmas and I have hundreds of Santa’s and a large village. My husband made styrofoam scenes for each shelf, which made setting up the houses and lighting so much easier. I wanted to replicate the bookshelves so he didn’t need to remake the entire scene, but again I didn’t want the same look-more contemporary. The design ended up with floating shelves of walnut wood. Each shelf has its own outlet and puck light to a switch (a lesson learned about how to get everything plugged in without cords between the shelves.) Below with cabinets for storage.

In this kitchen, we wanted to tie in the classic black and white palette to the homes character. To do so, the home's original molding details were recreated throughout crown molding and doorways. We incorporated brushed brass and matte black hardware, as well as sand-in-place oak flooring. Our client wanted to continue her tradition of giving her grandchildren weekly gourmet cooking and baking lessons. A paneled refrigerator was designed into the back nook of the kitchen, opening up treasured countertop space for cooking, prepping, and gourmet baked-good preparation. The lowered countertop area create an ideal baking station. To make use of the countertop space, we installed a large 3' galley workstation with dry dock. An elegant gloss black and brass range ties into the classic charm of this 1910's bungalow. The adjacent dining nook is the perfect place for morning coffee and a fresh baked croissant.

The approach to Edge House, a walk through verdant woodland abundant with ferns and moss, is a lesson in arrival. What appears is a woodsy yet contemporary dwelling divided into two volumes, framing an ocean view. Located on an island off Midcoast, Maine, Edge House is a low-slung cabin that hugs the rocky coast. The client commissioned Charles Rose Architects to design a simple cottage retreat that could take full advantage of the view, while also remaining inconspicuously nestled in the trees. The solution was a simple wood-shingled structure that features large glass windows, connecting both structure and inhabitant to the site. From the water’s edge, only a few hundred meters away, the house is barely visible. The selection of contextual materials, specifically cedar shingles, was meant to embed the structure in the landscape. For the interior, bedrooms are purposefully small, and beds were positioned close to the full-height windows, allowing occupants to immerse themselves in the view. Clerestory windows under the roof further amplify the quality of natural light and create a weightless effect on the roof from the outside. The stone fireplace, located in the living room, was crafted with stones gathered from the site as another way to bring the outdoors in.

The primary bathroom is a lesson in warmth and simplicity: the wood tiles bring warmth and coziness to this bathing nook creates instant relaxation and a spa feeling.

This bright and inviting home office remodel is a lesson in how to blend functionality with comfort. French doors create an elegant entrance while allowing natural light to flow through the space. The Simple Pleasures project required macro shots of all the things I love. This emphasized the simplicity of each subject and how they effortlessly manifest gratification. Unique angles, clarity and details were among my main objectives. Ultimately, my goal was to convey this fundamental lesson of simple pleasures in a creative photographic message in hopes of illustrating the value of this explainable phenomenon. I chose items that most of us walk by most of the time without much thought. As a result, this project is a pictorial representation of some of the amazing inexpensive sources of joy in my world. Photography is one way for me to express the way I think, feel, and love. What I have captured with my camera last longer then the fleeting moments of bliss. All Weather teamed up with the Property Brothers and Emmy nominated actress and comedian Cheryl Hines on this week’s episode of HGTV’s hit show CELEBRTIY IOU. In the Cheryl Hines Gifts a Garage Makeover episode, Cheryl surprises Sarita, her close friend of nearly 20 years, by transforming her underused detached garage into a gorgeous multi purpose guest suite and work space. Sarita started as Cheryl’s assistant, turned into a close friend as well as a nanny for her daughter Catherine. “Sarita is a part of the family and Catherine wouldn’t be who she is today without her.” said Hines. “She taught Cat so much.” Cheryl Hines learned a very important lesson about demolition from the Property Brothers. you can’t scream because all the stuff flies into your mouth. Hines wields a reciprocating saw and sledgehammer and knocks down shelves in the episode. Let's just say that from conception to final this home took over a year. 7 months to design and 7 months to build. So basically the lesson learned: Is be patient, consider loads of extras and put in a lot of your own time. Was it worth it - YES and I would do it again.
