We renovated and/or created following: family room, workroom, laundry room, guest suite, home office, and wine cellar in the basement; living room, dining room, sun room with bar, family room, powder room, kitchen, and breakfast area on the first floor; master suite and three bedrooms and two bathrooms on second floor; home office, and study on third floor; and painting studio, reading room, bathroom, and 3-car garage in carriage house. The home includes a Japanese Tearoom and a Japanese Guest Suite. The project included installation of all new systems, including forced air heating and cooling, hydronic radiant heating on all floors, new plumbing and bathrooms throughout, new insulation, and a new slate roof with copper gutters and leaders. We also renovated the carriage house where we added dormers, a porch, and transformed the building into a painting studio, with views out to the new Japanese Garden.

This unique 2.75 acre property, located on the Roosevelt Channel on Captiva Island, was transformed from a barren construction site into a tropical garden that would rival some botanical gardens. The homeowners are garden enthusiasts and collaborated closely with Bob Walsh and the landscape team to create a variety of lush landscape gardens including; a Tropical Flowering Tree Garden, Moonlight & Scent Garden, Citrus & Edible Garden, Specimen Palm Gardens, Tropical Shade Gardens, Butterfly Gardens, and Waterfall Gardens with lagoon pools for Koi fish. Outdoor living was of primary consideration as well. The Seminole Indian Chickee Hut overlooks a private Island Beach with hammocks to offer a retreat for entertaining and relaxation while a 42 foot circular Stone Labyrinth is a place for meditation and contemplation. Moon and accent landscape lighting allow the numerous pathways and gardens to be enjoyed well beyond sunset.

This client’s busy lifestyle includes a pool, preteens and pets which called for a durable and waterproof flooring to run not only through the kitchen but through the entire lower level of their home. We found the perfect flooring product which spurred the new kitchen design. Our clients wanted their builder basic kitchen to have a fresh and updated feel. We started by lowering the bar to create a more open feel to the living room. We transformed their unused desk area into a function wine bar. We removed the original island and designed a larger custom island to incorporate a unique pet feeding area as well as a drawer microwave. New appliances were added throughout as well as painted cabinets, granite countertops and glass subway tile as the backsplash. Extensive lighting upgrades included numerous overhead can lights, pendants over the bar and Adorne under cabinet lighting and electrical system (allows for an uninterrupted backsplash). Contrast in the Kitchen – Texture to Taste in a Grand Junction, CO custom home We normally associate texture with food, clothes, and even sound. In reality, it is a part of every aspect of our lives. In our Grand Junction, Appleton, Fruita, Palisade, and Redlands, Colorado homes, texture lives on everything from our walls to washcloths. It isn’t something we normally consider holistically or view with intent. While designing interiors, texture becomes our way to bring visual interest and emotion into the space. Adding textures to a space invites touch and evokes an understanding of the design intent. Materials like linen and wood can be combined to make a space feel streamlined yet cozy. Leather and velvet can be paired to create a luxurious retreat. In one of our recent projects, our clients had a distinct vision for their new kitchen and outdoor custom home living spaces. They were in need of a design that combined their kitchen, living, and outdoor spaces into a seamless oasis for their everyday routines. Their home has a unique architectural voice and they wanted to emphasize the character that was already there. Blending textures and colors throughout this project was how everything remained cohesive and spirited. The purpose of contrasting materials We used contrasting materials in the cabinetry to distinguish between the perimeter – high gloss – and the natural gathering space – maple. By contrasting the soft nature of maple in the cabinets and in the flooring with the harder textures of concrete and steel, we were able to offset the space’s tendency to feel like an alpine cabin. However, using contrasting textures does not always provide a dynamic interior. The high-gloss cabinets function as a vessel for various textures. They take on whatever happens to be reflected in them, bringing in elements from unexpected sources. The function of texture Along with rich black hardware, the unique backsplash adds an element of handcrafted care that naturally draws your eye throughout the space. The unevenness of each tile provides the space with intentional imperfections, giving it life and visual delight. Textures like these are great conversation starters or simply eye candy. To extend their living and dining spaces to the exterior, our clients also updated the numerous decks around the home, as well as the cladding. This gave us the opportunity to develop a texture and color story for their exteriors. Considering finishes in a location as distinctive as the Western Slope can either be viewed as a challenge or an opportunity. We have the desert, evergreen groves, riversides, and snowstorms to glean inspiration from while designing. For us, utilizing palettes that compliment the home’s natural surroundings is crucial. This home happens to live on a densely wooded plot of land with mature trees providing plenty of shade. This backdrop informed our color selections, while the existing architecture drove the material selections. The wood decking adds warmth, the horizontal cream siding brightens, the gray cedar leaves a part of the original architectural intent, and the green entry wall adds drama. The existing beams were left original because it is difficult to find materials that match the grandeur of the home. The open concept we used at the main level combined the kitchen, dining room, and 2 separate seating areas, all in one great space with sweeping ocean views. Even though each space is connected, the areas are well defined and are full of purpose. We deliberate on space planning and floor plan creation to ensure that ‘open concept’ is still refined and dignified. Nana Wall Door systems were used in the kitchen, family, dining areas and master bedroom in order to bring in the view and create the ideal indoor/outdoor living experiences. This is the chandelier in full of the previous closeup photo. We produced this vibrantly colored outdoor chandelier for a client's roofed patio area. Do not be deceived by the thin wires; we use taut, aircraft-strength cables that keep the chandelier stable, secure and safe.

