This backyard paradise began with a muddy site, with all the grading sloping directly to the proposed poolside patio. The design for this outdoor living area would need to incorporate many challenges:
* The grading issues would be corrected with retaining walls, which would create a warm yet expansive area and provide additional seating.
* The pillars would require careful notching to insert the hardware for the pool gate.
* The patio would need to incorporate stormwater storage underneath.
* The edge of the poolside patio would require stabilization to prevent future settlement adjacent to the concrete pool deck.

We were hired to combine the main hall bath and a 1/2 bath of the master bedroom. The main bathroom was partially gutted when we started the design project as a severe water event had occurred. The client wanted an economical, but modern looking remodel that would be appealing to buyers in the future when she needed to sell and move to a retirement community as she currently lived alone.
The new tub/shower is in the location of the original 1/2 bath. Our homeowner wanted an easy to clean. but modern looking shower and vanity. Lanmark by Lane Marble was chosen as it has no grout and is a seamless product similar to Corian. We created 2 niches in the shower to store bottles to keep them off the tub deck and prevent them from slipping into the shower. An American Standard Princeton bathtub was chosen, so when the client eventually left her home, her home would be appealing to families with small children. For the vanity the same Lanmark color was chosen with 2 integrated sinks for easy cleaning.
Delta and Moen faucets, showerheads, and accessories were mix and matched to update the bathroom. Vinyl flooring was also chosen for its ease of cleaning and care.
Bamboo cabinetry was added to provide a modern,, timeless, and warm wood tone to the space. In this small home, storage is badly needed so I created a large linen cabinet with a pull-out shelf on the lower shelf for easier access for that shelf.
The original 1/2 bath window in the new tub/shower area was replaced with a new vinyl window and wrapped with Lanmark to provide a watertight system.
To give plenty of lighting at the vanity, George Kovacs LED lights fixtures were installed over each sink. This bathroom is now a light and bright space that will be functional and beautiful for years to come.

The oldest properties often have the most interesting tiled features and this Quarry Tiled Fireplace was a fine example. The customer lived in a quaint old cottage just outside the main town centre of Bedford and contacted us about restoring their fantastic Quarry tiled fireplace. While the customer knew that the cottage itself was over 200 years old, they had no idea whether or not the fireplace is an original feature.
However, it’s safe to say that the fireplace is very old in its own right, and that it had been a long time since it had experienced any kind of professional maintenance. It goes without saying that as any kind of tiles get older they will need more frequent care to keep them looking at their best. Here, the Quarry tiles desperately needed cleaning up as they were covered in old candle wax and what looked to be several years’ worth of general dirt. This had significant dulled the natural shades in the stone, leaving it looking lifeless and unappealing. The tiles would also require a fresh seal to ensure protection against muck in the future, and to help restore the colour to the stone.
Firstly, I applied Tile Doctor Oxy-Gel tile cleaner, which is particularly effective on tricky areas as being in a gel form it adheres better to non-horizontal areas. It was left it to dwell on the tiles for around twenty minutes so it could penetrate into the pores and get to work lifting out and dissolving the dirt that had been trapped in there over the years . Oxy-Gel is suitable for use on a wide range of natural stone tiles, including Quarry, Travertine and Slate. In this situation it cut through and removed most of the candlewax quite easily, and softened the stubborn residue to a point where I could easily remove the rest manually with handheld scrappers.
I then left area it to dry, with an air mover installed to reduce drying time. The advantage of using a gel product is that uses a smaller amount of moisture than a standard liquid cleaner, and therefore allows the tile to dry – and to be sealed – quicker; and in this case we were able to seal the same day where-as normally we would have to wait until the next day.
Once the tiles were completely dry, I sealed the fireplace with Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that fills the pores of the stone to prevent dirt and general muck from becoming ingrained, making the tiles much easier to keep clean in the long-term.
The added benefit of Colour Grow is that – as its name suggests – it emphasises the natural colours in the stone. This was something that the Quarry fireplace was desperately in need of, and the Colour a Grow quickly got the job done!
The customer was very pleased with the finished results. The clean removed years’ worth of muck, while the fresh seal brought out the natural beauty in the Quarry tiles and, at the same time, will protect the tiles on future candle-lit evenings.

