2013 NARI Capital CotY, Merit Award Winner, Creative Solutions under $15,000 Objective: This couple was tired of the old brick look of their family room and its embedded fireplace. They wanted to uplift the entire room, with better lighting, updated built ins and new gas log fireplace. Challenges: It was not an easy task to get rid of all masonry and brick wall. Gas lines and powder line were quite distance away and the family room floor was a concrete slab. Design solutions: It was important for the couple to create an optional separation between the family room and the kitchen for times that she is having her book club gang over and husband wanted to watch his sporting events. Part of the wall between kitchen and family room was taken by a closet. We have removed that entire wall and implemented a 6” wide Barn door for a partial solution to their problem. New wiring for light and cable wires were running into the old masonry wall. Gas line gave the old wood burning fireplace and new life. Custom built in cabinetry was placed in place old masonry wall. A new stone hearth and surround wrapped around the new fireplace. New hardwood wide plank flooring gave this family room warmth. New recess lighting has offered a much brighter room. Outcome: He gets to enjoy his favorite football team beat up the rebels while she gets to have her tea party around the kitchen table. And in all other occasions they get to cuddle by the flames of a new fireplace.

A special LEICHT Westchester | Greenwich project. Located in Chappaqua, Westchester County, NY. this beautiful project was done in two phases, guest house first and then the main house. In the main house, we did the kitchen and butler pantry, living area and bar, laundry room; master bathroom and master closet, three bathrooms. In the guest house, we did the kitchen and bar; laundry; guest bath and master bath. All LEICHT. Our homeowner had worked with us in the past and asked us to design and renovate their 1980’s style master bathroom and closet into a modern oasis with a more functional layout. The original layout was chopped up and an inefficient use of space. Keeping the windows where they were, we simply swapped the vanity and the tub, and created an enclosed stool room. The shower was redesigned utilizing a gorgeous tile accent wall which was also utilized on the tub wall of the bathroom. A beautiful free-standing tub with modern tub filler were used to modernize the space and added a stunning focal point in the room. Two custom tall medicine cabinets were built to match the vanity and the closet cabinets for additional storage in the space with glass doors. The closet space was designed to match the bathroom cabinetry and provide closed storage without feeling narrow or enclosed. The outcome is a striking modern master suite that is not only functional but captures our homeowners’ great style.

What a fun project and what a beautiful home! This young growing family wanted high quality new cabinets throughout their new-build in Hinkley, MN. They had six spaces in the home that needed cabinetry and enlisted us here at The Cabinet Store to help! Not only did we help them with the design (much of it done efficiently long distance), but we were able to install all six rooms in one day! The homeowners wanted a transitional interior style for their home, a mix of modern and traditional. They wanted the overall look to be clean, contemporary, and warm. A mix of wood and painted cabinetry was the perfect fit to give off this polished, but cozy feel throughout the home. Selecting Showplace Wood’s Breckenridge door style throughout the whole home, and alternating the color tones (Soft Cream with Walnut glaze for some rooms and Cherry wood stained Coffee in other rooms), they got just what they wanted. Plus we custom made matching pieces for various rooms in our very own custom cabinetry shop to match the Showplace cabinets! This week we’re going to feature photos of the kitchen cabinetry & the living room shelving / entertainment center. See the fabulous outcome below! The kitchen features a fun mix of the cream color cabinets on the top and bottom of the outer edges and the coffee toned ones on the island. And the entertainment center / shelving shown in the living room was custom made here at The Cabinet Store to match the cabinets of the kitchen island. Practical and beautiful!

