This pantry cabinet is now a model of efficiency! We added labeled bins to group similar items, creating distinct zones for baking supplies, snacks, and canned goods. Clear jars were used for dry ingredients, and the lower shelves were optimized for bakeware. Functional, beautiful, and easy to maintain!

Our goal here was to offer our clients a full spa-like experience. From the unique aesthetic to the luxury finishes, this master bathroom now has a completely new look and function! For a true spa experience, we installed a shower steam, rain head shower fixture, and whirlpool tub. The bathtub platform actually extends into the shower, working as a bench for the clients to relax on while steaming! Convenient corner shelves optimize shower storage whereas a custom walnut shelf above the bath offers the perfect place to store dry towels. We continued the look of rich, organic walnut with a second wall-mounted shelf above the toilet and a large, semi-customized vanity, where the louvered doors accentuate the natural beauty of this material. The white brick accent wall, herringbone patterned flooring, and black hardware were introduced for texture and a trendy, timeless look that our clients will love for years to come. When Booth Hansen’s client obtained seven acres of virgin forest on St. Joseph Island in Ontario, Canada, to build a retreat home, they intended to be good stewards of the land. They desired a series of cabins that were organized along the shoreline of Lake Huron but also which treaded lightly on the site. The design solution incorporated three black zinc clad volumes situated parallel to the water, sited to follow the natural contours of the land, and oriented to accentuate views to the surrounding area. Their dark color allows the cabins to recede into the shoreline forest, thereby intentionally diminishing the presence of the structures when viewed from the water. The cabins utilize a raised pier foundation, respecting the site by maintaining the natural topography, allowing snow melt and rainwater to drain naturally into the lake. Passive house insulation strategies were employed to allow optimal performance of the thermal envelope. Windows are aligned with one another to promote cross ventilation through the cabins as well as to frame specific views of the exterior from the inside. Operable windows located near the peak of each gabled volume allow for natural stack effect to remove heat from the cathedral ceiling volumes as well as to allow diffuse light to enter. For thermal comfort, radiant floor heating was utilized and geothermal loops were installed into the bottom of the lake to sustainably heat and cool the home. Custom zinc clad operable shutters are recessed into the walls on a concealed track to secure the building and protect the windows when it is not in use, but recede from view and provide additional insulation to the walls when open. Programming for this 4,500-square-foot group of cabins includes 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, powder room, great room, study/library and garage. A central living cabin holds the living and dining spaces and opens onto a waterfront deck. Glass bridge connectors on either side reach to two sleeping cabins. The study comprises floor to ceiling book shelves and a view across the water to the distant lighthouse, a structure that recalls fond childhood memories for our client, a well-known fiction writer. Deeper In the woods, a 1500 sf 2 level detached garage surprises and delights by housing a private dance studio on the second floor for our client’s wife, a famous flamenco dancer. Four sides of glass allow dancing among the treetops along with a view back to the water. While our clients were intrigued by the austere black zinc cladding for the exterior, on the inside of the home, a more whimsical aesthetic was desired. The earthy interior palette was pulled directly from the surrounding landscape. Jade green cabinets emulate the pine trees, while chocolate toned wood flooring recalls the forest floor. Furniture and personal items further propagate the idea of natural moments of color in the woods.

Working with this couple for almost a decade has been so rewarding and fun! We recently updated their living area, master bath, guest bath and created a craft room in their former game room. The living area is classic and timeless, reflecting the homeowner's elevated level of taste, along with selective pops of color! The master bath exudes elegance with a spa-like soaking tub with sexy lines, a generous shower, and rich marbles in a unique rug pattern on the floor and backsplash. This timeless look will never get boring! The upstairs craft room was created for the optimal place for the homeowner to paint and create art with her grandchildren. The repurposed quarter-sawn wood top was hand selected and the table and cabinetry were custom designed and built to hold all of her essentials. Natural light from the sky light and windows keep this room always bright. The guest bath off of the craft area takes a twist on classic black and white, interpreted in a whimsical manner to keep things fun!

For this kitchen remodeling project, the homeowner was looking to make some much needed changes to the layout of the kitchen. We proposed a change that would optimize her storage capacity and the functionality of the cabinets. We suggested changing the pantry that was currently in the hallway and moving it to the kitchen. To do this, we removed the wall that divided the kitchen from the hallway. We also removed the existing desk that was in the kitchen and converted it into a coffee station with additional cabinets and a wine cooler. All the new cabinets were done in a Matte white color. To complete the new look, we installed a new quartz Calacatta Laza countertop, a glass tile backsplash, LED lights and a porcelain tile floor. Now this homeowner has the kitchen of their dreams.

D-14 Residence, Rohtak One of the significant characteristics of traditional Indian homes has been their connection to the outdoors, that is often mediated through spaces like the verandah. Located in Rohtak, Haryana, the design of the D-14 Residence illustrates an optimal use of the verandah in the contemporary Indian bungalow context and modern living. Occupying a corner plot in a township called the Suncity, the residence is designed for an elderly couple who loves spending time in nature. The clients aspired to have a house with excellent connectivity to the outside, and shaded landscaped sit-outs. The design intent hence focuses on creating outdoor seating and expansive openings to make the interiors feel open, bringing in natural light and ventilation. The house is planned in a manner that all the significant spaces open onto a verandah on the southwestern edge, bringing in maximum sunlight. The verandah overlooks a wide 15 feet green bed with lush landscaping; this design strategy enables an excellent mediation between the interior and exterior spaces, where the verandah acts as a buffer to curb the harsh sun and exposure to dust. On the ground floor, a spacious entrance lobby leads one to a double-height family lounge interconnected with the dining space, both of which open out onto the verandah through an extensive opening. Together they form a lively, interactive node in the house which becomes the central point of activity. The verandah, central to the house's layout, is also overlooked by the living room and the master bedroom. It is enclosed with 30ft wide M.S sliding gatesMS grill, ensuring all the doors in these rooms can stay open without worrying about security. The plan allows seamless movement and flow of interaction that is highly interconnected with the outdoors. A minimalist and artful staircase leads to the first floor of the house. Topped with grey Kharad stone and a railing made up of bent 12 mm dia Mild Steel rods, the staircase opens into another lounge for family seating, which overlooks the double-height lounge on the ground floor. The first floor further accommodates a study, a bedroom for visiting children and grandchildern and the servant's quarter creating an independent unit. An external spiral staircase at the rear end is provisioned as a separate access to the servant's quarters. Designed in locally-made exposed brick which were sourced from a brick kiln 50km from the site, the house evokes simplicity and rawness of character. Patterned brick jaalis enclose the balconies and open decks, lending a distinctive identity to the facade. Together with the warm grey Kota stone and the landscaped lawns, the house evokes a sense of an earthy and rustic charm. True to the identity of its inhabitants and surroundings, the D-14 Residence is a creative expression of its cultural and material context. With the verandah as the central planning feature, it is a contemporary reflection of traditional Indian homes and their inherent affinity for the outdoors.

The ground level houses office space for local non-profit groups and the upper floor is the new home of the Hazelwood branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. This project allowed the library to double the size of its space, providing a place to gather and come together. The renovation used the Passive House Retrofit Standard, focusing on a well-insulated building envelope with controlled ventilation, optimized passive solar heating, and energy efficiency. JURY COMMENTS: The project demonstrates the potential in creative planning by increasing the useable size of an existing building and reducing the environmental impact at the same time. Metrics matter and this building made a point of demonstrating what the metrics of its sustainable design yielded.
