A tall cedar fence offers privacy for this small Toronto yard which backs onto the boardwalk and beach of Lake Ontario. The unique elevated zero edge pool has a 2' x 23' tempered glass spill wall, with the flow collecting in a large underground reservoir. Wiarton ledgerock, coping and flagstone lend a bold solidity to the design, while a strip of river rock links the pool area to the small putting green and lawn. An 11' wide sheer descent waterfall on the end wall adds a final dramatic touch. (12 x 23, custom rectangular)

With eye-pleasing symmetry, this small pool and accompanying spa fit easily into a small backyard. A deck in tumbled pavers, with subtle colouration, frames the pool to create an inviting retreat. The pool interior is finished in white Armorcoat with green slate tile edging and decoration on steps and spa seats. A corner privacy screen hides pool equipment and maintains the tranquil mood. This young Toronto family wanted to maximize use of a very small severely sloping yard, so they created a series of decks on multiple levels. Custom cedar fencing along the sides provides privacy, while the protective wall of tempered glass along the front allows a full view of the "plunge" pool. The modern look is extended with a deck of acid-etched architectural concrete and an elevated 8' wide sheer descent waterfall adds a final touch of drama. The 11’ x 23’ dry Gunite pool’s dark grey Armourcoat interior contrasts beautifully with the deck of Wiarton flagstone set on concrete. Across the deep end a series of flagstone slabs are separated by strips of ground cover to help the runoff water the shrubs. The entire backyard is essentially low maintenance.

The owners of this classic century home wanted to install a pool for cooling dips, a hot tub to extend the season plus have enough patio space for lounging. To make room in their small backyard they had to remove an existing large raised concrete terrace with integral ledgerock walls.

The simple clean lines of the design give the whole backyard a feeling of elegance, while the four concrete pillars clad in Wiarton ledgerock complete the classic look. The underwater bench in the notch beside the steps creates a refreshing in-pool conversation corner.

Since the structure has an English theme, I set the pattern of the wall boards in the same way as a skilled stone mason would build a proper English stacked stone wall. The sights and sounds of this aquatic sanctuary prove that size doesn't matter. Working to preserve the homeowner's existing garden, this small pool was incorporated into a compact yard for big impact. Reminiscent of an informal English garden, the poolscape features the tranquil sounds of a bubbler rock waterfall. Rough-edged tumbled pavers decking and coping complete the natural look. It took the entire season to complete the backyard of this new home in Ancaster. Not from production delays, but rather the owner’s unrelenting commitment to perfection. He wanted to ensure every single element brought functional practicality to his carefully planned vision of backyard luxury leisure living.

Without the space for a large pool a compact 16’ x 28’ vinyl liner pool was designed with two purposes. In summer it can be used as a refreshing plunge pool, while in spring and fall it can be heated to hot spring temperature and significantly extend the pool season. A two-foot perimeter path of low maintenance river rock ensures proper drainage between the retaining wall and fence.

The large pool deck in premium acid washed concrete has the look of limestone. Extra thick natural limestone bullnose coping suits the large pool. Classic diagonal grass inserts utilize artificial turf to ensure a continuous manicured look. (19 x 49, custom rectangular)

The massive undulating lot gives a spacious open feeling to the yard, while the focal point is a 16’ x 36’ vinyl liner pool surrounded by a spacious deck in architectural stamped concrete. The contrasting black Wiarton flagstone coping helps to define the simple clean lines of the design.
