Julian Hodges - Featured Project of the Month by Truitt & White
This month featured project brings you beautifully crafted gates and entryways from local craftsman Julian Hodges. For over 35 years, Mr. Hodges has been designing and crafting custom wooden gates in Berkeley and the greater Bay Area.
His projects mainly feature old growth, vertical grained redwood or western red cedar which is air or kiln dried. The gates are fully mortised and tenoned (male / female joints) and a very powerful epoxy is used to glue the parts together. Wherever a floating panel rides in a dado, drainage is provided in the form of several holes that are out of sight that allow any rain water to be ushered out at the bottom of the gate enabling the gate to dry itself rather than staying damp which otherwise could lead to long term decomposition of the wood.
Adding to the unique feel of each gate, Julian creates his own custom hardware from heavy gauge steel, which also provides a pleasing solid sound as it operates.
All gates are then finished in a penetrating oil seal which optimizes the longevity and good appearance of the gates.

This Magical Kitchen Remodel makes GoodFellas Construction seem more like magicians than a contracting company! From the marble countertops, to the sparkly backsplash - everything about this contemporary kitchen is jaw - dropping.

With a limited existing floor area in the kitchen, one of the main goals of the client from the initial schematic design phase was to maximize the open floor area while avoiding any addition or structural redesign. To partially accomplish this, a full-height storage cabinet is recessed into the wall eliminating any projection into the kitchen and creating circulation around the island. Stacked wall appliances optimize the kitchen’s utility while simplifying exhaust and electrical runs for a cleaner layout. Large under-mount workstation sinks provide extra prep space, doubling as a countertop or cutting board when not in use. The remodel also features new multi-sliding doors that bring in much more natural light and allow the clients to use the patio as an overflow flex space when hosting parties or events. The end result is a warm, open, and highly personalized kitchen that blends beauty with practicality.

Remodeling your master bathroom in Calabasas offers the perfect opportunity to optimize both functionality and style. Custom features, such as built-in cabinetry and spacious shower designs, can transform an ordinary bathroom into a highly organized, luxurious retreat. I recently worked with a homeowner in Calabasas who struggled with limited storage and a dated design. By integrating custom storage cabinets and a sleek walk-in shower, we were able to create a space that not only looked great but solved their storage woes. The built-in cabinetry, combined with the shower’s marble finishes, added much-needed storage for linens, toiletries, and more, all while maintaining a clean, open layout. The result was a bathroom that was both practical for daily use and aesthetically aligned with the homeowner’s vision.

When we first arrived on the scene this garden with a Northern orientation was gray and dank and full of algae. The goal was essentially to create the antithesis of that: a warm, fresh, lively and dynamic garden suited for a party, play and just hanging out and having fun. The challenge was to incorporate lots of functions into the small space. The patio was set in the back to get the most garden. The ledges on the raised beds offer extra seating during parties. By situating the play house on top of the shed (only accessible by the climbing wall), moving the access to the back alley into the shed and adding a diagonal to widen the space near the shed for play but keep the patio area intimate, the space was optimized as much as possible. The warm Terre Egypte color from Farrow & Ball that is painted on the bed and walls adds lots of warmth and freshness.

We worked closely with our client to replace a lakeside cottage and garage to better enable multi-generational access to lakeside living with design attention to improving the ecological presence, preserving the lake view from multiple rooms and optimizing space use for lakeside visitors.
The main house features three bedrooms, one full bathroom and laundry upstairs with a full kitchen, pantry and half bath on the main floor, and a fireplace for added warmth during chilly months. A three-season screened porch becomes part of the family room space in-season and is closed off by fully pocketed glass doors (14’ span) for the colder months. The wide-bay single car garage allows for plenty of room for winter storage of summer accessories while the second-floor features two bedrooms (that double as office and exercise space) and a full bath for visits from extended family.

This full property landscape design and build presented Pro-Land with the opportunity to creatively work with existing grades, while considering the restrictions of an abutting conservation authority. Keeping this in mind we were able to optimize the views of the greenery around the property, while creating a functional outdoor entertainment area.
The client wanted a classic design for the front; flagstone walkways to tie in with the colors from the house and an entry wall frames the front door. The goal in the backyard was to create various areas for entertaining, without sacrificing play spaces for their children – the size of the property made accommodating their wishes fairly easy. A sports court, pool with water feature, cabana, and outdoor kitchen ensure these homeowners don’t have to go far for their next vacation.

Narrow pantry which houses a Blum Space Tower. This maximises storage as each drawer can be pulled out individually and optimises the full depth of the pantry.

