After completing an interior remodel for this mid-century home in the South Salem hills, we revived the old, rundown backyard and transformed it into an outdoor living room that reflects the openness of the new interior living space. We tied the outside and inside together to create a cohesive connection between the two. The yard was spread out with multiple elevations and tiers, throughout which we used to create “outdoor rooms” with separate seating, eating and gardening areas that flowed seamlessly from one to another. We installed a fire pit in the seating area, built-in pizza oven, wok and bar-b-que in the outdoor kitchen, and a soaking tub on the lower deck. The concrete dining table doubled as a ping pong table and required a boom truck to lift the pieces over the house and into the back yard. The result is an outdoor sanctuary the homeowners can effortlessly enjoy year-round.

Taragano Design & Build completed this two story rear addition in San Francisco, California. On a narrow urban lot there is no direction to build but up and back, and the constraint that governs everything is the rear yard setback. The addition was held to the line, which fixed the footprint before any interior planning began. Every square foot inside came from stacking rather than spreading. That created the real problem, which is access. Adding upstairs living space on a lot this size means the upper floor has no way out to the yard, and in a city where outdoor space is scarce, an upper floor that cannot reach the ground wastes the yard it sits above. The exterior stair answers that. It runs down the property line where it takes nothing from the usable patio, and it gives the upper floor its own direct route out. The deck was kept deliberately small. A larger platform would have shaded the patio below and turned the ground level into a covered service area rather than a place anyone would sit. Holding it to a landing keeps daylight on the concrete for most of the day, which is what makes the lower level the primary outdoor room. The two levels then read as one exterior. Continuous siding and matching trim across old and new means the addition does not announce itself as an addition, which on a rear elevation this visible from neighboring properties matters more than it would on a detached lot. Client uses his lower level townhouse patio with arbor for an "outdoor room". He asked us to light his arbor which is the central focus of the patio. Rather then "light up" the columns, we chose to down, light the interior of each column. In the center is a table with an elaborate flower display. We place a down, light using a 60 degree beam spread to focus 360 degrees of light onto the arrangement. The client was impressed.

The existing landscape of this Queen Anne backyard contained a series of cramped, disconnected spaces on multiple levels with little space to spread out or entertain. We designed a new deck that allows a smooth flow from the adjacent kitchen to this generous and flexible outdoor space. Built-in bench seating, centered around a gas firepit, maximizes space and incorporates storage while integrated planters define the space into distinct but connected outdoor rooms. A lower platform provides ample space for grilling and an integrated stair connects the deck to the adjacent garage. We took a small kitchen where the stove was centered on the main wall (which only left a small amount of space on each side for prep) and moved it to its own 'station', leaving an expansive 11 foot countertop for meal prep or laying out a spread, buffet style, for guests. Originally there was a single sink in the middle of this 8' long countertop. To fully utilize the space we added a second sink and moved them to the sides, In the center we added an upper cabinet for storage. This cabinet has shelves behind a seeded glass door. A pull out hamper is concealed in the lower left cabinet. Pivot mirrors can tilt and are lit with recessed lights. The lights are positioned so the beam spreads will overlap and fully light the mirror. The solid wood cabinets are painted Sherwin Williams Network Grey. The 12' x 12" ceramic tile floor looks like travertine stone and is set in a bond pattern.
