Sean tackled his guest bathroom remodel to enhance the small space's functionality and appearance. The focus was on optimizing space utilization and refreshing the area with updated fixtures and finishes. The challenge of the tiny bathroom was addressed by carefully selecting space-efficient fixtures and finishes that enhanced functionality without sacrificing style. The remodel involved a complete demolition of the existing guest bathroom down to the studs, especially around the shower walls, to start fresh. A new walk-in shower replaced the dated shower tub combo. New shower drain plumbing was installed, along with the shower floor, which was tiled with Arizona Tile's Pave 2" x 2" mosaic in Moka and grouted in Driftwood. The shower walls were adorned with Arizona Tile's Tivoli in Bianco 12" x 24", creating a continuous offset pattern complemented by Warm Gray grout. A new recessed wall niche was added for bath products, matching the wall tile for a seamless look. In the vanity area, a space-efficient 42” Ove Decors Athena vanity in Almond Latte offered ample storage, paired with a Delta Kayra faucet in Brilliance Stainless, and a framed mirror and a medicine cabinet for extra storage. The guest bathroom transformation surpassed expectations, converting a tight space into a functional, stylish haven. The smart space utilization yielded a bathroom that caters to guests' needs while enhancing home value.

Our client purchased a disused lakefront residential plot on the border between Euclid and Willowick, Ohio. They asked Architecture Office to design a weekend retreat for them that emphasizes its striking view of Lake Erie. This two-story vacation home opens to a breezeway that provides cross-ventilation and airflow to the second floor’s kitchen and living area. On the ground floor, the master bedroom features an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet. A storage space that is accessible from the house’s exterior sits behind this closet. A second bedroom—intended for Airbnb guests—features an en suite bathroom, closet and separate entrance. A staircase ascends from the breezeway to a combined living area and kitchen. This open space is anchored by a twelve foot window that faces Lake Erie. The house is oriented perpendicular to Lake Erie to optimize views of the lake from the master and second bedrooms. We refurbished a previously existing deck on the property to incorporate it into the site. A gravel driveway leads to a space cleared to accommodate a garage at a future date. The house is clad in horizontal corrugated aluminum siding to provide a minimalist aesthetic. The cladding and a standing seam metal roof protects the house from frequent storms and high winds off the lake.

A cottage in The Hamptons dressed in classic black and white. The large open kitchen features an interesting combination of crisp whites, dark espressos, and black accents. We wanted to contrast traditional cottage design with a more modern aesthetic, including classsic shaker cabinets, wood plank kitchen island, and an apron sink. Contemporary lighting, artwork, and open display shelves add a touch of current trends while optimizing the overall function. We wanted the master bathroom to be chic and timeless, which the custom makeup vanity and uniquely designed Wetstyle tub effortlessly created. A large Merida area rug softens the high contrast color palette while complementing the espresso hardwood floors and Stone Source wall tiles.

To optimize storage space, Bakes & Kropp installed sleek floor-to-ceiling custom cabinets. Frameless overlay doors give the impression of inset drawers, and under-cabinet lighting adds an extra layer of functionality. Finished in Benjamin Moore’s ‘Decorator’s White,’ the cabinets balance rift-cut oak for a contemporary yet classic design with nickel accents and hardware for ornamental flair.

A spacious kitchen island now serves as the main focal point on the parlor level, while Caesarstone countertops, white slab cabinetry, a polished green backsplash, and stainless steel appliances contribute to the kitchen’s modern aesthetic. Two small windows at the rear of the home were replaced with a distinctive glass wall to maximize natural light and ventilation, while lending way to a brand-new steel deck and turf backyard to optimize outdoor space.

The 7,600 square-foot residence was designed for large, memorable gatherings of family and friends at the lake, as well as creating private spaces for smaller family gatherings. Keeping in dialogue with the surrounding site, a palette of natural materials and finishes was selected to provide a classic backdrop for all activities, bringing importance to the adjoining environment. In optimizing the views of the lake and developing a strategy to maximize natural ventilation, an ideal, open-concept living scheme was implemented. The kitchen, dining room, living room and screened porch are connected, allowing for the large family gatherings to take place inside, should the weather not cooperate. Two main level master suites remain private from the rest of the program; yet provide a complete sense of incorporation. The clients wanted to add a powder room to the main floor. We suggested integrating it in a pre-existing laundry room that was disorganized with a lot of wasted space. We designed the new space with chic bifold doors to close of the washer-dryer, optimised the storage to organise it, and added a gorgeous wall-mounted vanity and toilet. The grey subway tile is a classic choice and yet the whole space feels fresh, modern and on trend. This is now a cute multifunctional space. It is welcoming and very organized! This project was a tribute to the vision and optimism of the owners. This once-glorious home was so far gone that many people would have taken the easy path -tear it down and start over. Instead, the family hired Old Saratoga Restorations to save every original bit of material that could be salvaged and rebuild the home to its previous grandeur. OSR gutted the interior and reinvented it based on the archaeological evidence for this home restoration. They added a new kitchen and bathrooms with high-end fixtures, custom-cabinetry and top-of-the-line appliances. Outside, everything from the siding and trim to the dilapidated cupola on top needed to be replaced with duplicates.

The Stern Residence ‘Nautilus House’ is Michigan’s second USGBC LEED for Homes Platinum level certified whole house remodel. This ambitious project took a modest, unas- suming Cape Cod and completely transformed the home adding a new second floor and a dramatic curved roof above. The arced roof, besides being sculpturally striking, was intentionally designed to use the largest dimension of SIP panels manufactured, eliminating waste and maximizing utility, and provided an armature for mounting solar panels in the optimal location on the heavily wooded site. -James Haefner Photography
