Saving the original stained glass picture window from 1916, we created a focal point with a custom designed arch alcove with dentil molding. Leaded glass upper cabinets add ambiance and sparkle to the compact kitchen.

"Everything in the informal dining space as well as the living room is new," Jennifer explains. "I changed it all; the walls used to be grey and the furniture used to be off white. I had antique chippy paint cabinets and all kinds of french decor ... I have evolved from that and now want simple, fun and bright." Starting with painting the walls white, Jennifer let the room evolve as she went. "Then I started to move the furniture around to see what I had, to make sure it worked," she describes. From there it became a process of eliminating and adding back in. The brass shelving was a "picking" find that Jennifer retrieved from the side of the road. By emphasizing the large windows with white drapery, and adding in soft textural elements, Jennifer created a fresh space that exudes depth and comfort. "I would never want anyone to ever come in and say they don't feel comfortable. I feel I have created that chic, fun, eclectic style space that anyone of any age can enjoy and feel comfortable in." Inspiration for a coastal living room remodel in Portland Maine

This home office was created from an outbuilding on the property. Seagrass wall-to-wall carpet was installed for ultimate durability and a relaxed vibe. We employed a high-low aesthetic to create a space that was unique but still within budget, utilizing the owner's Stickley desk, a custom desk chair, custom blush Roman shades, a Hudson Valley Fenwater chandelier and sconces, and multiple office items from budget sources like IKEA and The Container Store. This transformation started with a builder grade bathroom and was expanded into a sauna wet room. With cedar walls and ceiling and a custom cedar bench, the sauna heats the space for a relaxing dry heat experience. The goal of this space was to create a sauna in the secondary bathroom and be as efficient as possible with the space. This bathroom transformed from a standard secondary bathroom to a ergonomic spa without impacting the functionality of the bedroom. This project was super fun, we were working inside of a guest bedroom, to create a functional, yet expansive bathroom. We started with a standard bathroom layout and by building out into the large guest bedroom that was used as an office, we were able to create enough square footage in the bathroom without detracting from the bedroom aesthetics or function. We worked with the client on her specific requests and put all of the materials into a 3D design to visualize the new space. By expanding the room slightly it gave us the needed space to relocate the toilet, the vanity and the entrance to the bathroom allowing for the wet room to have the full length of the new space. This bathroom includes a cedar sauna room that is incorporated inside of the shower, the custom cedar bench follows the curvature of the room's new layout and a window was added to allow the natural sunlight to come in from the bedroom. The aromatic properties of the cedar are delightful whether it's being used with the dry sauna heat and also when the shower is steaming the space. In the shower are matching porcelain, marble-look tiles, with architectural texture on the shower walls contrasting with the warm, smooth cedar boards. Also, by increasing the depth of the toilet wall, we were able to create useful towel storage without detracting from the room significantly. This entire project and client was a joy to work with.

3,900 SF home that has achieved a LEED Silver certification. The house is sited on a wooded hill with southern exposure and consists of two 20’ x 84’ bars. The second floor is rotated 15 degrees beyond ninety to respond to site conditions and animate the plan. Materials include a standing seam galvalume roof, native stone, and rain screen cedar siding. With the exception of the dining room, the first floor is open in all public areas, which perfectly accommodates Raymond's and Jennifer's penchant for entertaining. The painted black runner was added once Jennifer decided to remove the carpeting from the steps. It visually supports the decor of the rest of the room, and in turn becomes a highlight of the space rather than an afterthought. Built in the mid-1700s, this historic home reflects centuries of evolution, with additions made over time to meet changing needs. While each expansion added to the story of the house, the overall layout had become somewhat haphazard. Our challenge was to bring harmony and cohesion to the home while preserving the character and charm that only a centuries-old property can offer. With deep respect for the home’s architectural roots, we approached the renovation with a focus on thoughtful reconfiguration rather than dramatic intervention—creating spaces that feel intentional, balanced, and true to the original spirit of the house.

Klopf Architecture and Outer space Landscape Architects designed a new warm, modern, open, indoor-outdoor home in Los Altos, California. Inspired by mid-century modern homes but looking for something completely new and custom, the owners, a couple with two children, bought an older ranch style home with the intention of replacing it. Created on a grid, the house is designed to be at rest with differentiated spaces for activities; living, playing, cooking, dining and a piano space. The low-sloping gable roof over the great room brings a grand feeling to the space. The clerestory windows at the high sloping roof make the grand space light and airy. Upon entering the house, an open atrium entry in the middle of the house provides light and nature to the great room. The Heath tile wall at the back of the atrium blocks direct view of the rear yard from the entry door for privacy. The bedrooms, bathrooms, play room and the sitting room are under flat wing-like roofs that balance on either side of the low sloping gable roof of the main space. Large sliding glass panels and pocketing glass doors foster openness to the front and back yards. In the front there is a fenced-in play space connected to the play room, creating an indoor-outdoor play space that could change in use over the years. The play room can also be closed off from the great room with a large pocketing door. In the rear, everything opens up to a deck overlooking a pool where the family can come together outdoors. Wood siding travels from exterior to interior, accentuating the indoor-outdoor nature of the house. Where the exterior siding doesn’t come inside, a palette of white oak floors, white walls, walnut cabinetry, and dark window frames ties all the spaces together to create a uniform feeling and flow throughout the house. The custom cabinetry matches the minimal joinery of the rest of the house, a trim-less, minimal appearance. Wood siding was mitered in the corners, including where siding meets the interior drywall. Wall materials were held up off the floor with a minimal reveal. This tight detailing gives a sense of cleanliness to the house. The garage door of the house is completely flush and of the same material as the garage wall, de-emphasizing the garage door and making the street presentation of the house kinder to the neighborhood. The house is akin to a custom, modern-day Eichler home in many ways. Inspired by mid-century modern homes with today’s materials, approaches, standards, and technologies. The goals were to create an indoor-outdoor home that was energy-efficient, light and flexible for young children to grow. A Stunning and Functional Work Space Designing a custom desk and bookshelf with storage cabinets was key to creating a beautiful and functional work space. Taking cues from the living spaces we continued the simple palette of warm white oak, cream, black, and camel leather and paired it with the luscious green of the stunning Petros Koublis photograph to create a sophisticated space that feels cozy and inviting. The end result is a visually stunning room that invites moments of respite along with work. Hartley Hill Design When our clients moved into their already built home they decided to live in it for a while before making any changes. Once they were settled they decided to hire us as their interior designers to renovate and redesign various spaces of their home. As they selected the spaces to be renovated they expressed a strong need for storage and customization. They allowed us to design every detail as well as oversee the entire construction process directing our team of skilled craftsmen.
