The quest for the perfect dog friendly landscape took a fun turn this year with canine clients Rey and Finn. The Havanese siblings insisted on a large patio with room for snoozing and snacking, healthy turf for sniffing and rolling, and a dedicated area for when Mother Nature calls. The homeowners wanted a large outdoor room for relaxing and entertaining and to ensure there were no toxic plants, as we all know how much puppies will eat just about anything.
Mel & Doug worked with landscape contractor Grant Smith to design the patio and the stream bed at the bottom of the yard while I designed the planting plan and contributed design expertise to the retaining walls, patio and stream bed design. In a true collaboration we transformed a boring backyard into an inviting oasis for dog and human alike.

When asked for a comment, Rey simply said, "Woof."

Birds love gently moving water. Just provide a place for them to land, such as rock platforms, or design a shallow end as part of the feature. And by keeping the water circulating, this will also help prevent mosquito larvae from hatching.

Living rooms should be the center of a home and this one is no different. Light streams in through large windows, illuminating the open space. Rich wood tones of the trim and staircase give a cozy contrast to the white walls.

The waterfall feeds into a re-circulating pond at the edge of irregular flagstone placed in the soil to add to the natural feel of the space. Natural boulders in the background not only help to shape the stream but also retain soil behind them.

California Waterscapes worked together with Pacific Outdoor Living (pool contractor) to create a design that incorporated the pool shape with our Fire Pit. This stunning seating area is perfect for entertaining year round!

Deck Jets are a great water feature can be cast into concrete decks or integrated into surrounding landscapes.
Deck Jets provide a graceful arc of water that enters the pool with a gentle splash. The stream seems to appear magically from the pool deck since the jet installs flush and out of sight.

This beautiful water feature has been emptied for fall but even still is a stunning addition to this backyard. The karl foerster grasses really stand out in fall when the summer colours start to fade.

Our vision was to take advantage of the steep property grade to create a beautiful slope with five cascading waterfalls, moss rock boulders, evergreens, perennials and annuals, plus a series of stairs and landings to bring them down to a new lower pool area.

Natural light streams in everywhere through abundant glass, giving a 270 degree view of the lake. Reflecting straight angles of mahogany wood broken by zinc waves, this home blends efficiency with artistry.

A new porch highlights the front door, once difficult to find, on this variation of a traditional Cape Cod home. Ample windows on axis with the living room entry focus a visitor’s attention on a sun filled garden terrace and water feature. From above, light streams through a ridge clerestory, inspired by the client’s love of the Stanford University Barn’s similar roof detail. The newly raised ceiling creates a lofty, inviting space. Below the living room, a new basement home theater is finished with fine wood paneling and accented with art from their collection.

The large windows in this living room let in a stream of natural light that makes the furniture shine even more. The texture and wash of the Springfield chairs balances the clean, fresh Hailey sectional.

You want your home aesthetic to fit who you are in the life you live. "To enlarge the sense of the backyard, and provide another graceful focal point, I created this natural-feeling waterfall my clients can enjoy from their living room and kitchen windows, too. For the ideal sounds to soothe every mood, they can adjust the water flow, from calming stream to rushing river. Ask me how I can create this effect for you."