Building a Shadowbox Wood Privacy Fence in Avon Lake, Ohio | Step-by-Step Installation | Wiler Fence CompanyWatch us build a classic shadowbox style wood privacy fence from start to finish in beautiful Avon Lake, Ohio (Lorain County). This 6-foot tall privacy fence provides excellent screening while allowing gentle airflow, making it a perfect choice for Northeast Ohio backyards. In this time-lapse and step-by-step video, you’ll see the entire professional installation process: Phase 1: Installing the 4x4 Posts
We begin by carefully laying out the fence line, digging precise post holes, and setting heavy-duty 4x4 pressure-treated posts in concrete. Each post is plumbed and braced to ensure a rock-solid foundation that will stand up to Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles for years to come. Phase 2: Installing the 2x4 Framing
Once the posts are set and cured, we attach the top and bottom 2x4 rails, followed by the middle rail. This strong framing system creates the backbone of the fence and ensures the structure stays straight and sturdy. Phase 3: Installing the Shadowbox Pickets
The final step is attaching the privacy pickets in the classic shadowbox pattern — alternating boards on the front and back sides of the rails. This design gives you near-complete privacy from both sides while still allowing air circulation to reduce wind load and prevent warping. The result is a beautiful, durable wood privacy fence that blends naturally with the neighborhood and gives the homeowners the private backyard they’ve been wanting.Project Location: Avon Lake, Ohio – Lorain County

Protect Your Home Investment with PremierOne® Epoxy Flooring
Most garages are a continuation of a home’s living space, so you want your garage to be as stylish and functional as the rest of your home. A custom garage floor adds beauty and utility, giving your garage a finished look and making it a more user-friendly space for however you choose to use it: parking cars, storage, sports equipment maintenance, laundry center, workbench, home gym, hobby center or even an entertainment nook.
With a wide variety of color and finish options, you can coordinate your floor with garage cabinets. All garage flooring options are designed to withstand the high traffic and heavy use that a garage endures on a daily basis. The easy-to-clean floor can help to prevent harmful concrete particles commonly found in unsealed concrete from being tracked into your home. Easier to care for than concrete, these solutions can create the ideal floor for a busy garage.

As the designer behind this master bathroom transformation, my mission was clear: to breathe new life into an outdated and dimly lit space while catering to my client's distinct desires. The project was marked by the client's unwavering commitment to enhancing functionality privacy and preserving the owner’s cherished MTI tub, all while adhering to the unalterable presence of existing windows.
FEATURES:
1. A glass pass-through between rooms allows natural light to flow freely, promoting a sense of openness.
2. The ceiling-mounted sliding glass door hardware elevates the shower experience with taller glass panels and effortless operation.
3. Accessibility and safety were paramount, resulting in a zero-entry shower, strategically placed grab bars, and an 'assist' TP holder.
4. To cater to varying preferences, a main showerhead and hand shower were accessible for standing and bench use.
5. A shared glass door between rooms eliminated the inconvenience of cumbersome door swings.
6. Privacy was enhanced through gradient glass etching, ensuring comfort and tranquility.
7. The digital shower system allowed for personalized controls, accommodating the unique preferences of the couple.
Creating a private bath around the existing MTI tub initially seemed insurmountable. However, innovative thinking led to a transformative solution. The drop-in tub was ingeniously converted into a free-standing tub with a narrow quartz deck adorned with a captivating mother-of-pearl mosaic tile surround. A floating walnut shelf at the tub's end introduced practicality and organic beauty.
Black plumbing fixtures were chosen to accentuate the mesmerizing depth of the mother-of-pearl mosaic tile. Horizontal book-matched walnut vanities introduced warmth and character, seamlessly connecting the interior to the outdoor view. The white quartz countertop is a refreshing contrast to the intricate finishes, lending a touch of sophistication. The ceiling light over the tub, akin to the icing on a cake, added a final note of elegance.
To meet the client's need for increased storage, the vanities have pullouts & roll-outs. These thoughtful additions ensured effortless access to personal care products. LED-lit medicine cabinets not only provided excellent lighting but also served as storage for everyday essentials. Vanity toe kick lighting is thoughtfully designed with a motion sensor at the entry, providing a guiding path to the water closet. Particularly valued during nighttime, this feature prevents unnecessary lights from illuminating, preserving the tranquility of those in bed.

This maple kitchen features Starmark cabinets in the Bridgeport door style with a Marshmallow Cream Tinted Varnish finish and a Caesarstone Jet Black countertop.

