The owners of this property had a very specific look in mind for what was originally a remodel/addition project. On seeing the original concept sketches, however, they loved the design and decided to build a completely new house on the existing site. Situated with views of the landmark Camelback Mountain, this Territorial is wholly appropriate to its context. Clean modern lines, deep set windows, and a significant use of stone and exposed wood sets the tone for this southwestern home. Massing and the juxtaposition of strong vertical with horizontal detail elements create drama while remaining true to the aesthetic. Custom-cut wood outriggers define the roofline, adding drama and contrast to the exterior elevations. Privacy being a key component of the scope, the design incorporates a large interior courtyard beyond the rustic entry doors and thick exterior walls. Using a double-framed wall method provided the look of heavy adobe walls without the cost. Inside, intricate yet rough-hewn wooded trusses are a focal point in the living and dining rooms, with the tongue and groove ceilings stained to match. The steel hardware was designed specifically for use in this home.

Our design for the expansion and gut renovation of a small 1200 square foot house in a residential neighborhood triples is size, and reworks the living arrangement. The rear addition takes advantage of southern exposure with a "greenhouse" room that provides solar heat gain in winter, shading in summer, and a vast connection to the rear yard. Architecturally, we used an approach we call "willful practicality." The new soaring ceiling ties together first and second floors in a dramatic volumetric expansion of space, while providing increased ventilation and daylighting from greenhouse to operable windows and skylights at the peak. Exterior pockets of space are created from curved forces pushing in from outside to form cedar clad porch and stoop. Sustainable design is employed throughout all materials, energy systems and insulation. Masonry exterior walls and concrete floors provide thermal mass for the interior by insulating the exterior. An ERV system facilitates increased air changes and minimizes changes to the interior air temperature. Energy and water saving features and renewable, non-toxic materal selections are important aspects of the house design. Environmental community issues are addressed with a drywell in the side yard to mitigate rain runoff into the town sewer system. The long sloping south facing roof is in anticipation of future solar panels, with the standing seam metal roof providing anchoring opportunities for the panels. The exterior walls are clad in stucco, cedar, and cement-fiber panels defining different areas of the house. Closed cell spray insulation is applied to exterior walls and roof, giving the house an "air-tight" seal against air infiltration and a high R-value. The ERV system provides the ventilation needed with this tight envelope. This great room was designed so everyone can be together for both day-to-day living and when entertaining. This custom home was designed and built by Meadowlark Design+Build in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Photography by Joshua Caldwell.

This light fixture features a design of cream-colored clay beads, with additional color options available. The beads are crafted using the stoneware method, which involves hand-rolling each bead, firing them at high temperatures, and then meticulously arranging them onto brushed stainless steel frames. A diverse range of bead sizes, up to seven different dimensions, are utilized to create the elegant draping effect. The alternative design employs the earthenware method (not seen here) where the beads are similarly hand-rolled but fired at lower temperatures compared to stoneware. This method allows for a broader spectrum of color choices. The earthenware variant also incorporates beads of varying sizes and shapes. For both designs, the same color chart is applicable for color selection.

The major objective of this home was to craft something entirely unique; based on our client’s international travels, and tailored to their ideal lifestyle. Every detail, selection and method was individual to this project. The design included personal touches like a dog shower for their Great Dane, a bar downstairs to entertain, and a TV tucked away in the den instead of on display in the living room. Great design doesn’t just happen. It’s a product of work, thought and exploration. For our clients, they looked to hotels they love in New York and Croatia, Danish design, and buildings that are architecturally artistic and ideal for displaying art. Our part was to take these ideas and actually build them. Every door knob, hinge, material, color, etc. was meticulously researched and crafted. Most of the selections are custom built either by us, or by hired craftsman.

This master suite color palette invites calm. Accentuated by a soft blue an beige floral linen wallcovering, and warm beige grass cloth walls, the room evokes a call to nature. A custom boucle area rug brings a soft texture underfoot to welcome an early riser or anyone who choses to relax on the loveseat and read.

Love the details in our clients, this was a built-in bench designed to make space for the first floor dining area's vaulted ceiling but ended up being a perfect place for the clients' cats to spend their days. From the onset of this custom home design on Canandaigua Lake, our clients knew their desire to be integrated with the lake and its views from as many rooms as possible. Their taste in the classic interior finishes of clean and crisp whites compliment the views we framed throughout. What the photos don’t show is the process of planning this home from razing and rebuilding an existing structure to the extensive planning board meetings for the proposed design goals. This neighborhood has strict zoning laws that make designing a clients wishes and dreams a challenge. We worked intimately with the client and town zoning boards to gain necessary approvals for this custom lake home design. As a result we were able to achieve their desired goals for the design of this house and the development of this property.
