This growing family of six was struggling with a dysfunctional kitchen design. The center island had been installed at an odd angle that limited accessibility and traffic flow. Additionally, storage space was limited by poor cabinet design. Finally, doorways in and out of the kitchen were narrow and poorly located, especially for children dashing in and out. Other design challenges included how to better use a 10’ x 12’ room for children’s jackets and toys and how to add a professional-quality gas range in a neighborhood were natural gas wasn’t available. The new design would address all of these issues. DESIGN SOLUTIONS The new kitchen design revolves around a more proportional island. Carefully placed in the center of the new space with seating for four, it includes a prep sink, a second dishwasher and a beverage center. The distressed ebony-stained island and hutch provides a brilliant contrast between the white color cabinetry. White Carrera marble countertops and backsplash top both island and perimeter cabinets. Tall, double stacked cabinetry lines two walls to maximize storage space. Across the room there was an unused wall that now contains a 36” tower fridge and freezer, both covered with matching panels, and a tall cabinet that contains a microwave, steam unit and warming drawer. A propane tank was buried in the back yard to provide gas to a new 60” professional range and cooktop. A custom-made wood mantel hood blends perfectly with the cabinet style. The old laundry room was reconfigured to have lots of locker space for all kids and added cabinetry for storage. A double entry door separated the new mudroom from the rest of the back hall. In the back hall the back windows were replaced with a set of French door and added decking to create a direct access to deck and backyard. The end result is an open floor plan, high-end appliances, great traffic flow and pleasing colors. The homeowner calls it the “kitchen of her dreams.”

This dark, dreary kitchen was large, but not being used well. The family of 7 had outgrown the limited storage and experienced traffic bottlenecks when in the kitchen together. A bright, cheerful and more functional kitchen was desired, as well as a new pantry space. We gutted the kitchen and closed off the landing through the door to the garage to create a new pantry. A frosted glass pocket door eliminates door swing issues. In the pantry, a small access door opens to the garage so groceries can be loaded easily. Grey wood-look tile was laid everywhere. We replaced the small window and added a 6’x4’ window, instantly adding tons of natural light. A modern motorized sheer roller shade helps control early morning glare. Three free-floating shelves are to the right of the window for favorite décor and collectables. White, ceiling-height cabinets surround the room. The full-overlay doors keep the look seamless. Double dishwashers, double ovens and a double refrigerator are essentials for this busy, large family. An induction cooktop was chosen for energy efficiency, child safety, and reliability in cooking. An appliance garage and a mixer lift house the much-used small appliances. An ice maker and beverage center were added to the side wall cabinet bank. The microwave and TV are hidden but have easy access. The inspiration for the room was an exclusive glass mosaic tile. The large island is a glossy classic blue. White quartz countertops feature small flecks of silver. Plus, the stainless metal accent was even added to the toe kick! Upper cabinet, under-cabinet and pendant ambient lighting, all on dimmers, was added and every light (even ceiling lights) is LED for energy efficiency. White-on-white modern counter stools are easy to clean. Plus, throughout the room, strategically placed USB outlets give tidy charging options.

Access to the pool area is convenient being either from the front or rear of the house, or via the basement walkout. To maximize the time available for recreation and relaxation, a major focus has been placed on low maintenance. Dense plantings of easy care greenery help to add texture and soften the hardscapes.

This custom built beach house posed many challenged including the specific design criteria, space requirements, and limited wall space as 75% of the walls are glass. The AV closet was built into the stair spandrel, space that would have otherwise been unused. Certain walls were thickened allowing recessed TVs to sit perfectly flush with the wall. The automated buttons throughout the house control functions such as Welcome, Goodnight, & Party Mode. The home automation was designed for anyone to be able to walk into the house and use the system.

This master bathroom remodel features a pull-out hamper that is built into the cabinetry for easy access to store dirty clothes and away from the bedroom.

The goals included a Victorian Period look and universal design features. Wider isles for wheelchair mobility was incorporated. The farm sink is pulled forward for access. the touch less faucet and anti-microbial copper sink are never a bad idea. Other interesting features include armoire doors on the oven and refrigerator and freezer doors provide access. The “Scullery Area” features flush inset doors by Woodharbor painted Morel, and features Soapstone counters with integrated drain board, custom copper undermount sink. Walnut shelves by Woodharbor for Clawson Cabinets, Antique Brackets and hardware— “customer find”. Brass rail and s hooks by deVOL. and a microwave drawer. All details that provide access at the lower level for both children and people with reach limitations.

This Woodways kitchen is inspired by the styles of the 1950s and 1960s without slipping entirely back in time. Adding roll out drawers allow full access to every inch of space within the cabinets. With limited wall space, these are an important storage and organization element.

We opened up this small kitchen by removing the dividing wall between it and the breakfast room. However we did not want to cover up the original wood floor inlays, which limited our footprint. This triple bank of windows replaced two windows of different heights and positions. Under the overhang of the peninsula, on the far left, is access to a cabinet.

Our Customer wanted to update their existing bathroom with some fresh, modern finishes. They asked us to replace their tub with a walk-in shower to create easier access for an aging owner. They were also interested in having low-maintenance materials, so we suggested an Onyx Collection shower base and surround. We were able to find a vanity to fit their limited space at a local retailer. All around, a great update.

The outdoor entertaining areas are easily accessible from both the living room and kitchen walkouts. The new stone-clad barbecue station with spacious black granite countertop is conveniently located beside the outdoor dining table. As the light begins to fall the downlights from the pergola bathe the dining area in a soft glow.

Niomi has limitations reaching high, so we added this pull-down shelf. It effectively adds one more shelf of accessible wall storage.
