This 1949 South Minneapolis home had an underutilized, unwelcoming basement with old, dark paneling in the family room, and an unfinished laundry, storage and work shop area. Headroom was at a premium because of low hanging duct work, plumbing and gas lines.Castle Building & Remodeling transformed this basement by creating a much more welcoming, well-lit and functional family room, with an added egress window, built-in storage units and a media area with a flat screen TV. Duct work and piping in the unfinished half of the basement was raised or consolidated to give adequate headroom for a bright and spacious new laundry area.
A new 3/4 bath completes the package, along with a built-in linen cabinet in the finished hallway. Storage areas were consolidated in separate areas of the basement with their own access doors.
The family now eagerly uses the basement space as a regular part of their home, no longer dreading the trip down to the ‘cellar’.

In this project, our team renovated an apartment that had previously been converted from a warehouse into a loft. The space is a study in contrasts, blending exposed brick and original rough-sawn columns and beams with warm colors and soft lighting.
The bathroom was completely gutted and remodeled, and we removed a closet to create space for a compact laundry unit. We also stained and finished the corner wood column, which had been hidden previously. All new tile and plumbing fixtures were installed, maintaining the old-fashioned, industrial feel of the space. Repurposed materials – such as the table-turned-vanity, and the shelf brackets constructed from pipes and plumbing fittings – capped off the design.
In the kitchen, removing an oversized pantry closet created additional counter space and opened up room for the refrigerator as well. Our team installed new countertops and a subtle tiled backsplash too.
The finishing touch was new lighting throughout the apartment, including feature lighting in the dining area and entryway. The result is a spacious, welcoming loft, perfect for entertaining and enjoyment.

It’s all in the details...
In this guest bedroom at our Harold Ashwell project, Cheryl chose natural fabrics in neutral tones with accents of black and white.
Two different wall papers were used, one a grass cloth and one a printed black and white landscape that is a beautiful backdrop to the headboard.
The headboard is a stunning design upholstered in a textured material with piping detail and black embroidered centre trims. The bed base is upholstered in the same material as the headboard. Gorgeous lamps adorn the custom made bedside pedestals.
Luxurious blockout lined curtains dress the windows which keeps the early morning sun out when closed.
A black and white vogue framed print, a full length mirror and a comfy leather chair adds the finishing touches to this welcoming space. Every detail was well considered and thought through.
Any visitor would love this bedroom.

Exquisite Windows & Decor. This guest bedroom was finished with elegant faux solo panels and beautiful piped cornice. We re-upholdered some heirloom furniture pieces to add the finishing touches.

Create the feeling of living in a loft in your home. It all starts by showing off the bones of the space rather than hiding them. Exposing pipes & removing layers off walls isn't practical for all us. Never fear we can help you still rock this style by bringing in rough metal finishes, reclaimed lumber & furnishings with clean lines. We've chosen accessories that invoke that industrial edge. These homeowners needed help finding the vision for their kitchen. At first they wanted to do a refresh of their existing kitchen with the same layout...they had an extremely large powder room and laundry room but what they really wanted was a space to entertain. We asked them to think outside the box...and see if they would be interested in moving some walls to provide a kitchen that provided more functionality, additional storage, and an island (which they couldn't fit in the existing layout). This project didn't come without some major structural work and relocating plumbing pipes that fed the upstairs...but it was all worth it in the end. The homeowners have a gorgeous entertaining space for family and friends. The warm tones of the wood complement the beautiful acacia floors. The Typhoon bordeaux countertops have some beautiful colors that run through it that are complemented in the border of the backsplash. A wine beverage area was added for entertaining guests.

XS residence is a living concept proposal for singles. The project is characterized by its L-shaped, elevated floor. The height differences on the floor as well as on the ceiling are the sole elements that define the space. The apartment is hence transparent, yet given the sense of rooms and corners. This former warehouse has existing pipes cutting through the interior at the entry where it resulted in stairs and undesirable, immediate climbs. By embracing the obstacle and extending it, the reading of the new, one bedroom apartment is as pure as lines (flows) and surfaces (spaces).
The heart of the radial layout is a sunken gathering platform. This introvert space is embraced by the elevated floor, which serves as the extension of seating, The visitors thereby sit naturally facing each other and converse. The elevated outer ring is an active, fluid platform which receives visitors. At its height, the dinning guests have a great view toward the city skyline which is otherwise hindered. This space also creates a buffer to the exterior where neighbors pass by.
The renovation removed the old flat ceiling, exposing the pitched roof structure to enhance the scale change of the space. The apartment is at its maximum height where activities and interactions take place and shrinks at the perimeter. It is an open layout with sense of spaces and intimacy.

This stunning luxury gym interior with bespoke mirrored cabinetry and premium slatted wood wall panelling was designed and installed by us for our client’s prime residence in Guildford, Surrey. The vertical panels are constructed in a highly durable natural light oak with a contemporary Nordic look. The neutral colours and natural oak in this room promote a serene atmosphere to allow for focus, concentration and relaxation.
Slatted wall panels for acoustics and aesthetics
The narrow slats absorb sound and reduce echo and reverberation for a comfortable and pleasant environment. An acoustic black backing adds extra soundproofing.
The sweeping curved shape of the bespoke slatted wood-clad doors are a special feature and soften the appearance of the cabinetry adding elegance to the environment. The discreet handles recessed into the edge of the doors maintain the sleek minimalist look. A practical satin matt clear finish enhances the grain and adds protection.
Handcrafted bespoke storage
The bespoke floor to ceiling fitted cabinetry features full-length safety mirrored doors with a silver finish. The mirrors provide visual feedback and enhance light and a feeling of spaciousness. Every millimetre of cabinet space has been tailored with cabinetry with storage features. These include deep pull-out drawers for heavy equipment; a custom space for golf clubs and bags; square cubby holes for trainer shoes, and rounded shelves in the curved section to organise small items. The interior of the cabinetry is lined with a hardwearing, easy to clean light grey textured laminate. The interior drawers and door backs are spray finished in Farrow and Ball Down Pipe, a stylish dark grey.

For a single woman working in downtown San Francisco, we were tasked with remodeling her 500 sq.ft. Victorian garden condo. We brought in more light by enlarging most of the openings to the rear and adding a sliding glass door in the kitchen. The kitchen features custom zebrawood cabinets, CaesarStone counters, stainless steel appliances and a large, deep square sink. The bathroom features a wall-hung Duravit vanity and toilet, recessed lighting, custom, built-in medicine cabinets and geometric glass tile. Wood tones in the kitchen and bath add a note of warmth to the clean modern lines. We designed a soft blue custom desk/tv unit and white bookshelves in the living room to make the most out of the space available. A modern JØTUL fireplace stove heats the space stylishly. We replaced all of the Victorian trim throughout with clean, modern trim and organized the ducts and pipes into soffits to create as orderly look as possible with the existing conditions.