The Campbell family bought this New Hampshire lake side property to build a family summer residence. The home was integrated into the landscape and takes advantage of views as well as solar gain. The configuration of the rooms allows each family member to enjoy their own private spaces in both winter and summer months.
The Residence is a timber frame using Douglas fir from Washington State, where the Campbell's live. The home is wrapped with a wide porch with screened in areas. One corner overlooking the lake has an outdoor fire place integrated into the porch timber framing. This provides a wonderful outdoor fire experience under the roof.
The large open concept living and dining room is lit by dormers from above. This two story space is bordered by the stairs to the second floor with a half round look out, all timber framed.
The home is well insulated throughout using blown-in cellulose and the foundation insulation was carefully configured to prevent thermal breaks. In addition to the custom timber frame, a variety of custom built-in furniture elements were constructed using a variety of wood types depending on lighting and location.

At the outset, this project began with the transformation of a 2-car attached garage. The goal was to create a mudroom, an exercise room, and a breezeway to seamlessly connect the spacious detached garage with the main part of the house. Additionally, the project involved partial roof removal and the addition of a new front entry.
But then came an unexpected twist – scope creep.
We found ourselves veering away from the initial client-supplied architectural plans. After numerous consultations with the clients and several iterations of the design, we arrived at a significantly improved plan for the remodel and addition.
Our journey commenced with the demolition of almost the entire former 2-car garage, making space for a new, oversized 3-car garage measuring 40′ x 28′. This garage was strategically placed between the existing house and the large detached garage. We introduced a custom low-sloped flat roof, designed to address historical drainage issues.
To mitigate water pooling, we created a custom concrete step at the back corner of the garage, equipped with a sturdy metal grate that sits flush with the step. We also installed a PVC drainage system, commencing at the step and running beneath a newly designed patio, ultimately draining into the yard. These measures have significantly reduced water accumulation around the house.
The new garage boasts several features, including Longboard aluminum siding, custom full glass garage doors, interior drywall finished to a level 4, an abundance of can lights, an epoxy floor coating, vinyl base trim, a new forced air garage heater, and more.
The clients also requested a designated space for their three kids and their friends to enjoy, thus giving birth to the “Kid Zone.” We partitioned a section of the existing oversized garage, resulting in a space measuring approximately 22′ x 32′, brimming with entertainment possibilities. To enhance control over the temperature in the Kid Zone, we collaborated with our licensed HVAC partner to install a cold weather mini-split system.
One of the most significant challenges was the modernization and consolidation of the home’s main electrical systems. We reconfigured and combined 6-7 different electrical panels into just two. One panel serves the main house, while the second is dedicated to backup power from a generator. These panels, along with the boiler for the in-floor heating system, are housed in a newly constructed mechanical room within the Kid Zone.
Inside the main house, we completed various tasks, such as removing the ceiling in the hallway from the new garage to address prior water damage, improve insulation, and rework electrical and HVAC systems. We also replaced the ceiling from the front door to the base of the stairs, adding new can lighting and enhancing insulation. Skilled drywall specialists then installed and finished new drywall to a level 5 standard.
The exterior of the house underwent a complete overhaul. Before installing new roofing on the entire house and garage, we modified an existing flat roof by adding custom lumber and plywood to enhance the pitch, preventing future ice dams. A new rubber roof was expertly installed on the oversized 3-car garage, and the flat roof section we re-framed.
Our meticulous exterior team removed old white aluminum soffit, fascia, and gutters, replacing them with new framing to accommodate Longboard soffit material. This task was particularly challenging due to the age of the house and the non-standard wall and roof framing. Our skilled exterior subcontractors ensured a perfect fit.
Near the pool area, we discovered severe rot and decay from years of water intrusion. After informing the homeowners, we ordered and installed five new commercial-style block framed windows and a custom 8′ high Anderson patio door. This involved careful removal and replacement of window headers from the outside to avoid disturbing the finished part of the house. We reframed the large openings to fit the new windows, and our skilled trim carpenters installed new walnut casing, base, and window sills.
In total, we replaced around 900 lineal feet of soffit and installed approximately 32 squares of aluminum siding. The entire house was meticulously prepped, repaired, and painted according to the client’s chosen color.
Throughout the project, we incorporated numerous custom touches and unique design elements, some of which you can see in the pictures. Our team also addressed various unforeseen challenges, from soil issues to rot and decay repair, roof leaks, drainage problems, electrical and HVAC complexities, and much more.
At Xpand Inc., we take pride in making it all happen, turning your remodeling and renovation dreams into reality.

