Inspiration for a timeless family room remodel in Charlotte

2013 CHRYSALIS AWARD NATIONAL WINNER, KITCHEN REMODEL $50,000 TO $75,000 “Crowded and disturbing” is how the woman of the house described this kitchen. A big peninsula with a huge range hood blocked the kitchen off from the breakfast room, a chimney style wall blocked off another side of the space and the doorways were too narrow. The result was a cramped feel with no traffic flow and a lack of usable storage. To remedy these issues, the remodeling plan called for regrouping all tall kitchen elements into a low visibility wall, eliminating the peninsula and then creating a natural path through the space using a middle island. Relocating the stove against the room’s back wall allowed the installation of a beautiful wood mantel hood and improved the work triangle. The side walls house beautiful custom white cabinets; one side housing the pantry, refrigerator and double wall ovens, the other the kitchen sink and dishwasher. The center island features a mahogany wood countertop and provides plenty of workspace above and storage below. Contrasting with the glazed cabinets, the woodwork is a highlight of the project and a key part of delivering on the homeowner’s desire for a bright, clean kitchen. They installed exotic mahogany floors to complement center wood Island. The floors also had created a casual ambiance, especially against the soft lemon chiffon wall paint. The ultimate French country style kitchen was completed by furnishing the old breakfast area with casual seating rather than a formal table.

A galley kitchen located between the family room and dining room, connected only by narrow doorways, it wasn’t conducive to this family’s busy lifestyle. The 20-foot wide bearing wall that separated the kitchen from family room was the first thing to go. Then, windows facing the back deck were removed, the header was enlarged and French doors were installed for easy access to the deck. The sink and dishwasher were relocated to the new island which also provides additional storage, and importantly, more seating. Pendant lighting combines with recessed lighting to brighten the space. Light-colored, painted cabinetry and complementing granite counters run floor to ceiling with glass display cabinetry installed as uppers. Upscale appliances complete the amenities. The homeowners greatly enjoy their much larger kitchen with its open floor plan and improved traffic flow.

Modern Spanish Hacienda architecture home with a mix of old world Spanish and mid century design aesthetic throughout the home. The custom kitchen has clean lines paired with modern appliances and old world Spanish accents which pairs handsomely with the custom clay pavers and linen grout of the flooring throughout. The custom alder wood cabinetry is painted farrow & ball Hague Blue with the exposed bevel sanded back down to its natural wood with very subtle hints of the blue showing through (sadly the professional photographs do not do this kitchen any justice!) and the custom alder wood island have heavy brass rings separating the massive leg sections. Absolutely amazing in person!

THE GREAT FAMILY ROOM: A flowing stair accommodates a natural 3-foot drop of the site, into the Great Room. The light and airy Contemporary Santa Fe Design gives room definition while allowing a flowing openness and views to nearby mountains and patios. Kitchen cabinets are wire-brushed cedar with copper slate fan hood and backsplashes. Walls are a Faux painted beige color. Interior doors are Knotty Alder with medium honey finish.

DETAIL: Custom island with toe- kick heater This client's cabinets were in great condition, so we opted to simply refinish them. We also made a custom island to match. All other items are brand new. Featuring "Golden Typhoon" granite counter tops, Tarpunta /Ray Light back splash and mosaic tiles, large format floor tiles, and new hardware/lights/appliances. The original plaster "tiles" and walls have also been painted with Sherwin Williams "Compatible Cream" and "Dover White" paint colors.

Flanking the left and right sides of the arched entryway of the dining room are beautiful "Brookhill" maple cabinets in White Icing by Medallion Cabinetry. The lighted, glass door cabinetry helped to keep these areas light and airy. The countertops are "Ice Crystals" quartzite, the backsplash tiles are marble and glass arabesque and the custom hardware is by Edgar Berebi.

This casita was completely renovated from floor to ceiling in preparation of Airbnb short term romantic getaways. The color palette of teal green, blue and white was brought to life with curated antiques that were stripped of their dark stain colors, collected fine linens, fine plaster wall finishes, authentic Turkish rugs, antique and custom light fixtures, original oil paintings and moorish chevron tile and Moroccan pattern choices.
