Our busy Silicon Valley clients asked us to convert their tight-quartered 1960’s ranch house to a gracious family home that would meet their long term needs. Ease of living was paramount, both in functionality and in ordered design. The project was completed on a moderate budget.While retaining most of the structure of the existing house to avoid costly structural changes, we opened walls to improve the sight lines and flow of the house and bring in more light. We made small additions at the front and back bedrooms to gain space for the family and relatives. An existing underused patio area was improved with a simple outdoor kitchen and overhang to extend the living space to the outside. Costs were kept down with choices of modest materials. Everything was made to be functional. Ample storage has been built into the right places. The details of the kitchen were carefully worked out to accommodate all the wishes of the various cooks in the family. The house is set up to be easy to keep clean. Acoustic walls separate living from bedroom spaces so adults can enjoy time together while children sleep. The outdoor kitchen has easy access to the indoor kitchen and the garage, and its setup promotes socializing while cooking outdoors. A large part of the narrow back yard was previously unusable space due to a steep slope up to a neighbor’s higher fence. With a new retaining wall and some re-grading we took back more of the yard for the patio and play space on a new lawn. The remodeled house is a mix of contemporary and traditional elements. Cool colors have a calming effect. Traditional items such as prairie style windows, trellis, mosaic tiles, and Shaker style cabinets, break down the scale in an otherwise streamlined, contemporary design. A new gabled roof with a broad arch at the front of the house marks the entry and resolves a challenging form where the central entry is set back from walls on both sides. A pristine walnut entry door opens into the main level great room. A jaw dropping kitchen, family room and behind a wallpapered hidden door, sits a small addition giving the needed square footage for a stylish office. The grand 15 ft kitchen island takes advantage of the open space in the center of the room. Drenched in tropical storm granite, features luxurious double water fall edges on both ends, ample seating, massive countertop space to entertain and with built in appliances, this show stealing island quickly became the go-to spot.

This house is a classic cottage located on a secluded, wooded street below street level. The goal with this project was to create a garden that fit the east coast feel of house while allowing the plants to flourish in the Southern California climate. Looking to Mediterranean adaptive plants we went with a plant pallet consisting of deep green foliage with white and purple flowers. We added the Purple-leaved Eastern Redbud trees to provide nice contract with the other deep green foliage used in the project. These deciduous trees will also work to help moderate the temperature in and around the house. In the heat of the summer when the trees are leafed out they shade the patio iand front rooms of the house. In the winter when the trees lose their leaves sun is allowed in to warm the patio and help heat the home.

The clients are original owners of their contemporary home built in the early 80's'. Their master bath was inefficient with an oversized under-utilized tub with steps taking up 1/3 of the space and tall walls separating the vanity area from the enclosed shower, blocking potential views of the wooded lot. The new design maintained the original 8'x15' space with 10' ceilings. Interior walls were removed, a 54" corner whirlpool tub was installed adjacent to a 36" vanity and new windows with transoms replaced old drafty ones. New floating vanities with tall cabinets create the new ladies vanity area. The 3 sided, 2 person frameless shower enclosure is a highlight of the new space. Photography by Curtis Martin

Inspiration for a cottage kitchen remodel in Chicago

The Leach Residence is a 1700SF single floor residence located on a remaining fragment of the original 6000 acre “Big Grove” that once sprinkled the prairie landscape of Champaign County. The current site is surrounded by uneven development that includes multi-story apartment to the south, small neighborhood houses to the north, new moderate income development to the east, and the original homestead to the west. The form of the house invokes vernacular building forms, which are then combined with contemporary exterior materials of dark-finished metal and vertical black locust siding. The simple plan features an open plan with carefully placed windows that maximize the landscape experience while also maintaining privacy from adjacent developments. A clerestory spine traverses the full interior in a north-south direction, tracking the sun throughout the day. This volume unites the other shared spaces of the design, creating a gestalt perception of the object from both the interior and the exterior.

the generous oak dining table is centered between a black, stone-topped, ridged credenza and a fireplace with a long built-in bench. the matching chairs from the game table in the living room can be pulled in for extra seating at the dining table. a vibrant painting by jessica magee hangs above the credenza and brings bold warmth into the space.