This bedroom went through a repurposing as well. We brought the beds and linens down from the upstairs bedroom and at the client’s request worked them into the whole house scheme. The client requested that we include the lime colored accent pillows into this guest bedroom. We found old wicker chairs, a whitewashed table and accent chair and a roped area rug in other rooms as well as watercolor art that we combined to pull off a comfortable and casual setting. All furnishings and accessories belonged to the client. We just moved things around a bit and replaced fabric valances (as throughout the home) with simple, white painted wood valances. The blinds were carried over from the original plan. The glass sailboats we hung from the mirrors were found in a bureau chest. We were very happy with the end result. The adjoining bathroom was renovated with a new white vanity and open shelving, a dark hunter green Cambria countertop and new mirrors. We had the tiles restored and added a white shower curtain. As with the entire home, all floors were replaced with a wood look surface made of vinyl. I have had numerous trades ask whether the floors are wood…They look that real. They are a perfect option, particularly for those living near water. These were manufactured by Coretec and meet all safety standards from California. They do not emit dangerous toxins and are safe for children and animals. They were purchased through Capital Flooring in Petoskey, MI and were installed by Harborview Builders of Petoskey, MI. They look fabulous. This unique 2.75 acre property, located on the Roosevelt Channel on Captiva Island, was transformed from a barren construction site into a tropical garden that would rival some botanical gardens. The homeowners are garden enthusiasts and collaborated closely with Bob Walsh and the landscape team to create a variety of lush landscape gardens including; a Tropical Flowering Tree Garden, Moonlight & Scent Garden, Citrus & Edible Garden, Specimen Palm Gardens, Tropical Shade Gardens, Butterfly Gardens, and Waterfall Gardens with lagoon pools for Koi fish. Outdoor living was of primary consideration as well. The Seminole Indian Chickee Hut overlooks a private Island Beach with hammocks to offer a retreat for entertaining and relaxation while a 42 foot circular Stone Labyrinth is a place for meditation and contemplation. Moon and accent landscape lighting allow the numerous pathways and gardens to be enjoyed well beyond sunset.

Originally built in 1915 in the Shingle style, this house was “modernized” in the 1940’s to be a center hall colonial. The transformation resulted in several eccentricities that, when combined with the history of the house, informed our design. We have been working with the family for many years, and have been responsible for the architecture, the interior design, and selection of all furniture, finishes, artwork, lighting, antiques, etc. We have also coordinated the efforts of numerous other consultants, including the landscape architect, the well driller, the landscape lighting designer, and more. We have also designed multiple custom furniture pieces, and worked with numerous artisans and craftspeople on specific pieces for the house. Our design retains the character and detail of original house, yet works in furniture pieces and design elements that seamlessly tie together a blend of western and eastern influences. We renovated and/or created following: family room, workroom, laundry room, guest suite, home office, and wine cellar in the basement; living room, dining room, sun room with bar, family room, powder room, kitchen, and breakfast area on the first floor; master suite and three bedrooms and two bathrooms on second floor; home office, and study on third floor; and painting studio, reading room, bathroom, and 3-car garage in carriage house. The home includes a Japanese Tearoom and a Japanese Guest Suite. The project included installation of all new systems, including forced air heating and cooling, hydronic radiant heating on all floors, new plumbing and bathrooms throughout, new insulation, and a new slate roof with copper gutters and leaders. We also renovated the carriage house where we added dormers, a porch, and transformed the building into a painting studio, with views out to the new Japanese Garden.
