Arched brick ceiling with a custom made light fixture. The owners found the parts for this light fixture over the island and had a local artist create this one of a kind fixture. The table with the seating is made from an old bowling alley lane. The pin placement marks can still be seen on the table top. The table is free standing so it can be moved off the island if desired. Down-to-studs remodel and second floor addition. The original house was a simple plain ranch house with a layout that didn’t function well for the family. We changed the house to a contemporary Mediterranean with an eclectic mix of details. Space was limited by City Planning requirements so an important aspect of the design was to optimize every bit of space, both inside and outside. The living space extends out to functional places in the back and front yards: a private shaded back yard and a sunny seating area in the front yard off the kitchen where neighbors can easily mingle with the family. A Japanese bath off the master bedroom upstairs overlooks a private roof deck which is screened from neighbors’ views by a trellis with plants growing from planter boxes and with lanterns hanging from a trellis above. What makes a bathroom accessible depends on the needs of the person using it, which is why we offer many custom options. In this case, a difficult to enter drop-in tub and a tiny separate shower stall were replaced with a walk-in shower complete with multiple grab bars, shower seat, and an adjustable hand shower. For every challenge, we found an elegant solution, like placing the shower controls within easy reach of the seat. Along with modern updates to the rest of the bathroom, we created an inviting space that's easy and enjoyable for everyone.
