Our design strategy was to hold space and create immediate impact while reducing maintenance needs as the landscape matured. Into this base, we planted evergreen basal foliage, long bloomers and early spring/late fall color to create an immersive all-season groundcover that will slowly intermingle. Annually, this low mow is cut no lower than 4” (thereby safeguarding habitat) while the tidily trimmed perimeter utilizes remnant turf grass as visible cues to care. Dissecting the rectilinear green space, permeable hardscaping offers a gently curved path towards the front entryway; an invitation to pause and observe the landscape’s diverse textures and activity up close. Within which, a legacy planting of new specimen trees. A serene garden pathway, artfully designed to lead visitors through a living tapestry of vibrant roses, lush greenery, and graceful architectural elements. The winding gravel path serves as the garden’s gentle spine, curving naturally to draw the eye through the scene while softening the formality of the structured plantings. To the left, an array of heirloom roses bloom in delicate shades of ivory, blush pink, and rich crimson, their blossoms elegantly framed by subtle wire fencing for protection without obstruction. Each bush was intentionally placed to create a symphony of color, texture, and scent — a timeless nod to the romance of classic European gardens. On the right, well-manicured boxwood hedges anchor the space, offering structure and continuity. The vibrant purple blooms of salvia provide contrast, infusing movement and a touch of the wild into the refined landscape. At the far end, a solitary deciduous tree rises gracefully against a lush green backdrop of climbing vines, serving as a natural focal point that punctuates the garden’s rhythm. The design concept was to marry formality with natural beauty — an intimate garden space that invites exploration while maintaining a sense of peaceful order. The interplay between the structured hardscape, the abundant plantings, and the sweeping coastal views creates a garden that feels timeless, inviting visitors to pause, breathe, and be present in its quiet elegance.

The 5,000 square foot private residence is located in the community of Horseshoe Bay, above the shores of Lake LBJ, and responds to the Texas Hill Country vernacular prescribed by the community: shallow metal roofs, regional materials, sensitive scale massing and water-wise landscaping. The house opens to the scenic north and north-west views and fractures and shifts in order to keep significant oak, mesquite, elm, cedar and persimmon trees, in the process creating lush private patios and limestone terraces. The Owners desired an accessible residence built for flexibility as they age. This led to a single level home, and the challenge to nestle the step-less house into the sloping landscape. Full height glazing opens the house to the very beautiful arid landscape, while porches and overhangs protect interior spaces from the harsh Texas sun. Expansive walls of industrial insulated glazing panels allow soft modulated light to penetrate the interior while providing visual privacy. An integral lap pool with adjacent low fenestration reflects dappled light deep into the house. Chaste stained concrete floors and blackened steel focal elements contrast with islands of mesquite flooring, cherry casework and fir ceilings. Selective areas of exposed limestone walls, some incorporating salvaged timber lintels, and cor-ten steel components further the contrast within the uncomplicated framework. The Owner’s object and art collection is incorporated into the residence’s sequence of connecting galleries creating a choreography of passage that alternates between the lucid expression of simple ranch house architecture and the rich accumulation of their heritage. The space demonstrates how classical detailing can be paired with expressive colour, layered textiles, and contemporary lighting to create a bedroom that feels both elegant and personal. The architecture establishes a calm, cohesive backdrop. Crisp white wall panelling, substantial crown moulding, and a carefully detailed recessed ceiling create a sense of proportion and permanence. Rather than competing with the furnishings, these architectural elements provide a restrained framework that allows texture, colour, and light to become the defining layers. A custom fireplace creates an architectural focal point within the bedroom. Its clean, linear treatment is deliberately understated, allowing the fire itself to introduce warmth and atmosphere without overwhelming the room. The fireplace also visually connects the bedroom to the adjoining sitting area, creating a sense of continuity across the suite. The recessed ceiling is an important design feature. Layered moulding frames the central ceiling plane, while concealed perimeter lighting creates a soft architectural glow. This indirect illumination gives the room a warmer evening character and highlights the geometry of the ceiling without relying solely on decorative fixtures. The upholstered bed provides a substantial yet comfortable centrepiece. Its tall, softly rounded headboard introduces a tactile quality against the crisp architectural envelope, while the layered bedding and collection of jewel-toned cushions bring personality into the otherwise neutral setting. Colour is used selectively but confidently. Deep fuchsia, sapphire blue, plum, and charcoal accents create a sophisticated jewel-tone palette that contrasts with the white architecture and pale textiles. The combination of wood, upholstered surfaces, reflective accents, architectural millwork, and soft lighting creates a carefully balanced sensory experience. Overall, the design is an expression of refined residential luxury with a more personal and intimate character. Classical millwork establishes timelessness, while jewel-toned textiles, sculptural furnishings, contemporary lighting, and curated artwork prevent the room from feeling overly traditional. The result is a sophisticated primary suite designed for comfort, privacy, and understated glamour.

Each of the main houses three bedrooms, and all of the entertaining spaces, have large rear facing windows with thick craftsman style casing. A glance at the front motor court reveals a guesthouse above a three-stall garage. Complete with separate entrance, the guesthouse features its own bathroom, kitchen, laundry, living room and bedroom. The columned entry porch of the main house is centered on the floor plan, but is tucked under the left side of the homes large transverse gable. Centered under this gable is a grand staircase connecting the foyer to the lower level corridor. Directly to the rear of the foyer is the living room. With tall windows and a vaulted ceiling. The living rooms stone fireplace has flanking cabinets that anchor an axis that runs through the living and dinning room, ending at the side patio. A large island anchors the open concept kitchen and dining space. On the opposite side of the main level is a private master suite, complete with spacious dressing room and double vanity master bathroom. Buffering the living room from the master bedroom, with a large built-in feature wall, is a private study. Downstairs, rooms are organized off of a linear corridor with one end being terminated by a shared bathroom for the two lower bedrooms and large entertainment spaces.
