This bathroom is in a grand old Tudor house from 1929 and was originally the Maid's bath. 70 years later this old girl was given a much needed face lift! As much as I love a footed tub, it just isn't practical for the modern use of a shower so it had to go (don't worry I found it a good home!). We removed the old lathe and plaster walls and discovered space behind the eaves that allowed the space to open up, install new venting, much needed insulation, and center a generous vanity that provided storage and a great work surface. Plus we were able to create a niche for additional storage! We upgraded/added new lighting, tile (including the shampoo niche), and plumbing fixtures. The best change was the fresh, bright palette that allowed this space to shine. This old girl is smiling now!

Being the holistic counseling practice that they are, it was important that we provide a peaceful space for both ALP's counselors and clients. Over the past year, their basketball skills have improved significantly and more importantly the Pro Dunk gives their family the opportunity to play together. The dimensions of the playing area on their driveway are 35' x 18'. This is a Pro Dunk Silver Basketball System that was purchased in February of 2012. When well known philanthropist Rachel (Bunny) Mellon passed away in 2014, a key provision of her will was that her beloved Oak Spring Garden estate in in Upperville, Virginia would be converted to a center for the study of horticulture. During her lifetime, Bunny, a devoted gardener, created stunning gardens on the estate, amassed a collection of priceless horticultural manuscripts and even designed the famous White House Rose Garden. One of the challenges of achieving her vision of a center for horticultural learning on her estate was the need to convert the Mellon's existing stables into hotel-style rooms for visiting scholars. Working with Architect Karl Riedel of Leesburg, our Interior Designer Cathleen Gruver, and Peter Crane, President of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation and his wife Elinor, Gruver Cooley transformed spaces that had once housed race horses into comfortable rooms which fit seamlessly with the spirit of the Mellon property. ​ The original barn was designed in 1949 by New York architectural firm Cross and Sons, which was responsible for many notable buildings there. Although the barn's purpose changed dramatically, the exterior facade was maintained as originally conceived by Mr. Mellon. In the interior, all flooring, wainscoting and some millwork was fabricated using Oak Spring Farm grown timber in maple, oak, walnut and poplar. The desks within each room were also fabricated on site using wood grown on the estate. The barn is ADA accessible and 20% of the rooms meet ADA standards. ​ Making comfortable hotel-style rooms required a number of new systems to be integrated into the structure and provided the opportunity to use sustainable best building practices. Geothermal wells were drilled to provide energy efficient low impact heating and cooling. All ductwork is insulated and sealed, icynene insulation is used on all walls and attic areas and ground level floors are insulated with R6 insulation. Low water toilets and low pressure showers are used in each of the new bathrooms, and all windows are high efficiency advanced low e glass. ​ As you view the pictures above, we think you will agree that the Mellon Legacy has been well preserved while moving the property responsibly into a new chapter of its storied history.

A sumptuous upholstered bed in a beige just dark enough to provide a contrast to the wall color, sets the stage for the overlay of soft colors. Pared down to the pure tones of the sand, surf and sea, this master bedroom is the picture of serenity. Distinct Kamala bedding is showcased by the perfect blend of of blue, tan and beige colorblocks on panel drapes. Natural wood and soft white bedside tables reflect the preferences of this couple for both beauty practicality. A large dresser with special hardware conceals the bulky array of components so often crowding a bedroom with digital displays, glaring light and rows of knobs. A depressing dark wooden kitchen gets a major face lift! As you can see from the before pictures, the kitchen was quite dark. Even during the daytime the lady of the house had to turn on the lights to work there. An exterior pergola on a much lower level prevented light from coming in the house and though the pergola was a favourite spot to seat in the summer the humidity in the air made it unbearable and the access to it was not very practical. So in essence the family had no real seating room either. My goal... to create a functional kitchen filled with light and an adjacent seating area. My challenges...the pergola was very low and, not enough space for a seating room...... So.....I came up with something I have never done before nor did I think possible. Using specialised equipment I lifted the existing pergola up all in one piece, without breaking it apart, then I raised the floor covered by the pergola to the level of the house and made an opening from the house to the pergola...Mission accomplished! Lots of light now coming in and more than enough space for the family seating area
