A colored concrete driveway leads downhill to the garage and home. Terraces created by Lannon outcropping walls provide opportunities for display of outdoor sculpture as well as colorful shrub, ornamental grasses and perennials. Control of runoff from the drive is important and a series of dry streambeds interconnected with drain tile and catch basins intercepts and redirects the water.

This site underwent a dramatic transformation from a casual outdoor afterthought to a well-defined, functional, and beautiful space. The front entry was redirected and opened, and features the porch and landing. The raised garden beds line the entire space creating rooms and directional flow. The design begins with a renovation of the major spaces. Before gutting, the foyer and dining room were two awkwardly shaped rooms of approximately the same size, isolated from each other. The problem is to create a more spacious, open feeling while maintaining a sense of division between the two spaces. This is accomplished by removing the wall between them and adding a low-ceilinged portal in its stead. The design of the portal is a modern abstract of the Palladian motif, which serves several functions. It reduces the awkward length of the foyer, making the dining room seem larger by comparison. The portal's depth and rhythmic symmetry create an axis through to the dining room which makes the entire space seem larger. Finally, the portal serves as an ante-space redirecting circulation to the living room. Sandblasted panels et into the sides of the portals help conceal the kitchen door; ledges provide a display space for art or flowers.

2012 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL BASEMENT INTERIOR A newer house in the suburb of Ashburn, Virginia, is home to this military couple. With a growing family and a daughter moving back home, they were in need of more space. An unfinished basement offered plenty of space for a remodel, but coming up with a desirable floor plan was difficult due to the location of a stairway that the builder had installed and the location of the furnace and hot water heater. Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, the couple came up with a plan that moved the furnace and hot water heater to a storage room and redirected the stairway in order to create a workable layout. The primary goal was to have a home office, full bathroom, guest bedroom and a large entertaining area. The focal point of the design is a new gas fireplace embedded in ledge stone with a large LED television above it. A bar with custom cabinetry, exotic stone countertops and decorative pendant lighting creates a central area for the family to gather.
