CA fam ?—ever heard of the “10 Biggest Renovation Regrets”? #7 is a total trap that’s wrecked 90% of folks I know. My bestie just texted crying: her new kitchen walls are moldy, floors are buckling, and she’s out $30K fixing it.
Let’s be real: stop believing “CA is too dry for moisture control”. Especially if you’re in SF (fog city) or LA (rainy Nov-Mar)—painting walls with regular paint is basically rolling out a red carpet for mold. My neighbor’s walls last year? Peeling like a bad sunburn, and her oven grew mold (gross, I know).
Here’s the fix:
❶ Walls: Moisture-blocking primer + anti-mold paint (Sherwin-Williams’ “MoldBlock” is CA mom-approved).
❷ Floors: Water-resistant composite wood (skip cheap solid wood—it swells when humidity hits).
❸ Wet areas (kitchen/bath): Mini dehumidifier (Amazon “CA dehumidifier” under $100 saves your walls!).
No one wants renovation regrets, but dodging this? Saves you 30% in repair cash. Let’s enjoy CA sun and fog—without mold crashing the party. ?️

The couple wanted a kitchen remodel and a fireplace added to the family room. The 8-foot extension on the house expanded the living space and led to a more expansive feel to the gorgeous kitchen and family room.
Kitchen
The new 13-foot island with Aura Quartz countertop allows the family to sit and chat while making meals and provides seating for casual meals and snacks. And with so much added counter space, the island is perfect for entertaining.
Wellborn Premier cabinets in Glacier finish provide plenty of storage space, including under the island. The island also features these cabinets, with a custom color match.
Most of the kitchen’s appliances are stainless steel. Stainless steel appliances last longer, making them an investment and are easier to keep clean.
The 36” range top has six burners and its red knobs add a pop of color to the stretch of white counter fronts and tops. The backsplash behind the range is Barossa Valley Arabesque tile. The rest of the backsplash along the counter is white subway tile, giving the area a simple but clean look. The GE Café double electric convection ovens make cooking large holiday meals a breeze.
The French door GE Café refrigerator has a full-width electronic temp-controlled drawer. A dual zone wine refrigerator has glass with stainless steel frame.
Although the homeowners could have had a stainless steel dishwasher, they opted instead to install an Asko. The dishwasher’s front panel blends so seamlessly into the kitchen’s décor, it’s hiding it in plain sight while it works.
The butler pantry has a suede finish that breaks up the space with LG Minuet countertop.
Family Room Update
The family room was updated with the addition of a fireplace. A 42” Heatilator icon fireplace with herringbone refractory, black Grand Vista mesh cabinet doors and an 18.5-foot flue pipe was installed. RH Peterson 24″ split oak vented gas logs can be seen here.
The fireplace hearth is cultured stone from Eagle Stone & Brick, a St. Louis company. The style is Country Ledgestone Echo Ridge. The barnwood mantel of reclaimed timber is Montecito’s Irish Castle.

Our open-concept living space transformation highlights the home's transition from desert style to contemporary. The integration of modern finishes and thoughtful design details has brought the entire area to a new standard of beauty and comfort.

I asked her to choose some books that incorporate her personality and style, along with the message she'd like to create and express in this social area.
Her covers are Tarot, Unforgettable Journeys and Spectacle. I think her guests will enjoy a cocktail here with her while chatting with her about some of her favorite hobbies. ;)

Give your space a sense of antiquity with reclaimed mango wood that has been fully integrated into a unique console table. This rustic piece provides ample surface area for chatting with guests while also holding extra storage space. Books, coasters, magazines and blankets can fit inside two drawers or behind sliding barn doors that are accessible from either side. Wood is treated with a seven-step process for a rich texture that is enhanced with elegant cast iron industrial touches.

The Living room is where the friends hang out, chat, watch movies and read. The patterned drapes frame the window and Joanie (the cat) loves to curl up here. The TV sits anchored on a wall that has the map of Rome as its wallpaper. Bokshelves under have treasures for the friends. And the layout of the room enables tea, conversations and lounging. Blue plays an accent here with the sofa and the blue dot on the grid rug. The Green chandelier ties the lounge with the rest of the house which has more of a green colorway.
