Inspiration for a transitional living room remodel in Seattle

This kitchen was part of an addition/renovation of the entire home. High on the client’s priorities list was countertop seating, a large island, two sink areas, a desk area and lots of countertop space. We had significant input to the window placement to take advantage of natural light and views. The refrigerator is strategically placed so that it can simultaneously support the chef’s area from that of all other kitchen occupants. This creates various work stations in the kitchen and prevents any one space from getting overloaded by multiple users. The large space allowed for the opportunity to define the various work spaces and cabinetry with different wood species and paint colors. The open shelves above the windows add a strong horizontal balance to the vertical pantry and refrigerator cabinets. Upon entering this home from the front door one of the first things you see is this oversized carved wood door which conceals a wine refrigerator and dry wine rack and humidor. The backside of the door was finished in chalkboard paint and cork. The mixture of flooring materials and the iron vine staircase was existing to the home and we simply augmented these artistic aspects to create a cohesive space.

Beth Welsh of Interior Changes helped this homeowner keep the "good interior finishes" like this full wood ceiling and beam structure, and the stained wood windows ~ while making enough alterations to bring this A frame up to date. By painting out the base and casings as well as some of the cabinetry, re-staining the floors and furnishing in a casual style~ the golden oak overload disappeared!