This homeowner in Wayne wanted to refine a small wooded area bordering their driveway and street without losing the natural character of the landscape. The space had been left largely unmaintained, with accumulated leaves, debris, and overgrown plants detracting from its potential.
Preparing the Landscape
Our team began by carefully clearing out unwanted growth, creating a clean foundation while preserving the existing woodland feel. Once the area was prepped, we added a healthy layer of bio-soil to improve planting conditions and support long-term growth.
To ensure the new landscape blended seamlessly with its surroundings, we selected shade-tolerant shrubs. These plants thrive in lower-light conditions and naturally complement wooded environments, providing structure, texture, and year-round interest without looking overly formal.
Natural Touches
Along the edge of the driveway, we installed a border of river rock to prevent mulch and soil from washing onto the pavement. The river rock not only serves a practical purpose but also adds visual interest and clearly defines the new planting area.

The Setup
The homeowners of this Barrington Hills residence approached Drury Design with a clear vision: transform their existing kitchen into a space that would better serve their active family of four. With two young children who are homeschooled and love to bake with their mom, plus two dogs, this kitchen needed to function as the true heart of the home.
The existing kitchen was functional but didn’t maximize the potential of the beautiful natural light and scenic views available through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The space was locked between the dining room and family room, which limited structural modifications, but the homeowners wanted to create a more family-friendly environment that would complement the warm walnut built-ins and furnishings in the adjacent dining room while staying true to the home’s overall aesthetic.
Design Objectives:
Create a highly functional workspace that accommodates multiple family members cooking and gathering simultaneously
Maximize the connection to the beautiful outdoor scenery and natural light through thoughtful design choices
Establish a cohesive color palette that complements the existing walnut elements in the adjacent dining room without becoming too tone-on-tone (aka “matchy matchy”)
Improve the seating arrangement to take advantage of the stunning views (rather than facing away from the windows)
Work within the existing architectural constraints, including a curved soffit that could not be removed
Increase storage capacity while maintaining clean, uncluttered sightlines throughout the space
Design Challenges:
The curved soffit presented a design dilemma of whether to echo the curve throughout the kitchen or work with it in a more subtle way
The relatively low ceiling height required careful consideration to avoid making the space feel cramped or cave-like
The existing hardwood floor could not be refinished, which meant the new kitchen footprint had to match or exceed the original layout exactly
Finding the right balance of warm and neutral tones to complement both the existing walnut elements nearby and the natural outdoor views proved challenging
The refrigerator placement was constrained by door swing requirements, which affected the entire layout and prevented centering the sink on the back wall
Rethinking the original seating, which faced inward toward the kitchen (turning backs to the beautiful windows and outdoor views)
Pendant lighting from the previous kitchen obstructed views to the outdoors despite the abundant natural light available
The Renewed Space
Design Solutions:
The curved soffit was embraced subtly through the full slab backsplash, which echoes the curve without requiring curved cabinetry or architectural elements that might feel forced
Low ceiling challenges were addressed by using lighter painted cabinets for some tall elements, including the double oven, pantries, and refrigerator area, creating an airy feel while reserving the darker stained walnut for the center section and island
The floor constraint was managed by designing the new layout to cover all previously unfinished areas while maintaining the exact footprint, with only minor touch-ups needed in a few areas
The color palette balances warm walnut stain (harmonizing with the dining room built-ins) with soft, neutral painted cabinets – avoiding stark white that wouldn’t complement the home’s warm aesthetic
Refrigerator placement was optimized with a slim pullout pantry to the left, allowing proper door clearance while maintaining the desired layout flow and enabling the main pantry to be positioned adjacently
The seating was completely reimagined with a built-in banquette facing the windows, allowing diners to enjoy the outdoor views while providing flexible seating for two to four people
Decorative pendant lighting was eliminated in favor of recessed can lights, preserving the unobstructed views to the beautiful outdoor scenery
This kitchen transformation demonstrates how thoughtful design can dramatically improve functionality for a busy family while honoring existing architectural elements. The children immediately began cooking and baking with their mother in the new space, and the window-facing banquette has become a favorite gathering spot where the family can enjoy both meals and the beautiful outdoor views.
