The boy’s room utilizes many durable items. An upholstered bed, metal nightstand, and simple blue linen shade with blue trim create a masculine yet approachable atmosphere. This feel is complemented by the geometry of a light fixture from Restoration Hardware. On the wall, a unique wall covering by Peel & Stick gives the added texture of reclaimed and sustainable wood planking. Photo credit: David Duncan Livingston

The walls of of this master suite now resemble an old-world plaster with a crackled faux finish. The team also added ceiling beams, a chandellier and fireplace for romance. Two elegant chairs flock the fireplace, creating the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine before bed. Photo by Paul Kohlman

This bedroom and full bathroom are part of an adventuresome project my wife and I embarked upon to create a complete apartment in the basement of our townhouse. We designed a floor plan that creatively and efficiently used all of the 385-square-foot-space, without sacrificing beauty, comfort or function – and all without breaking the bank! To maximize our budget, we did the work ourselves and added everything from thrift store finds to DIY wall art to bring it all together. A partial double closet bar adds a little extra space while still leaving room for longer hanging clothes.

The light filled home office overlooks the sunny backyard and pool area. A mid century modern desk steals the spotlight.
