Selecting living room color schemes can be an easy and enjoyable process if you have fabulous inspiration and the right design tools. A beautiful color palette will instantly transform any drab and outdated living room into a trendy contemporary den found on the pages of your favorite designer magazines. The right shade can set the tone for the entire space, embodying whichever décor concept you desire. For this reason, when searching those isles for the perfect color scheme it is very important to choose wisely, understanding the particular look and style that each hue will evoke. For This young couple we went with a neutral pallet as they desired pops of colors with their furnishings, The wall paint color acted as a canvas, and the furniture, painting and accessories as there focal point.

What once was a great room lacking purpose and meaning is now a redefined environment fit for fun conversation and entertaining. With a blank canvas, a single piece of art was used to serve as the inspirational driver for this bar design. A wall bump-out was incorporated to anchor the entire bar within the massive great room. Symmetrical balance was formed by use of mirrored open shelves flanking the central piece of artwork. Layers of subtle wall textures from the mother of pearl wallcovering to the washed porcelain tile offer dimension. The rich wooden tones of the millwork highlight the touch of ornamentation and not only contrast against the translucent appearance of the natural quartzite counter but ground the overall design amongst the existing travertine floor. To further compliment the lustrous tones from the art piece, hints of brass and gold are seen in the pendants, bar stool bases and the metal detail intersecting the wall shelves. A deep sage accent wall is introduced to further accentuate the space and create a moodier vibe. Sophistication paired with intriguing elements breathe new life into this transformed great room space.

The homeowners of this condo sought our assistance when downsizing from a large family home on Howe Sound to a small urban condo in Lower Lonsdale, North Vancouver. They asked us to incorporate many of their precious antiques and art pieces into the new design. Our challenges here were twofold; first, how to deal with the unconventional curved floor plan with vast South facing windows that provide a 180 degree view of downtown Vancouver, and second, how to successfully merge an eclectic collection of antique pieces into a modern setting. We began by updating most of their artwork with new matting and framing. We created a gallery effect by grouping like artwork together and displaying larger pieces on the sections of wall between the windows, lighting them with black wall sconces for a graphic effect. We re-upholstered their antique seating with more contemporary fabrics choices - a gray flannel on their Victorian fainting couch and a fun orange chenille animal print on their Louis style chairs. We selected black as an accent colour for many of the accessories as well as the dining room wall to give the space a sophisticated modern edge. The new pieces that we added, including the sofa, coffee table and dining light fixture are mid century inspired, bridging the gap between old and new. The buyers of a 30-year-old townhome wanted a complete renovation to transition the property into contemporary open-space living. Walls and windows were removed, the sunken living room’s floor was raised, ceilings were opened up to soaring vaults and space from the large main bedroom was borrowed to make for a larger main bath suite. New ceiling geometry was designed to create an eye-pleasing attribute and a comprehensive lighting plan and fixtures were coordinated to feature each room’s focal points. Working with the homeowners’ tastes in mind, Karin selected a neutral color palette for wall colors, hardwood flooring, stone surfaces and carpeting. The kitchen layout design focused on workability and flow, with counter stools for quick bites and a bistro table and chairs for casual dining. A wet-bar was added across from a small parlor for reading and relaxing on sunny mornings. The living room’s focal point is a massive window-wall that opens to the stunning outdoors and deck, which was also raised to provide 100% single-floor living. The attractive fireplace features texture-patterned, multi-material tiles. The main bath suite features tandem sinks, a curb-less shower and a tasteful storage center for linens and personal items. All plumbing fixtures throughout the home are of a clean, contemporary design. Virtually all of the home’s furniture, rugs and accessories are new following comprehensive search and selection by Karin and the homeowners. This 11-month project successfully produced a very warm and inviting new home.
