Spectrum Construction & Development, based out of Roxbury Twp., New Jersey is the recipient of the 2016 Awards of Excellence presented by the Metropolitan Builders & Contractors Association of New Jersey in the Custom Single-Family Home Category ($1,000,000 - $2,000,000) The homeowners moved to Morris County, New Jersey to be closer to their grown children and their families. They found a mid-century style home on a beautiful tree-lined street less than a mile away from their children's homes. Although the location was ideal and the corner lot perfectly situated for the homeowners, it was in disrepair and did not offer them the space, design features and finishes they wanted. Spectrum Construction arranged for the original home to be deconstructed with any salvageable material sold to the public for reuse or re-purposing. The custom 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath home that Spectrum Construction designed and built in its place combines country charm with modern elegance. This new home incorporates many unique features including the “drive through” two-car garage that allows the homeowners access to the converging streets. The massive first-floor master bedroom suite consists of a marble surround fireplace, 2 sizeable walk-in-closets as well as his and her luxurious master bathrooms. Two home offices provide the homeowners with ample room to take care of business. An elevator was installed to enable the homeowners and aging guests to easily and safely access the second floor. Abundant storage areas throughout the home, including the cavernous full basement, offer plenty of space to stow extra belongings. The second story was designed with the homeowners’ grandchildren in mind. The additional bedrooms, playroom and upstairs den make room for both daytime visits and overnight stays. Space for entertaining adult guests was also considered. The first floor includes a spacious great room with floor to ceiling stone fireplace which opens to a covered, screened-in back porch with a second stone fireplace. The stylish kitchen, containing two counter seating areas and an eat-in nook, along with the formal dining room give the homeowners plenty of room to accommodate large gatherings.

Sewell Design was commissioned with the responsibility of undertaking the design of this residence for a young family who required a design that would cater for the living requirements of their family currently and for the future. Perched high on top of a hill within a rural setting, this two storey residence was designed to reflect the style of a modern country 'Queenslander' that was capable of encompassing all of the extensive rural landscape views on offer. Symmetrically balanced wall and window proportions, large articulated verandah areas and painted timber trims contribute to the style and detailing of the design. An octagonal 'rotunda' and 'turret' type roof extension of the verandah at the north east corner of the residence provides an outdoor entertaining area for the enjoyment of the extensive views on offer and provides direct sunlight access. A large family home consisting of 5 bedrooms each with walk in robe, guest bedroom with own ensuite, office, formal lounge, kitchen, dining and main living area, theatre room and rumpus room, this residence has all the space needed for the future needs of the occupants.

THE SETUP Sam’s client had lived in her downtown townhome home for less than a year when she decided to remodel the spacious second level. She found the kitchen’s functionality lacking and its presence overwhelming – it dominated the entire floor, regardless of where you stood. e were especially pleased to work with this lovely client again, having designed a kitchen for her previously. This new project consisted of two briefs to maximise the space and natural light for a bijoux annexe; Design a sleek contemporary open plan kitchen plus utility. Design bedroom storage and a home working space within the open plan area. To achieve the contemporary uncluttered style that would maximise the sense of light and space, a true handleless design was the obvious choice. The main run of cabinets in the kitchen and on the wardrobe doors are acrylic gloss with a ply edge. The light reflecting qualities of the gloss doors is further accentuated by the tropical green toughened glass panel behind the sink. We just love this injection of colour. It not only really suits this modern space but will look fabulous when the patio area is developed. Our customer is planning to create a beautiful green oasis with plants on the patio, which will just make this area feel so connected to the outside. The sink area is finished off perfectly with a black Quooker Fusion tap. The kitchen island offers a great contrast with the main run of furniture. The concrete effect handleless doors and Konigstone quartz ‘Concrete fossil’ worktop create a real feature, and provide some texture. Extending the worktop down over the sides of the island complements the seamless and uncluttered style of this kitchen perfectly. Not only does it look great, but its a practical space too. Built into the island is an evo port for sockets, enabling it to double up as a work and food prep area. For a final flourish, the glass shelves are all fitted with LED lights behind them, offering more ambient lighting options.

The previous kitchen had cherry cabinets, and even with a skylight and the extra daylight provided by the Nanawall, it appeared dark and slightly dated. The granite countertops were not their style and the rounded edge to the island cut into their living room. There was dead space in the kitchen outside of Joanne’s cycling room, that could have offered a small eating area, but the couple didn’t need it. The flooring had a hard transition between the kitchen and the unused space, and the color was darker than the Sam and Joanne preferred. The newly remodeled kitchen is light and bright with a white subway tile backsplash and new engineered flooring in the color Norwich. The couple chose Maple cabinets painted white from Omega Cabinetry in a Blair door style with concrete countertops – a unique choice for our clients. The contrasting island was painted in a Dusty Miller color and featured Beckington quartz countertops in a more traditional shape than the previous. New stainless-steel appliances were installed along with a white fireclay farmhouse sink for a clean, bright look. The previously unused space near Joanne’s bike room was reclaimed for additional pantry storage and a business center. A new window was installed above the desk area for more light. Finally, consistent wood floors were installed throughout offering a cohesive look, while the new Fir front door provided a gorgeous first impression.

This client wanted a relaxing bathroom that brought the ocean to Waterloo, Ontario. The wavy tile in the shower, and the glass teardrop accents in the niche and behind both his & her vanities showcase the movement and sheen of the water, and the soft blue and grey colour scheme allow a warm and cozy, yet fresh feeling overall. The hexagon marble tile on the shower floor was copied behind the soaker tub to define the space, and the furniture style cabinets from Casey’s Creative Kitchens offer an authentic classic look. The oil-rubbed finishes were carried throughout for consistency, and add a true luxury to the bathroom.
