With an existing pool and retaining walls, we took this space and made it more modern offering many various spaces for lounging, enjoying the fire, listening to the water feature and an upper synthetic turf area for playing games. It is complete with bluestone pavers, a modern water feature and reflecting pool, a raised ipe deck, synthetic turf, glass railings, a modern, gas fire bowl and a stunning cedar privacy wall!

A bespoke residence, designed to suit its owner in every way. The result of a collaborative vision comprising the collective passion, taste, energy, and experience of our client, the architect, the builder, the utilities contractors, and ourselves, this home was planned to combine the best elements in the best ways, to complement a thoughtful, healthy, and green lifestyle not simply for today, but for years to come. Rain barrels collect rainwater from the downspouts and when full they divert it back out to the landscape through pop-up drains and downspout extenders hidden within the plants.

Edible landscaping encompasses much more then adding some veggie beds to one’s property. Creative layouts and material usage can incorporate year-round vegetable harvests in an aesthetically pleasing way. Perennial fruit trees, along with bushes and herbs, create a lush space full of beautiful, colors, textures, smells and tastes. Searching out and experimenting with different and rare varieties of edible plants keeps home gardens interesting. Edible landscaping gives access to food at its freshest, when it is most nutritious, and offers many more options than supermarket produce sections—also cutting down on transportation and packaging impacts. From edible estates to food forests, or simple integration of garden-based food production, Sweet Smiling Landscapes has the knowledge and experience to help home owners harvest their own bounty.

Spring Pond Maintenance, what should water garden and pond owners be doing in the spring? In general it is alway a good idea to do a complete pond clean out in the spring. Here in Monroe County, Rochester NY the winters can be harsh and we recommend to shut down the pond so there are no surprises in the spring. Early spring is the best time to perform your pond clean out ( before the beneficial bacteria become re-established). Once completed, you can enjoy your pond for the rest of the season with very little maintenance.
Keep your pond looking good and your fish healthy with regular pond clean out and maintenance in the spring.
First, drain the pond down to a few inches and pump some of the water into a storage tank for the fish. Now, we can catch the fish more easily, place them in the tank and cover them up.
Next, drain the pond down completely and remove all solids such as leaves and twigs. Take out all the filter media in the biofalls and skimmer. Once removed we then shop-vac out the biofalls and skimmer.

Galvanized water troughs used as planters. Bamboo was chosen for its tall, upright growth and evergreen screen to block apartment building. Photo credit: Michael Lockman

The galvanized trough planters serve as a focal point and provide an easy way to plant seasonal herbs, greens, berries and flowers. Good planting mix means there is no shovel needed--just scoop the dirt aside and plant the rest of the rooted herbs from the store. The center trough grows golden raspberries, lettuce and herbs. The chicken wire keeps squirrels from damaging the raspberry stalks.

The shingles on the upper part of this home are made of 80% recycled rubber. In renovating this home we strove to be environmentally conscious and respectful of the original architecture.

A low maintenance, easy care selection of tough perennials offering a long season of interest and flowers.
The incentive for this planting space is to hide a long series of septic tank covers. They've completely disappeared under this sea of Willowleaf Amsonia, Salvia, Coneflowers, tall Henry Eilers Rudbeckia, and Prairie Dropseed.