Our clients wanted to increase the size of their kitchen, which was small, in comparison to the overall size of the home. They wanted a more open livable space for the family to be able to hang out downstairs. They wanted to remove the walls downstairs in the front formal living and den making them a new large den/entering room. They also wanted to remove the powder and laundry room from the center of the kitchen, giving them more functional space in the kitchen that was completely opened up to their den. The addition was planned to be one story with a bedroom/game room (flex space), laundry room, bathroom (to serve as the on-suite to the bedroom and pool bath), and storage closet. They also wanted a larger sliding door leading out to the pool. We demoed the entire kitchen, including the laundry room and powder bath that were in the center! The wall between the den and formal living was removed, completely opening up that space to the entry of the house. A small space was separated out from the main den area, creating a flex space for them to become a home office, sitting area, or reading nook. A beautiful fireplace was added, surrounded with slate ledger, flanked with built-in bookcases creating a focal point to the den. Behind this main open living area, is the addition. When the addition is not being utilized as a guest room, it serves as a game room for their two young boys. There is a large closet in there great for toys or additional storage. A full bath was added, which is connected to the bedroom, but also opens to the hallway so that it can be used for the pool bath. The new laundry room is a dream come true! Not only does it have room for cabinets, but it also has space for a much-needed extra refrigerator. There is also a closet inside the laundry room for additional storage. This first-floor addition has greatly enhanced the functionality of this family’s daily lives. Previously, there was essentially only one small space for them to hang out downstairs, making it impossible for more than one conversation to be had. Now, the kids can be playing air hockey, video games, or roughhousing in the game room, while the adults can be enjoying TV in the den or cooking in the kitchen, without interruption! While living through a remodel might not be easy, the outcome definitely outweighs the struggles throughout the process.

Updated the old shower with a new custom ceramic tile shower, all new fixtures, glass door, and tile floor in the lavatory. {Featured Story} Spring, 2015 – This condo was purchased from the estate of the new owner’s parents and refurbished with trendy new touches. There were no close comparables in the Farmington neighborhood with within walking distance to the urban downtown area, so the approach for selling was to create an entirely new set of comparables when the new owner was found. On the market for just days, the renovation, marketing and finishing touches made this a highly sought after, and quick to sell property at top dollar, establishing a new trend in the neighborhood. {Our Process for this Featured Property}: Assessed the initial investment condo, offered suggestions for rehab and renovation. Assisted with Color Theory through color selection and process (no beige in this condo!). Helped select floor and counter materials, tile selection and features in the kitchen and bath. Final staging of the property was done with antiques and housewares, and created a cozy and lived in feel. As a final touch, a party was thrown when the property was completed to invite in friends and family, as well as an open house with freshly baking chocolate chip cookies to make the prospective buyers feel right at home! {Outcome} This property sold in days as a cash sale, at a higher price than anything in the neighborhood – and closed quickly. Both the seller and buyer were thrilled with this transaction!

