Rustic Farmhouse: Garvin-Weeks Farmstead The Garvin-Weeks Farmstead in beautiful North Reading, built c1790, has enjoyed a first floor makeover complete with a new kitchen, family room and master suite. Particular attention was given to preserve the historic details of the house while modernizing and opening up the space for today’s lifestyle. The open concept farmhouse style kitchen is striking with its antique beams and rafters, handmade and hand planed cabinets, distressed floors, custom handmade soapstone farmer’s sink, marble counter tops, kitchen island comprised of reclaimed wood with a milk paint finish, all setting the stage for the elaborate custom painted tile work. Skylights above bathe the space in natural light. Walking through the warm family room gives one the sense of history and days gone by, culminating in a quintessential looking, but fabulously updated new England master bedroom and bath. This beautiful and tranquil kitchen was enlarged without adding square footage to the room. By relocating the kitchen table closer to the wall and adding a banquette for seating, we were able to gain 18" of cabinet space which allowed for the wall oven and rotation of the island with seating for 3. The island also contains a wine cooler and extra storage for things every cook needs. Double paneled doors on the cabinets with seeded glass inserts break up the row of cabinets without loosing the symmetrical balance of the design. Drawer space abounds and each cabinet is outfitted with custom interior accessories. A pull out pantry located next to the Sub Zero refrigerator keeps everyday food at the cooks fingertips. A custom wood hood with a large ventilation system tops a 36" professional style range. We used the same fabric on the window treatment over the sink as on the chair cushions. 1980's Kitchen Renovation: This was a complete renovation. The formal dining room was eliminated, allowing for a larger kitchen, a walk-in pantry, and hearth area...resulting in a more functional use of space for this growing family. Viking appliances, (previously electric, converted to gas), granite, and custom, tea-stained, distressed cabinets configured to add a "Lazy Susan", a wine rack, deep drawers, a spice drawer, and a book shelf end. This was the darkest corner of the former kitchen. The white painted kitchen cabinets and an oak island stained gray with Carrera marble countertops create a very trendy room that is very open and light. Photography by Greg Hoppe.

With this kitchen we wanted to keep it light, bright and beachy. So we used a beadboard cabinet on the bottom but left a simple shaker on top to keep from becoming overwhelming. We added a lot of glass features to make it look large and open. We installed a large bay window to supply even more outdoor light and last but not least used a gorgeous ocean looking granite to really tie in that beachy feeling.

The primary goal for this project was to craft a modernist derivation of pueblo architecture. Set into a heavily laden boulder hillside, the design also reflects the nature of the stacked boulder formations. The site, located near local landmark Pinnacle Peak, offered breathtaking views which were largely upward, making proximity an issue. Maintaining southwest fenestration protection and maximizing views created the primary design constraint. The views are maximized with careful orientation, exacting overhangs, and wing wall locations. The overhangs intertwine and undulate with alternating materials stacking to reinforce the boulder strewn backdrop. The elegant material palette and siting allow for great harmony with the native desert. The Elegant Modern at Estancia was the collaboration of many of the Valley's finest luxury home specialists. Interiors guru David Michael Miller contributed elegance and refinement in every detail. Landscape architect Russ Greey of Greey | Pickett contributed a landscape design that not only complimented the architecture, but nestled into the surrounding desert as if always a part of it. And contractor Manship Builders -- Jim Manship and project manager Mark Laidlaw -- brought precision and skill to the construction of what architect C.P. Drewett described as "a watch."