What does a roof deck look like when every part of the roof, even areas deemed uninhabitable and structurally weak, is utilized and optimized?
This large midcentury home on the edge of Presidio National Park in San Francisco had an incredible location and views. But the original roof deck suffered from poor design detailing that had rendered it a leaking, deteriorating mess. Even worse, the previous owner had covered three roof areas surrounding the deck with river stones, structurally overloading the building and endangering its occupants.
We removed the river stones and everything else down to the framing. An expertly detailed drainage and waterproofing system underlies everything above. The deck and access stairs are surfaced with durable and refined porcelain pavers. The guardrail is made from custom stainless steel supports with clear, low-iron, laminated glass spanning between for an unobstructed view. Heated seats make watching the chilly fog roll in through the gate comfy.
Planting and greenery surround the deck. The type varies depending on structural conditions- a deep planter sits on top of a structural wall, sedums in shallow soil occupy the strong edges of the surrounding rooftops, and faux grass turf fills out the middle in areas that can’t support the weight of wet soil.

This two-story modern farmhouse is ideal for a narrow lot with a modest width and a front entry garage. Inside, the floor plan is optimized with the master suite and an office downstairs and two bedrooms and an optional bonus room upstairs. The gourmet kitchen is a treat with an island and a sun tunnel overhead. Enjoy family togetherness with a spacious great room and dining area and a back porch for outdoor relaxation.

Limitations:
The photo you see above is an interior concept. Each time the project is created individually for your interior. Because your room may have a different size, and different location of walls, windows, and doors, you are aware that the final design may differ from the one shown above. At the same time, the climate and style of the interior as well as furniture and equipment will be preserved to the maximum extent, but it will never be 100% of what you see above.

One of the top factors that can influence the value of a property is the Master Bathroom. During the complete makeover on this project, we proceeded with the complete demolition of the existing master bathroom, including floors, vanity, plumbing, lighting fixtures, toitel and tub.
In collaboration with the prestigious designer, Roberto Lugo, the D9 team worked on the layout for the Master Bathroom. With the plan of optimizing the space, we gave ample room to the vanity and the shower to allow them to include all the requested features from the homeowner.
To create an inspiring and elegant atmosphere the combination of selected colors, textures and materials played a key role. The Master Bathroom was given elegance by the unique look of the gray toned Marble countertops, combined with the sophistication and detailed finish of the bathroom cabinets, and the neutral gray paint used to finish the raised-cabinets.
The shower enclosure presents a double shower with two Marble benches and four shower fixtures with hinged door.

Big updates in a small space! Even though this kitchen is small in size, this fresh update has optimized the space and completely transformed this kitchen!

This primary bathroom renovation focused on optimizing the space and creating a truly relaxing retreat. We began by completely gutting the existing bathroom and re-evaluating the floor plan to maximize functionality.
To infuse the space with personality, we incorporated a vibrant color palette, playful patterns, and unique finishes. The result is a spa-like oasis that perfectly reflects the client's vision and enhances their daily routine.

The extension and remodelling of this Grade II Listed manor house inspired some key architectural innovations including a bespoke, curved glass atrium which has discreetly enclosed the central courtyard and a glass staircase and landing to give additional access and improved circulation. The wholly glass staircase was the first to be installed in the UK.
Spanning the courtyard, the double-glazed, high tech glass roof creates a dramatic, contemporary feature within the building's historic core. The new space has created a large kitchen and dining room at the centre of the home that links up with the rest of the house. Natural light has been optimised and with the original walls in full view, there is an inside outside quality to the new internal space. Spratley & Partners managed the build on site and the interior design.
The brief also addressed the property's environmental credentials and included the addition of a ground source pump for heating and solar panels.

This custom temperature-controlled wine cellar in Chicago was designed to maximize storage while creating a refined architectural feature. The cellar features custom dark oak wine racks, label-forward bottle storage, and integrated LED lighting that highlights the collection while maintaining a warm, sophisticated atmosphere.
A metal-framed insulated glass door encloses the space, allowing the collection to be displayed while maintaining precise climate control. The layout was carefully designed to optimize bottle capacity while keeping the presentation clean and organized.
Designed and built by Luxury Elements, specialists in custom wine cellars, wine rooms, and wine storage solutions throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

This luxury modern kitchen remodel in West Palm Beach, FL was designed to deliver a bold, elegant, and highly functional space.
The project features high-gloss black flat panel cabinets that create a sleek, contemporary look, paired with a stunning waterfall quartz island with dramatic veining that becomes the centerpiece of the kitchen.
We optimized the layout to enhance workflow and storage while integrating modern appliances and clean lines throughout the design. The contrast between dark cabinetry and light quartz surfaces creates a sophisticated and visually striking environment.
The result is a high-end modern kitchen that combines luxury finishes, functionality, and a strong architectural presence, perfect for both everyday living and entertaining.
