Our homeowners purchased this home for its excellent location and great bones. They were desirous of returning it to the era of it’s time while updating and modernizing it with the elegance it deserved. To add to our challenges, they were living out of the country during our design and renovation, making for great communications utilizing modern technology to ensure we could deliver what they hoped to achieve. We opened some space in the kitchen to create an updated and more functional kitchen for this active family, relocating appliances for efficiency, adding an island and relocating a chimney. We had structural challenges with the sagging hardwood floors, which required us to reframe floor systems, and while we were at it, we antique finished the hardwoods reminiscent of the 1940’s. We added wainscoting in the dining room and entry stair hallway to enhance the old-world look and added some arched openings to match other areas of the home. We also added custom moldings to the fireplace wall to allow it to shine as a focal point in the space, utilizing restored antique light fixtures. The finished result is stunning and truly honors the integrity of the original time period of this home.

Klopf Architecture and Outer space Landscape Architects designed a new warm, modern, open, indoor-outdoor home in Los Altos, California. Inspired by mid-century modern homes but looking for something completely new and custom, the owners, a couple with two children, bought an older ranch style home with the intention of replacing it. Created on a grid, the house is designed to be at rest with differentiated spaces for activities; living, playing, cooking, dining and a piano space. The low-sloping gable roof over the great room brings a grand feeling to the space. The clerestory windows at the high sloping roof make the grand space light and airy. Upon entering the house, an open atrium entry in the middle of the house provides light and nature to the great room. The Heath tile wall at the back of the atrium blocks direct view of the rear yard from the entry door for privacy. The bedrooms, bathrooms, play room and the sitting room are under flat wing-like roofs that balance on either side of the low sloping gable roof of the main space. Large sliding glass panels and pocketing glass doors foster openness to the front and back yards. In the front there is a fenced-in play space connected to the play room, creating an indoor-outdoor play space that could change in use over the years. The play room can also be closed off from the great room with a large pocketing door. In the rear, everything opens up to a deck overlooking a pool where the family can come together outdoors. Wood siding travels from exterior to interior, accentuating the indoor-outdoor nature of the house. Where the exterior siding doesn’t come inside, a palette of white oak floors, white walls, walnut cabinetry, and dark window frames ties all the spaces together to create a uniform feeling and flow throughout the house. The custom cabinetry matches the minimal joinery of the rest of the house, a trim-less, minimal appearance. Wood siding was mitered in the corners, including where siding meets the interior drywall. Wall materials were held up off the floor with a minimal reveal. This tight detailing gives a sense of cleanliness to the house. The garage door of the house is completely flush and of the same material as the garage wall, de-emphasizing the garage door and making the street presentation of the house kinder to the neighborhood. The house is akin to a custom, modern-day Eichler home in many ways. Inspired by mid-century modern homes with today’s materials, approaches, standards, and technologies. The goals were to create an indoor-outdoor home that was energy-efficient, light and flexible for young children to grow. Hayden Estate Spa: Kohler Luxury & Artisan Knotty Alder Finishes In this Hayden, Idaho, residence, we balanced a high-tech hydrotherapy suite with a sophisticated bathing sanctuary. This view highlights the transition from the active steam zone to a tranquil soaking area, utilizing a curated palette of natural wood, Italian stone, and professional-grade Kohler plumbing fixtures. Refined Design & Technical Features: Kohler Air Therapy Suite: The centerpiece of the relaxation zone is a Kohler air tub, providing a gentle, effervescent massage. We paired the tub with a precision Kohler floor-mounted tub filler, creating a sleek, sculptural silhouette against the expansive view of the Idaho landscape. Artisan Knotty Alder Woodwork: The cabinetry and architectural trim feature hand-selected Knotty Alder wood with a traditional Shaker-style door detail. This choice brings a warm, organic texture to the room, grounding the modern technology in a classic "Mountain Modern" aesthetic. Italian Porcelain Foundation: The entire space is unified by large-format Italian porcelain body tile. To ensure year-round comfort, we installed a thermostat-controlled radiant heating system beneath the tile, providing a consistent, inviting warmth throughout the en-suite. Precision Task Lighting: The freestanding vanity is anchored by a high-definition LED-lit mirror, offering shadow-free illumination that is essential for both functionality and modern ambiance. Seamless Material Flow: The transition from the wainscot tile to the custom wood casings demonstrates our commitment to precision framing and finish work, ensuring that every material intersection is clean and intentional.
