The homeowner is a wonderful cook and she makes multiple meals a day for her family.
The large drawers on the island hold all of the everyday items readily available to cook those fabulous meals.

This master walk-in closet was completed in antique white with glazed drawer faces, slanted shoe shelves, inlay glass doors, brushed chrome hardware, multiple hanging areas and shelving. The island provides drawers for clothing as well as a jewelry insert and pull-out hamper. The crystal knobs and false end panels finish the look. Additional storage is available in the built in bench under the window.

The new kitchen features a large, asymmetrical island that provides lots of room for big baking projects. The main advantage of the island over the old peninsula is that it allows people to move in and out of the kitchen from two directions, and it provides a large working space where multiple people can work together during family gatherings. Two wall mounted ovens give the owner the space she needs to do lots of baking in record time.

The original small 2 bedroom dwelling was deconstructed piece by piece, with every element recycled/re-used. The larger, newly built home + studio uses much less energy than the original. In fact, the home and office combined are net zero (the home’s blower door test came in at Passive House levels, though certification was not procured). The transformed home boasts a better functioning layout, increased square footage, and bold accent colors to boot. The multiple level patios book-end the home’s front and rear facades. The added outdoor living with the nearly 13’ sliding doors allows ample natural light into the home. The transom windows create an increased openness with the floor to ceiling glazing. The larger tilt-turn windows throughout the home provide ventilation and open views for the 3-level contemporary home. In addition, the larger overhangs provide increased passive thermal protection from the scattered sunny days. The conglomeration of exterior materials is diverse and playful with dark stained wood, concrete, natural wood finish, and teal horizontal siding. A fearless selection of a bright orange window brings a bold accent to the street-side composition. These elements combined create a dynamic modern design to the inclusive Portland backdrop.

The family wanted a rustic/Italian feel that still had an updated/modern look to it. They also wanted to keep with the traditional style of their home and décor. Tumbled travertine backsplash added a rustic feel to the kitchen, but we kept the design pretty clean and simple for a more timeless look. We added some Sonoma tantrum glass detail behind the cooktop and behind the built-ins for a pop of color that played off the granite. For the cabinetry, we used Dura Supreme. A black distressed island, and an ivory paint w/ espresso glaze on the perimeter. The creamy St. Cecilia countertops added warmth and pulled the white and black cabinetry together, and added plenty of extra seating. The charming oil rubbed bronze hardware and lighting fixtures really play nicely off the black island. The new medium toned oak hardwood flooring throughout the entire house gives it a very warm and inviting feel. The new layout provides them plenty of space for multiple cooks so they’re family can all relax and be together in the space.

Wild View Farm includes a new “Forever home” (we deconstructed an existing house with a 90% landfill diversion rate), and enhancements to several working barns. The 80 acre site was an original homestead farm from the 1890’s. Both its buildings and soil had become severely degraded. The owners are working to holistically restore this property and make it a model of modern regenerative farming. They are planting hundreds of trees, re-introducing livestock and working with Dryland Agroecology Research and High Plains Permaculture to restore the soil.
The -51 HERS rated home is not just energy-efficient - it’s a model of “Regenerative design”. The deep green house design included multiple challenges – foremost was how to create a Passive Solar design that also took full advantage of the massive views to the West. We solved it with an L shaped building that optimized passive and active solar strategies on the south face, then actively protected the western facade with a giant covered porch and tuned glazing. The home’s leading-edge energy package includes a Ground source heat pump, a large roof-mounted solar PV array, battery back-up, EV chargers, and Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), Energy Star Appliances and windows, a robust foam insulation shell and LED lighting.
We also endeavored to craft a modern day interpretation of the farmhouse typology, with a low-slung simple gable-roofed form that would feel like it’s always been there. The exterior material palette of limestone, cementitious stucco and heavy timber gives it a rich Colorado Modern Farmhouse feel. The home is full of custom details like walls of vaulted glass to capture the sweeping mountain views, an AI Smart Home control system, a sleeping loft for kids and guests, a hard-working Butler’s Pantry, a gourmet outdoor kitchen, a pool & spa, a cozy office nook for reading, and a lovely built-in bench for morning coffee. Phase 2 of this project will include a Farmworker ADU and a full renovation of the existing historic barn.

The new Milgard Tuscany window above the sink, with its dual glaze, ensures energy efficiency while offering a picturesque view. The interior walls, painted in a clean white, further accentuate the kitchen island, painted in a soft baby blue, harmonizing with the light blue tiles, and creating a visually pleasing palette.
This remodel isn't just about aesthetics; functionality is at its core. The kitchen island, seating four comfortably, is equipped with multiple outlets, perfect for the modern, multitasking San Jose household. The choice of matte brushed nickel for the cabinet knobs and pulls unifies the kitchen's design elements with a touch of understated elegance.
A significant architectural change in this remodel is the removal of the wall separating the great room and kitchen. This strategic decision by May Construction has transformed the space into an open floor plan, fostering a sense of togetherness and fluidity. An exposed beam adorns the ceiling, subtly defining the kitchen and great room areas while maintaining an open, airy feel.
May Construction has masterfully transformed a once segmented and dim space into an open, light-filled haven of modern luxury and efficiency. This San Jose kitchen and great room remodel is a testament to their commitment to quality, functionality, and aesthetic excellence. BEFORE Picture showing soffits, original cabinetry, which we kept the base cabinet boxes & replaced the doors & hinges, drawer heads, drawer boxes guides, in order to not disturb the new granite countertops, sink, and faucet. The microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher, were the only other items saved and re-used in the new kitchen.

This two-toned kitchen features Brighton Cabinetry in multiple colors. The perimeter cabinets are maple with a Maple Dover finish and Neoga Ridge Raised door style. The island, range hood and accent pieces are cherry with a Cherry Hazelnut stain and Ebony Glaze. The countertops are Minotauro granite.

The Bowtie shape tile is the newest shape we have created. It is a simple shape but delivers a very mesmerizing look when multiples are put together. The homeowner used our Pesto glaze as the main color throughout the installation. With Quails Egg for an accent on the hearth. With the fireplace projecting a couple of inches from the wall the L trims were used to give it a frame. The fireplace has that modern and at the same time timeless feel to it.

When we first began the design of this project, the clients’ main priority was to get more room in their kitchen. The wall that separated the kitchen and dining space was load bearing and spanned the living room space as well, so rather than removing it the way we might in some floorplans, we left a header and created a large opening to help the flow between the spaces. When it came to the style of the kitchen, the ranch-style home was well suited for a classic, transitional style with farmhouse details such as a white apron-front sink.
We decided on the two-toned cabinetry after originally discussing the idea of white, but realizing that with grandkids and dogs, having white cabinetry so near exterior doors might not be the best option. The lower cabinets are maple stained with a color called “Coffee” and the white upper cabinets feature a similar colored glaze in the detailing to help tie them together. The floor is a popular CoreTEC product called “Red River Hickory”. The overall tone matches that of the lower cabinets for a seamless look. The white backsplash tile and countertop with simple veining continue the two-toned look.
The range hood is a new Zephyr fixture originally designed for commercial kitchens, but became a good choice for homes with low ceilings, as the high suction power allows us to meet building codes without obstructing any views. The other appliances are from the GE Café line – these pieces feature copper accents on the handles, which gave us a great place to start when choosing the showstopping copper pendant over the sink.
The redesigned space gives more room for multiple cooks and the removal of the wall allows in tons of extra light from the dining room – without moving or replacing a single window or exterior door. There is ample prep room, storage space, and seating for visitors to the kitchen. The homeowners love their new space, and we are sure they will continue to love it for years to come.
