One can say that the redesign job on this Atlanta-area home was just what the doctor ordered, since physician Jim Linnane chose Cantoni designer Kohl Sudnikovich to help him re-imagine his 50s ranch-style residence. Online browsing, and a fondness for modern design, led the medical professional into our Georgia store/" title="Cantoni Modern Furniture Stores" class="crosslinking">showroom after purchasing the 50s-built home in early 2011. Since then, walls were torn down, the kitchen got a facelift, a lone loft morphed in to a music room, and the fireplace got haute while the pool became cool. As always, step one of the design process began with Kohl visiting the home to measure and scale-out floor plans. Next, ideas were tossed around and the client fell in love with the Mondrian sectional, in red. “Jim’s selection set the color scheme for the home’s living areas,” explains Kohl, “and he loves the punchy accents we added with art, both inside and out.” “Kohl worked closely with me, from start to finish, and guided me through the entire process,” explains Jim. “He helped me find a great contractor, and I’m particularly fond of the plan he conceived to replace the dated fireplace with a more contemporary linear gas box set in striated limestone.” Adds Kohl, “I love how we opened the loft and staircase walls by replacing them with metal and cable railings, and how we created a sitting area (in what was the dining room) to open to the living room we enhanced with mirrors.” A creative fix, like re-facing the cabinets, drawers and door panels in the kitchen, illustrates how something simple (and not too pricey) can make a big impact. This is a remodel that sits on a flag lot. Flag lots are only attached to the street by the means of a long driveway. In this particular case, this home’s driveway is a 20 foot long stretch from their 100 foot long property, and once you go past that flag, then the property opens up. Designing a home on a flag lot can have its challenges because the home can tend to feel and look closed in. The lot is surrounded by other lots and numerous trees, and this is no exception. There are unfortunately no views of the street for homes on flag lots. You try to make your own landscaping and sight features pop up more so that the home and surrounding area can be more enticing and visible. When we were designing the floor plan, we wanted our clients to have access to the most views possible considering their home is surrounded by trees and it rests far away from the street. The second floor has gorgeous view of some hills, and that is exactly what drew the location of the master bedroom, master bathroom, and balcony. The views of the hills and surrounding land dictated those monumental elements. The clients were interested in contemporary style, but wanted to do so in the context of using the existing structure. We took that request to heart and created a design that consists of new structural forms being inserted among traditional roof lines. New materials are also cladding with the older structure. We used wood siding for the exterior along with some stamped concrete and a metal roof. The corner window in the master bedroom has a perfect view of those hills in the distance, and the large balcony provides an even greater view of those hills while also welcoming the clients with a great space for leisure and entertainment. The clients are two very successful physicians who have grown adult children. They wanted this home to be a welcoming place for generations to come and for aging in place. This is a lasting vision for their new home, and we are happy we have been able to help them reach that vision.

This home / physicians office was orignally built in 1874 in an Eastlake style enlarged in 1902 in a Georgian Revival style. The accomplished physician and owner of this 1920’s bungalow wanted to convert a dungeon-like basement into a welcoming guest suite reflecting the home’s Craftsman-style architecture. The design-build project involved replacing a rickety staircase (see before photo) and creating a separate laundry room, as well as building out a sleeping area, sitting area, and bathroom for guests. Our solution was to keep the long, narrow guest space open and use a cased opening with columns to mark the separation of sleeping and sitting spaces. The original brick was retained for character around the opening to the hall, where a new stairway and laundry room were located.

A deep, grey-purple on the walls set the stage, and fabrics in variants of heathered purple, plum, pinks and roses was chosen for the bedding. Bright, mustard yellow added some excitement to the muted tones. The custom bedding creates an environment of luxury as well as extreme comfort. The two swivel chairs were updated with heathered purple velvet seat cushions piped in mustard yellow. The carpet was replaced with wood-look luxury vinyl plank—a must for families with kids and dogs. Because the client works many nights, being able to sleep during the day is a must. The ho-hum white blinds were replaced with floor to ceiling blackout drapery in embroidered linen on contemporary traverse rods. Her existing furniture, large and heavy and dark-stained, was painted white with a grey stain and distressed heavily. This gave the furniture new life as shabby chic! Additional lighting, updated fixtures, and carefully curated accessories round out this vibrant yet soothing space.
