We were invited to participate in the 2019 Miami Designer Showhouse for Miami Life magazine. Our team designed the master suite including the master bedroom, bathroom, and connecting hallway. We gave both spaces a bohemian, natural, and sophisticated feel. The focal point of the master bedroom is the 6ft mirror hung on the wall next to the bed. It is a breathtaking design feature, and it makes the room feel larger. To make sure that the room feels completely bespoke, we worked with a local wood fabricator to make an accent wall out of angled wood pieces that were painted the same color as the surrounding room. This accent wall is right at the entrance to the master suite, so it sets the tone for a unique and gorgeous space. At 2,200 sf, this single-family home marries traditional craftsman style with modern energy efficiency and design. A Built Green Level 5, the home features an extremely efficient Heat Return Ventilation system, amazing indoor air quality, thermal solar hot water, solar panels, hydronic radiant in-floor heat, warm wood interior detailing, timeless built-in cabinetry, tastefully placed wood coffered ceilings, and expansive views of Commencement Bay and Mt. Bellweather's managing partner, William Giesey, has over 20 years of experience providing construction management and design services for high-quality home renovations in Philadelphia and its Main Line suburbs. Will is a BPI-certified building analyst, NARI-certified kitchen and bath remodeler, and active member of his local NARI chapter. He is the acting chairman of a local historical commission and has participated in award-winning restoration and historic preservation projects. A 43” diameter heritage pecan guided the plan of this neighborhood-scaled, modestly-priced, single-story, L-shaped house. In Austin’s seemingly perpetual drought, the goal was to create a symbiotic relationship between house and tree: to complement, not combat each other. The roof’s east/west parallel ridges create a valley directly across from the base, where water is collected at a grate, nourishing the tree. The roof also maximizes south facing surfaces, elevated at 15 degrees for future solar collection. The open, public spaces of the home maximize the north-south light. The private zone of the bedrooms and bathrooms include a generous gallery; its angled walls and large sliding doors are faceted about the tree. The pecan becomes a central focus for indoor and outdoor living, participating in the house in both plan and section. The design welcomes and nurtures the tree as integral to its success. The basement provides adequate natural light, but walling off areas would have eliminated that lighting benefit for certain rooms. Our ‘divided yet open’ solution creates cohesiveness in the space. and still promotes a sense of inclusiveness for all of the participants.

A stunning design worthy of a tour. Our clients wanted to extend the indoor living to the outdoors, using materials that aren’t everyday or ordinary. The D. A. Dunlevy team designed a plan that integrates form and function—and is nothing less than extraordinary. Four distinct spaces were built using different materials–granite cobblestones for the parking area, Terra travertine for walkways and terraces, and Lake George Ashler stone for walls and steps. The overall effect creates separation and cohesion and invites exploration. The outdoor rooms include a large sitting area, a dining space, and a tranquil lounge. Along with the boxwoods and pine tree, new plantings were added to create a consistent feel of luxurious greenery. The sitting area hosts a custom water feature that creates a gentle, soothing cascade. The final design is elegant, functional, and a breathtaking series of spaces that earned high praise from the owners and the Georgetown Garden Tour participants.

Inspiration for a craftsman exterior home remodel in DC Metro

The kitchen was enlarged by capturing space in in the family room, and removing a dividing wall which allowed for an open plan and more efficient layout.. Painting the ceiling and wrapping the beams provided a lighter more finished feeling and with addition of more lights made the kitchen more user friendly not matter what time of the day or night. The countertop seating at the end of the kitchen is the perfect place to gather for a family meal and the seating at the other end is perfect for guests to sit and interact with the cook and to participate in the food prep. or the kids to sit and do homework. This kitchen has something for everyone, a place for everything, and will be enjoyed by the entire family for years to come!

Opening these spaces required complex structural engineering. The wall removals required supporting the loads from the second floor and meeting the engineering requirements for shear wall and lateral support. These beams and their connections to the posts they sit on were a challenge to install because of the complex nature of the home's original framed. All these loads had to be carried through the finished basement below and rest on new footings below the basement floor. The center kitchen island was expansive, with a single slab countertop that would provide both workspace and counter seating. This slab, at 64x120 and 789 lbs., required careful planning for on-site labor, transfer routing, and precision installation. Natural daylight now floods the space from all directions. Recessed can lighting runs throughout the space, all on dimmers for maximum control of ambiance. The Better Builders design team guided the selection of hardwoods, staircase details, cabinetry, countertops, tile, and color. The muted palette and clean lines work well with our couple’s eclectic furnishings and artworks. Now, traffic and activities flow better, and every inch of the previously divided space is utilized and enjoyed. The outcome is exactly as our homeowners envisioned…and as we intended.

The objective was to renovate the kitchen in order to create more space for a family that enjoys spending quality time in this area. The homeowners were seeking a design that would allow them to actively participate in conversations while tending to their tasks behind the kitchen island. One member of the family enjoys cooking, while the other has a passion for baking. The challenge was to create a space where everyone could work together, engage in social interactions, and maintain a clutter-free and minimalist kitchen environment. The requirements included ample storage, a display area for their cherished China collection acquired during their years of world travel, easy cleaning and low maintenance features, as well as practicality. To meet the clients' needs, it was necessary to reconfigure the existing layout. Removing the old butler's pantry opened up the space considerably. The use of pocket doors allowed for the kitchen to function with distinct working stations, while still maintaining an open plan. This design enables the family to cook and engage with each other simultaneously. The incorporation of two islands provides ample countertop space and various work zones, ensuring that there is enough room for everyone to work comfortably. Careful material selection was made to ensure minimal maintenance and easy cleaning, while still imparting a luxurious and elegant ambiance. The addition of LED lighting details not only sets the mood but also adds an impressive element to this sophisticated and practical kitchen. The end result is a spacious, practical, clean, and low-maintenance kitchen. There is an abundance of storage, and the design ensures that everyone can coexist harmoniously. In summary, this kitchen renovation successfully combines luxury, practicality, and comfort into one cohesive space.
