The primary bathroom has been transformed into an open oasis, featuring a spacious, curbless walk-in shower that exudes luxury and openness. The bathroom floor and the shower floor are seamlessly connected with terrazzo tile, complemented by a 60" linear brass shower drain. The shower and bathroom walls showcase a striking 3-dimensional linear texture with Ribbonwood Walnut tiles. A large niche with custom shelving and beautifully finished edges in white quartz slab adds a touch of sophistication. A standout feature of the shower is the large picture window offering stunning views of the natural green surroundings, equipped with smart tinted glass that can switch between clear and fogged for privacy at the touch of a button. About a year after purchasing this structure, these clients engaged us to to start the process of designing and engineering a expansion of this little cottage into a larger home where they could put down roots and start a family. Our clients looked long and hard for the perfect outdoor setting and after months of searching, they found a little post-war cottage on a lake just east of Redmond, Washington. Our solution is a classic upper level addition that takes in the views of its alpine lake setting. The existing basement level was repurposed as the recreation hub of the house with a game area, media center, guest suite and storage for a large inventory of outdoor & boating gear. The main level was redesigned in a more family friendly format with a powder room, bedroom, vaulted great room, pantry and gourmet kitchen. The upper level is the private domain of the Master Suite and high tech hub. Because our clients work in the tech industry, a large home office that allows them to work remotely was an important component of their home's program. The master suite includes a large walk-in closet, small laundry, sleeping area and 5-piece master bath. The exterior of the house includes a covered porch that wraps around this level and leads to an expansive deck on the water side of the house. This deck functions as an extension of the main level and effectively adds several hundred square feet of additional living space. We then enveloped this building shell in a shingled craftsman style that is a hallmark of Seattle residential architecture.

When dealing with constraints such as small square footage and limited sunlight, it can be challenging to create dynamic lightning that penetrates and invites the user to a space. By adding a cool gray tone such as the brick veneer wall, it can immediately activate a room. With relief to the wall, it brings contrast to the existing white walls within the space, as well as making components such a white single hung window pop. This in turn, creates a significantly more dynamic and enriching space, transforming a place of once simple function to that of enjoyment and leisure.

Behold a space that exudes style and taste. The elegant striped marble tiling is easy on the eyes as it flows from the floor to the shower walls. The high quality shower components mingle with the colors of both the wall tiles and custom made vanity. Glass and recessed lighting help the vanity pop out from the rest of the space.

In this primary bath, Medallion Gold Wallace flat panel door style vanities were installed in Biscotti stained finish with MSI Calacatta Goa quartz countertop. The tile shower is Style Pure 12x24 tile for the flooring, shower walls and tub surround. Moroccan Concrete White 2” hex for shower floor and niche. General Kiel wall sconces. Moen Voss collection in chrome includes toilet paper holder, robe hooks, towel bars, deck mount faucet and shower head. Kohler Caxton undermount rectangular sinks in white. The closet is configured using StorX closet components.

The shower wall tile is Onyx Stone in Ice from Tesoro, and continues on the shower floor in a smaller 2x2 size. For the wall, 10x20 size tiles were laid in a straight grid pattern to add a transitional design element. For a decorative component, Dawn added a linear border ¾ up the shower walls in the Onyx Stone, Ice Mosaic. The shower features a large shower niche and a frameless glass hinge door for a clean, modern look.

Continuing the conversation of engaging the user in a relatively small/constrained space, a hierarchy of colors and materials can significantly impact a space. By using darker tones and textures on components such as floors and vanities and lighter colors such as whites on doors, windows and ceilings, a space can help guide the user, dissecting and ornamenting what is important. Thus, by designing with purpose, a greater level of sophistication is achieved.

The low budget, family house project posed a challenge of conveniently arranging multiple rooms in small area. Pre-reconstruction edges of the walls were toned down, in order to conform to the new, minimalistic aesthetics and letting two colors prevail in the interior was also the part of the concept. The white walls and the large mirrors make the space appear sizable. The wooden components of the interior bring an unifying ambience into play. The technical lighting illuminates the rooms without distracting the eye.
