Wanting to create an oasis in the city, our clients needed this garden to be lush and vibrant for their high-rise office space in Midtown, Manhattan. The garden needed to function as an area where clients and employees could hold meetings, have lunch, host after work functions or just take a relaxing break during work. The evergreen shrubs and grasses give those working inside their privacy while the tall trees provide shade for the terrace that is in full sun most of the day. A three season sun room added to this home over the existing deck. Acrylic panels with Cool Blue Heatstop coating where used to keep the south facing addition comfortable. Vented glass doors allow for natural cooling when desired. The owner is opening the double door access from the home to the sun room to allow the warmth of the sun room flow into his home.

At the onset of this project, we found a roof deck garden in dire need of repair after a strong wind storm blew over an older pergola and screen system previously attached to limestone parapet caps. Our goal was to design and install a sturdier low maintenance screen system to protect against any future wind storms. We replaced limestone parapet caps, repaired the roof membrane and flashing, painted the walls and then replaced old stone tiles with sleek porcelain pavers. Our one of a kind hardwood screens add privacy from the windows of the adjacent high rise. Other details include a custom outdoor kitchen, lots of LED lighting to add warmth and illumination in the evening and a variety of gorgeous plants and ornamental trees, some reclaimed from the old garden. All plants are on an automated irrigation system.

View from steps up to rooftop deck. Contrast in material between the modular ceramic tile decking and the live plant trays on the rooftop plant container is fiberglass with a boxwood acting as a focal feature. Cedar on the wall sis stained to mimic the look of IPE. The stepping stones and bluestone and sit flush with live roof material. Panels on right are frosted to allow light through yet act as a privacy barrier for the adjoining rooftop deck. Metal primed and painted posts.
