A PLACE TO GATHER Location: Eagan, MN, USA This family of five wanted an inviting space to gather with family and friends. Mom, the primary cook, wanted a large island with more organized storage – everything in its place – and a crisp white kitchen with the character of an older home. Challenges: Design an island that could accommodate this family of five for casual weeknight dinners. Create more usable storage within the existing kitchen footprint. Design a better transition between the upper cabinets on the 8-foot sink wall and the adjoining 9-foot cooktop wall. Make room for more counter space around the cooktop. It was poorly lit, cluttered with small appliances and confined by the tall oven cabinet. Solutions: A large island, that seats 5 comfortably, replaced the small island and kitchen table. This allowed for more storage including cookbook shelves, a heavy-duty roll out shelf for the mixer, a 2-bin recycling center and a bread drawer. Tall pantries with decorative grilles were placed between the kitchen and family room. These created ample storage and helped define each room, making each one feel larger, yet more intimate. A space intentionally separates the upper cabinets on the sink wall from those on the cooktop wall. This created symmetry on the sink wall and made room for an appliance garage, which keeps the countertops uncluttered. Moving the double ovens to the former pantry location made way for more usable counter space around the cooktop and a dramatic focal point with the hood, cabinets and marble backsplash. Special Features: Custom designed corbels and island legs lend character. Gilt open lanterns, antiqued nickel grilles on the pantries, and the soft linen shade at the kitchen sink add personality and charm. The unique bronze hardware with a living finish creates the patina of an older home. A walnut island countertop adds the warmth and feel of a kitchen table. This homeowner truly understood the idea of living with the patina of marble. Her grandmother’s marble-topped antique table inspired the Carrara countertops. This home was a blend of modern and traditional, mixed finishes, classic subway tiles, and ceramic light fixtures. The kitchen was kept bright and airy with high-end appliances for the avid cook and homeschooling mother. As an animal loving family and owner of two furry creatures, we added a little whimsy with cat wallpaper in their laundry room.

Ulrich designer: Julia Kleyman Photography by Peter Rymwid This grand Saddle River kitchen was created in support of the Hackensack University Medical Center Designer Showhouse of New Jersey in 2012. The new design transformed a dreary and dated 80's kitchen into a functional, comfortable and eye-pleasing space with clean transitional lines and touches of traditional charm in its detail. The rich brown finish of the island cabinetry gives the room warmth, and juxtaposes in lovely contrast the white cabinetry of the perimeter. Large pendant lights add modern "bling" and balance the large room.

Winner of "HOME OF THE YEAR 2016" San Diego Home and Garden Lifestyles Magazine featuring this great contemporary kitchen remodel in An Irving Gill renovation near Balboa Park stays true to its historic essence. More about the project. This young couple has a creative back ground, one being an actor and the other being a teacher who inspires others. They now enjoy a new historical home with amazing touches of modern styling and comforts. The home was designed by renowned architect Irving Gill in 1905 and is on the historical register but it only applies to the exterior of the home. The brick pillar is an original feature from the home's turn-of-the-century stove. The window casings were built to replicate the original Douglas Fir windows as seen on Gill's original plans, and all the molding was redone in his signature flush style as well. The central feature in this kitchen is the Yellow Italian Bertazzoni Range with a single herringbone tiled back splash. The cabinetry is a light gray paired perfectly with a dark "graphite" gray island, and industrial vents at the toe kick enhance the overall look. Inspiration for a farmhouse u-shaped open concept kitchen remodel in Chicago with a farmhouse sink, shaker cabinets, dark wood cabinets, beige backsplash, ceramic backsplash and stainless steel appliances

Our clients came to us wanting to update their kitchen while keeping their traditional and timeless style. They desired to open up the kitchen to the dining room and to widen doorways to make the kitchen feel less closed off from the rest of the home. They wanted to create more functional storage and working space at the island. Other goals were to replace the sliding doors to the back deck, add mudroom storage and update lighting for a brighter, cleaner look. We created a kitchen and dining space that brings our homeowners joy to cook, dine and spend time together in. We installed a longer, more functional island with barstool seating in the kitchen. We added pantry cabinets with roll out shelves. We widened the doorways and opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room. We added cabinetry with glass display doors in the kitchen and also the dining room. We updated the lighting and replaced sliding doors to the back deck. In the mudroom, we added closed storage and a built-in bench.

Honoring the client’s love of classical interiors, we layered the traditional architecture with a crisp contrast of saturated colors, clean moldings and refined white marble. In the living room, tailored furnishings are punctuated by modern accents, bespoke draperies and jewelry like sconces. Built-in custom cabinetry, lasting finishes and indoor/outdoor fabrics were used throughout to create a fresh, elegant yet livable home for this active family of five.
