The attic space was transformed from a cold storage area of 700 SF to usable space with closed mechanical room and 'stage' area for kids. Structural collar ties were wrapped and stained to match the rustic hand-scraped hardwood floors. LED uplighting on beams adds great daylight effects. Short hallways lead to the dormer windows, required to meet the daylight code for the space. An additional steel metal 'hatch' ships ladder in the floor as a second code-required egress is a fun alternate exit for the kids, dropping into a closet below. The main staircase entrance is concealed with a secret bookcase door. The space is heated with a Mitsubishi attic wall heater, which sufficiently heats the space in Wisconsin winters. The challenge with this project was to transform a very traditional house into something more modern and suited to the lifestyle of a young couple just starting a new family. We achieved this by lightening the overall color palette with soft grays and neutrals. Then we replaced the traditional dark colored wood and tile flooring with lighter wide plank hardwood and stone floors. Next we redesigned the kitchen into a more workable open plan and used top of the line professional level appliances and light pigmented oil stained oak cabinetry. Finally we painted the heavily carved stained wood moldings and library and den cabinetry with a fresh coat of soft pale light reflecting gloss paint. Photographer: James Koch

The details continue on the interior of the plan. The main level includes a great room and bedroom/study with coffered ceiling details along with an open kitchen and dining room arrangement that simplifies entertaining. Outdoor living space is abundant, with a screen porch off the dining room and an oversized, sky lit covered porch on the rear.

This kitchen is the perfect play on modern versus classic. The melamine grey cabinetry is very modern yet the wood grain gives it that more traditional feel. All the appliances are modern stainless steel. The lighting pendants are very transitional as is the quartz countertops. Although not shown well in this photo, the countertops, which also have been applied to the walls as a back splash, have a grey veining, giving them the appearance of carrara marble. Quartz is a great alternative to marble, as it is much more function and maintenance free.
