Referred to inside H&H as “the basement of dreams,” this project transformed a raw, dark, unfinished basement into a bright living space flooded with daylight. Working with architect Sean Barnett of Polymath Studio, Hammer & Hand added several 4’ windows to the perimeter of the basement, a new entrance, and wired the unit for future ADU conversion. This basement is filled with custom touches reflecting the young family’s project goals. H&H milled custom trim to match the existing home’s trim, making the basement feel original to the historic house. The H&H shop crafted a barn door with an inlaid chalkboard for their toddler to draw on, while the rest of the H&H team designed a custom closet with movable hanging racks to store and dry their camping gear. The transformation of this space went beyond aesthetics (e.g. tile selection and finishes) and is an example of how careful planning and attention to detail can result in achieving maximum potential and functionality in a small space. Highlights of functional changes include: -Expanded bathroom size - moved wall 10" taking space from the closet in next bedroom; -Moved toilet and plumbing; -Replaced original octagon shaped window to rectangular window, which offered the desired symmetry from front of the home; -Designed a fixed window that would offer privacy while showcasing the character of the 1920s home; -Installed waterproof, flat floor; -Designed custom linen cabinet and vanity to maximize storage and function; most bathrooms twice the size don’t have the storage of this one; -Added insulation to the two exterior walls and sound insulation to interior wall facing bedroom; -Added fan (there wasn’t one); -Moved the location (and swing) of the door over several inches; -Used wall hung faucet to maximize the limited space while supporting the desired modern vision of the space.

This project began with the request to update the existing kitchen of this eclectic waterfront home on Puget Sound. The remodel entailed relocating the kitchen from the front of the house where it was limiting the window space to the back of the house overlooking the family room and dining room. We opened up the kitchen with sliding window walls to create a natural connection to the exterior. The bold colors were the owner’s vision, and they wanted the space to be fun and inviting. From the reclaimed barn wood floors to the recycled glass countertops to the Teppanyaki grill on the island and the custom stainless steel cloud hood suspended from the barrel vault ceiling, virtually everything was centered on entertaining.

For this vacation home, a complete gut job was needed in order to fit the lifestyle and needs of this young family of four and their guests. The narrow floor plan created unique challenges, but we maximized its full potential. The result was a warm but modern design with plenty of storage and seating. One of the biggest challenges was making sure everyone had a place to sit in the kitchen. The space between the kitchen and staircase was limiting, but with sleek modern chairs that tuck away, we were able to allow for traffic patterns and seat all of the children. To accommodate any vacation extras, an extra wide space near the kitchen and bathroom was transformed into additional shelving. We installed floor-to-ceiling cabinets that offer plenty of space for everyone’s belongings. A clean design was a must, so we opted for a more modern look. We used Benjamin Moore's "Simply White" as the foundation, putting it on the walls and cabinets, and coordinating the countertops and backsplash. To make the home more welcoming, we used natural wood on the island and floating shelves. The wood was coordinated with the floor, creating a cohesive interior.
