An Arts & Crafts Bungalow is one of my favorite styles of homes. We have quite a few of them in our Stockton Mid-Town area. And when C&L called us to help them remodel their 1923 American Bungalow, I was beyond thrilled. As per usual, when we get a new inquiry, we quickly Google the project location while we are talking to you on the phone. My excitement escalated when I saw the Google Earth Image of the sweet Sage Green bungalow in Mid-Town Stockton. "Yes, we would be interested in working with you," I said trying to keep my cool. But what made it even better was meeting C&L and touring their home, because they are the nicest young couple, eager to make their home period perfect. Unfortunately, it had been slightly molested by some bad house-flippers, and we needed to bring the bathroom back to it "roots." We knew we had to banish the hideous brown tile and cheap vanity quickly. But C&L complained about the condensation problems and the constant fight with mold. This immediately told me that improper remodeling had occurred and we needed to remedy that right away. The Before: Frustrations with a Botched Remodel The bathroom needed to be brought back to period appropriate design with all the functionality of a modern bathroom. We thought of things like marble countertop, white mosaic floor tiles, white subway tile, board and batten molding, and of course a fabulous wallpaper. This small (and only) bathroom on a tight budget required a little bit of design sleuthing to figure out how we could get the proper look and feel. Our goal was to determine where to splurge and where to economize and how to complete the remodel as quickly as possible because C&L would have to move out while construction was going on. The Process: Hard Work to Remedy Design and Function During our initial design study, (which included 2 hours in the owners’ home), we noticed framed images of William Morris Arts and Crafts textile patterns and knew this would be our design inspiration. We presented C&L with three options and they quickly selected the Pimpernel Design Concept. We had originally selected the Black and Olive colors with a black vanity, mirror, and black and white floor tile. C&L liked it but weren’t quite sure about the black, We went back to the drawing board and decided the William & Co Pimpernel Wallpaper in Bayleaf and Manilla color with a softer gray painted vanity and mirror and white floor tile was more to their liking. After the Design Concept was approved, we went to work securing the building permit, procuring all the elements, and scheduling our trusted tradesmen to perform the work. We did uncover some shoddy work by the flippers such as live electrical wires hidden behind the wall, plumbing venting cut-off and buried in the walls (hence the constant dampness), the tub barely balancing on two fence boards across the floor joist, and no insulation on the exterior wall. All of the previous blunders were fixed and the bathroom put back to its previous glory. We could feel the house thanking us for making it pretty again. The After Reveal: Cohesive Design Decisions We selected a simple white subway tile for the tub/shower. This is always classic and in keeping with the style of the house. We selected a pre-fab vanity and mirror, but they look rich with the quartz countertop. There is much more storage in this small vanity than you would think. The Transformation: A Period Perfect Refresh We began the remodel just as the pandemic reared and stay-in-place orders went into effect. As C&L were already moved out and living with relatives, we got the go-ahead from city officials to get the work done (after all, how can you shelter in place without a bathroom?). All our tradesmen were scheduled to work so that only one crew was on the job site at a time. We stayed on the original schedule with only a one week delay. The end result is the sweetest little bathroom I've ever seen (and I can't wait to start work on C&L's kitchen next). Thank you for joining me in this project transformation. The 2021 Southern Living Idea House is inspiring on multiple levels—from the stunning location in Louisville, Kentucky overlooking the Ohio river, to the design-driven home that marries European countryside vibes with a timeless aesthetic. Dubbed the “forever home,” the concept was to design for all stages of life, with thoughtful spaces that meet the ever-evolving needs of families today. The 5,545-square-foot, Colonial Greek Revival Cottage-style home is located in The Breakers at Prospect community and is the collective effort of many. While it may have formerly been a trend to embrace open layout living spaces, following the pandemic families are seeking spaces in the home that feel separated, to allow for privacy. Rooms with clear intentions allow more options for areas in which to spend time, depending on your mood, and this home perfectly balances livable and lively ideas. Marvin products were chosen for this project to maximize the use of natural light, allow airflow from outdoors to indoors, and provide expansive views that overlook the Ohio River. This is a super modern townhome with original pale tones, mainly a white canvas. Our sophisticated and well-traveled out-of-town clients purchased this townhome right in the middle of the pandemic. They needed a full-cycle interior design studio like ours to take on this project while they were in transit to Montecito. The scope was the complete renovation and facelift of the kitchen, powder room, master bedroom, master bathroom, guest suites, basement, and outdoor areas. Our clients wanted to bring warm tones such as orange and red throughout the 4-story Montecito townhome. They were open to discovering and implementing different interior design ideas in each section of the house. This project also features our SORELLA furniture pieces made exclusively by hand in Portugal and shipped to our clients in Montecito. Now, a daily dose of sunlight enhances the light taupe wall paint and the custom linen draperies speak to the tailored, yet approachable vibe. A soapstone table grounds the space and the reeded sideboard's smokey wood and marble top oozes luxury. The ceiling takes center stage with an ocelot print “hand-painted” wallpaper under the gilded glow of an olive leaf light.

This young couple moved early in the pandemic lockdown. They tasked TDC with turning an extra bedroom into an office, updating a kids' bedroom, and finishing their formal living room. It was a joy to mix formal elements with fresh bright colors - creating happy spaces that function for a growing family but will last for the duration of their legacy home. Here in the kid's room we reused a rug and brought in other colorful elements that work to liven the space. Bright orange pillows coupled with a floor lamp and curtain trim work with the ottoman shag textures.

The back yard patio is the new living room. Let’s discuss. If you’ve tried to purchase an outdoor, propane heater, new grill, or even outdoor seating in the past six months, this is not news to you. We’re all doing our best to manage through the pandemic while still enjoying social connections and time with family and friends. The solution that so many of us have adopted is to spend more time outside. There’s a Norwegian saying that says, “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.” It’s a mantra worth adopting these days. We have a lot of customers who are ready to bundle up and enjoy their back yards as much as they enjoy their living rooms. But these lucky homeowners have had that opportunity for the past six months. When this customer first came to Valet, their garage cabinets were old, falling apart, and not providing the functional storage that they needed to create a multi-purpose space. The clients were looking for cabinetry to fit around the safe, refrigerator, gym equipment and bikes, provide plenty of bulk storage, as well as tool, sports equipment, and overflow pantry storage. With the pandemic causing gyms to shut down throughout California, many clients have been requesting help incorporating home gyms into their garage spaces. Hafele’s Omni-Track slatwall system provides space and hooks for sporting equipment and accessories, while Stylite acrylic mirrored doors provide a whole wall of mirrors to ensure they’re getting their posture right. The workbench is custom created to fit around the window, with a secondary bench cabinet to hold their own toolbox closer to arms reach, with space above for additional Omni-Track. The client worked with their own contractor to insulate and drywall as well as add epoxy flooring. This cabinetry came out beautiful and functional at $12,200.

We are honored to work on many homes that are over 100 years old, and this classic center hall colonial home was no different. It was built in 1921 and is located on a beautiful corner lot in the heart of Rockville Centre, NY. Our goal was to pay respect to the stately architectural details throughout the house, while creating a vibrant and colorful home that was well suited for family living. We focused on modernizing, updating, and furnishing this beautiful space for our clients, a young family of four, who moved out of the city during the pandemic and purchased their forever home. We incorporated bold wallpaper, a rich color palette, and custom furniture that expertly fit their home and captured our clients spirit.