Architect: Andre Tchelistcheff Architects New York. NY Builder: Xhema of Greenwich CT Installer: TRM Enterprises Bridgehampton NY Back story. Northern has worked with both Xhema and TRM many tiles. We have worked with Andre before he branched out on his own. Originally Xhema’s contact was to replace the roof and repair the garage, which as some point had been made into an indoor swimming pool without adequate ventilation. The budget was about $8m and there were 20 drawings. By the time the job was 6 months old the scope of work has expanded to over $30m and over 200 drawings had been produced. Northern was contacted to visit the site and evaluate the existing roof. Although the house had been added to over the years the same tile was used but due to the location of the house the color of the tile varied considerably from the front to the back. Northern identified a large number of custom details which would require us to: 1) Match the existing Field tile in size, thickness (it was actually thicker at the butt and reduced to ½” where the tile is overlapped) , surface texture and the color. 2) Make tiles that are curved in their length to suit the curved rafter on the gabled dormers. 3) Make the curved tiles to suit the low slope octagonal tower. 4) Make the curved tiles and Arris style hips to suit the hipped dormers with the curved rafters. 5) Make the segmented tiles to suit the round turret. 6) Make the custom arris style hip tiles for the octagonal tower. 7) Make the custom Arris style hip to suit the different roof pitches as well as the varying splays at the eaves. 8) Make the custom pieces to suit the swept valleys Simon broke down each section of the roof. He indented all items for each section and agreed the measure etc with the installers. This ‘Project Bible’ became an invaluable tool for the installer, our tile makers and us. We shipped some samples from the original roof to Sahtas who replicated tall the details. I was visiting factory and delayed my return to the Saturday so that the tiles coming out of the kiln late Friday night could be wrapped and packed into newly purchase suit cases. I arrived home late Saturday evening and Simon picked me up Sunday afternoon and drove us down to Greenwich for an 8 am meeting with the clients. When we unpacked the tiles they were still warm and Hilfiger signed off on the color, although his wife suggested we make them a bit darker a ‘as he has a dreadful sense of color!’ We took Vincent Liot, owner of TRM to the factory twice so that he could oversee the prototyping of all the myriad custom pieces. This was an invaluable move as he pre-approved all the pieces before they were shipped. The installation was completed and everyone was very pleased with the final outcome. The Hilfiger’s estate manager told me that a group of friends who were staying the weekend after all the work was completed were heard to ask Mr. Hilfiger ‘I thought you were having a new roof’…to which he responded ‘we did but you can’t tell, which as the plan” …perfect! In refection this is probably the most complicated roof Northern has ever had the pleasure to supply. We learned a lot of very valuable lessons but in future when we are asked how did we do it we will answer ‘that is for us to know and for you to pay for!’

This exterior renovation aimed to revitalize a charming 1960s Southern colonial-style brick home while preserving its timeless appeal. The skilled design team at Revolve embraced the client's vision of a "Transitional Contemporary" style, skillfully blending classic and modern elements to create a truly unique outcome. Revolve updated the home’s curved features, such as the classical columns and rounded bay windows, to achieve this beautiful transformation. They incorporated sleek lines and contemporary materials that exude sophistication. The removal of shutters and the enlargement of existing windows with modern frames and thermal glass enhanced the home’s visual appeal, increased interior natural light, and improved energy efficiency, contributing to the overall well-being of the homeowners. Gone are the days of painted-shut windows; the new windows now open smoothly, bringing a refreshing change! In keeping with the original design of the house, Revolve maintained the existing second-floor porch along the front, eliminating the picket railing and traditional molding. These elements were replaced with square columns and a minimalist custom horizontal metal railing system. Additionally, the team thoughtfully enhanced the continuous masonry façade by removing sections of brick and replacing them with a contemporary wood rainscreen. This adjustment added depth to what was previously a flat elevation and tied together areas of the house that were re-clad from vinyl siding to wood plank. The design team also redefined the geometry of the multiple rooflines and third-floor dormers to create a cohesive overall design. Carefully selected paint and stain colors added warmth and dimension to the updated exterior. Modern elements were introduced into the outdoor space, resulting in a cozy outdoor living area complete with a gas-powered fireplace and a large-screen TV—perfect for enjoying Ravens games with friends and family.

This Primary bathroom needed an update to be a forever space, with clean lines, and a timeless look. Now my clients can simply walk into the shower space, for easy access, easy maintenance, and plenty of room. An American Standard step in tub is opposite the shower, which was on their wish list. The outcome is a lovely, relaxing space that they will enjoy for years to come. We decided to mix brushed gold finishes with matte black fixtures. The geometric Herringbone and Hex porcelain tile selections add interest to the overall design.

This project is a case study of a client living in Orlando, USA. In an 80-square-meter room, the client has a combined living room and dining area layout. The overall style of the house leans towards a modern Japanese-inspired natural wood aesthetic. The client's requirement was to find the perfect pendant light for the dining area, ensuring ample illumination while seamlessly blending with the room's style. We recommended this pumpkin pendant light to her, with its 35cm radiating light source capable of illuminating the entire dining area. Once the product was received and installed, the client expressed great satisfaction with the outcome.
