Located in, Summit Park, Park City UT lies one of the most efficient houses in the country. The Summit Haus – designed and built by Chris Price of PCD+B, is an exploration in design and construction of advanced high performance housing. Seeing a rising demand for sustainable housing along with rising Carbon emissions leading to global warming, this house strives to show that sensible, good design can create spaces adequate for today’s housing demands while adhering to strict standards. The house was designed to meet the very rigid Passiv House rating system – 90% more efficient than a typical home in the area. The house itself was intended to nestle neatly into the 45 degree sloped site and to take full advantage of the limited solar access and views. The views range from short, highly wooded views to a long corridor out towards the Uinta Mountain range towards the east. The house was designed and built based off Passiv Haus standards, and the framing and ventilation became critical elements to maintain such minimal energy requirements. Zola triple-pane, tilt-and-turn Thermo uPVC windows contribute substantially to the home’s energy efficiency, and takes advantage of the beautiful surrounding of the location, including forrest views from the deck off of the kitchen. The solid wood bed is warm and inviting with a mid-century modern flair. Keeping your bedding white and crisp is timeless and clean, then adding wonderful accent pillows will pull in other materials and textures we love in boho/mid-century design. The rug also helps give warmth and comfort to your space. The nightstands will provide some personal storage for you and tie into the design of the desk. To keep the surface of a nightstand free of lamps when possible, so your sconces will be the perfect light source for you at bedtime. There are significant architectural elements in the bedroom that we wanted to highlight. Adding in accents of black metal ties the furnishings into the architecture, really giving the furnishings a sense of belonging. Finally, the full-length mirror is perfect for the bedroom, has an art deco vibe, and is essential for making the room look more spacious. The bench in front of the mirror helps visually ground the mirror, adds more texture to space, and is conveniently located to sit to take off your shoes at the end of a long day. Both the desk and the task lamp relate entirely back to the nightstands and again have the black metal accents. The desk chair is comfortable and stylish, the perfect blend of beauty and function. Adding shelving above the desk allows accessorize or add some essential work items up there. A hanging planter nearby gives you more plant life and visual height in the room, and of course, more great texture.

Our client’s goal was to open up the kitchen to the living room area for multiple reasons, two of which were to create an open and inviting kitchen experience, and also to bring their beautiful view of the waterways surrounding their hilltop perch all the way into the living room area. They wanted to maximize cabinet storage as well as counter space. They also wanted to have a dedicated wet bar area. We wanted to preserve the existing wood ceiling, so we had to get creative with lighting solutions as well as the vent hood. That's why you'll see cable lights, sconces and toe kick lighting to maximize the light. The range hood has an asymmetric design because we wanted to center the cooktop on the island without touching the ceiling to move the range hood. In order to maximize the views, add storage and maintain enough space for the dining table, there are shallow base cabinets along the exterior wall. We also added a new doorway into the bedroom area for privacy which had the added benefit of giving the dining room new purpose as an entertainment area. We included a wet bar with open and display shelving, two wine fridges and storage.

This mudroom drop zone is a masterclass in blending organic textures with high-functioning design for a busy household.
