This cozy lake cottage skillfully incorporates a number of features that would normally be restricted to a larger home design. Where warmer temperatures and drier conditions make seasonal displays of cut evergreens a non-starter, create a winter windowbox that’s planted with lots of greenery in shades from emerald to lime and add a few seasonal touches. Here a bed of ivy (looks great year round) is tricked-out with white cyclamen, potted-up yellow peppers, and a few winter pansies. Can’t find peppers? Swap in fresh citrus such as kumquats. We think this one’s made for twinkle lights!

A summer house built around salvaged barn beams. Not far from the beach, the secluded site faces south to the ocean and views. The large main barn room embraces the main living spaces, including the kitchen. The barn room is anchored on the north with a stone fireplace and on the south with a large bay window. The wing to the east organizes the entry hall and sleeping rooms.

The panoramic doors provide instant indoor/outdoor living onto this gorgeous Brazilian hardwood deck that features an outdoor kitchen with concrete countertops, grill, sink, refrigerator and kegerator with a double tap.
