Modern Sitting Room with Open Concept Flow, Oak Flooring, and Custom Architectural Divider | Chicago Custom Home This refined lounge space offers a peaceful escape within a larger open-concept layout, showcasing the artistry of custom architectural partitioning, layered lighting, and tailored furnishings. Located within a newly built custom home in Chicago, this space bridges sophistication with warmth—ideal for reading, conversation, or quiet reflection. The room is anchored by wide-plank oak flooring and features a palette of soothing grays and natural wood tones. Low-profile mid-century chairs upholstered in deep indigo velvet add comfort and color, while the custom slatted divider wall provides both visual separation and flow. To the left, a sleek matte black-framed glass partition opens up the space while still offering definition—an architectural moment that elevates both form and function. From the ceiling's recessed lighting and statement fan fixture to the handcrafted coffee table and natural textures, every detail was curated to feel intentional. This lounge reflects the New Explode Construction philosophy: we don't just design rooms—we shape experiences. Every square foot matters.

When our clients approached us to renovate their 1950s Newfoundland home, their goal was to modernize while reflecting both their West Coast roots and current East Coast lifestyle. What began as a simple ensuite repair expanded into a full home transformation, completed in two thoughtfully phased renovations. Drawing from our cross-coastal experience—and a personal connection to the home’s past—we blended classic East Coast charm with West Coast simplicity. From reworking the layout and finishes to integrating their art collection and layering in warm, tactile materials, every detail was designed to feel cohesive, inviting, and deeply personal.

For a family that loves hosting large gatherings, this expansive home is a dream; boasting two unique entertaining spaces, each expanding onto outdoor-living areas, that capture its magnificent views. The sheer size of the home allows for various ‘experiences’; from a rec room perfect for hosting game day and an eat-in wine room escape on the lower-level, to a calming 2-story family greatroom on the main. Floors are connected by freestanding stairs, framing a custom cascading-pendant light, backed by a stone accent wall, and facing a 3-story waterfall. A custom metal art installation, templated from a cherished tree on the property, both brings nature inside and showcases the immense vertical volume of the house. Photography: Paul Grdina
