A Kirkwood, MO couple needed to remodel their condo bathroom to be easily accessible for the husband in his power chair. The original bathroom had become an obstacle course and they needed a streamlined, efficient space. The new design moves all plumbing fixtures to one wall, which creates a large, open space to maneuver in. A wall-mounted sink works nicely whether standing or sitting. A standard toilet is outfitted with a bidet seat with remote control operation. The barrier-free, walk-in shower has two impressive accessibility features. The shower faucet panel incorporates a hand held shower, a rainfall head and 8 adjustable nozzles in one convenient, temperature-controlled package. In the opposite corner is a full body dryer with manual or timer control. Add two kinds of durable and easy to clean floor tile (the blue shower tile also appears on the sink backsplash!), serene grey onyx shower surround and wall paint, and they have a bathroom that makes a beautiful and productive difference in their lives. 2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY MERIT AWARD WINNER This couple lived in their colonial home in Burke, Virginia, for more than 20 years. Now that their children were grown and gone, it was time for them to pay more attention to their home. First on their list was to renovate their master bathroom. Tight and dysfunctional is how they described the existing space. The homeowners always dreamed of having a whirlpool, a large steam shower and a private toilet area. Importantly, they wanted to use the latest products and materials to bring the bathroom into the 21st Century. Starting with exotic granite and porcelain tile from floor to ceiling, the new design does just that. Then, a highly sophisticated steam shower using granite benches, a heavy glass enclosure, chrome faucets and a rain shower head was installed. Modern body spray heads are embedded in the wall tiles. The shower is complemented by a bubble, jetted whirlpool tub with granite surrounds. A modern double vanity with vessel sinks, a granite countertop, high end cabinets and stylish faucets rest along one wall. Custom-built, recessed mirrored medicine cabinets provide storage for necessities. In the end, the homeowners are thrilled with the outcome and never imagined that their old and dark looking small bath could ever be transformed into such beautiful bathroom.

When the owners tapped Anthony Wilder Design/Build to renovate the house, the firm’s interior designer Shannon Kadwell was tasked with improving the outmoded second-floor bath. The goal was to capitalize on the tree-level views while creating a luxurious spa retreat. The first step was to replace a row of waist-high windows with dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows. Kadwell centered a soaking tub and a glamorous chandelier by Moooi in front of the windows; mechanized shades provide privacy when needed. A glass-enclosed shower clad in Crema Marfil marble boasts a bench and body sprays. Behind the custom vanity—topped with Crema Marfil marble—a textured-tile backsplash from Walker Zanger creates a focal point. The commode is tucked behind a frosted-glass door, and niches to either side of the floor-to-ceiling mirror hold display shelves and cabinetry. Attention to detail turned this bland master bathroom into an elegant retreat. From the mosaic marble accents, to the board and baton beadboard paneling, to the decorative arches on the cabinetry toe kick – no area of this space is ignored or cast aside.
