In this remarkable project, we undertook the transformation of an old garage into an exceptional indoor-outdoor living space. By reframing the garage ceiling and walls, we ensured a secure foundation for the installation of drywall, creating a polished and finished look. The addition of a brand new bi-fold door seamlessly connected the interior to a stunning patio cover, while the inclusion of bar cabinets and a stylish glass garage door further elevated the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space. To provide a captivating focal point, we installed a beautiful wallpaper, accentuating an accent wall that adds a touch of elegance to the overall design.

Home office design. Previously a blank slate room: beige carpet and walls. Used client's existing desk and repurposed her antique lingerie chest for office supply storage. About half of the wall art was already owned by the client, but we reframed some pieces and added some. Picked up the rug, corner chair, side table, lamp, and small decor pieces from auctions and estate sales for pennies on the dollar. Client painted the accent wall herself, to save costs. Flooring was done in LVP as a whole-home re-flooring job at the start of the condo renovation, during which all flooring throughout the home was replaced with LVP except in bedrooms. Cost for materials, furniture, and decor purchased for this room was under $750; with flooring cost for this space added, it would be approximately $2,000 all in.

Built in the early 1950s, this small urban townhouse is located in North Old Town Alexandria in an area currently undergoing major redevelopment. The neighborhood is popular with, and affordable for, young people and families, and very convenient to Washington, DC. In its heyday, the townhouse touted a stately brick exterior, plaster walls, tongue and groove wood flooring and beautiful wooden staircase. Sixty years later, however, the homeowners were faced with crumbling masonry, sagging floors, a double layer of wallpaper over the plaster walls, a crumbling staircase, a dysfunctional kitchen and small, dark second floor rooms. Additionally, the basement had a low ceiling, moldy and cinder block walls, no plumbing and a large boiler taking up most of the space. The homeowners’ goal was to restore the exterior’s historic look while creating an interior up-to-date for the 21st Century. To turn their vision into reality, they turned to Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes. Design Solutions To maintain the townhome’s historic exterior, the Michael Nash team carefully removed, salvaged, restored and reused existing brick masonry. Matching fascia boards and windows were combined with existing windows to complete the exterior renovation. All interior walls were gutted and reframed. New electrical work, new insulation and new drywall were installed. Much of the home’s original trim was salvaged and reused, as was a piece of art glass, all to keep a bit of the past in the renovation. The sagging subfloors were fixed, new hard wood floors were installed and a new staircase and railing were designed in a style similar to the original. The solid wall between the kitchen and the dining room was removed, plumbing was relocated for a new sink location and the kitchen got expanded with an island into the dining room. Closet and plumbing stacks were relocated to allow a new space for fridge. Stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and custom cabinetry highlight the new modern kitchen. The plan called for redesigning the three bedrooms on the second floor to allow a larger bathroom, walk-in closet and wider hallways. In addition to new roofing, a large skylight was installed to allow natural light into the bathroom and the upper hallway. The basement was totally revamped. New plumbing was put in place for a full bathroom, laundry room and a den. New e-grass window was installed in the basement to bring this basement up to current building codes. This homeowners love the neighborhood and now their home gives them the opportunity to stay in the same location.

Our homeowners purchased this home for its excellent location and great bones. They were desirous of returning it to the era of it’s time while updating and modernizing it with the elegance it deserved. To add to our challenges, they were living out of the country during our design and renovation, making for great communications utilizing modern technology to ensure we could deliver what they hoped to achieve. We opened some space in the kitchen to create an updated and more functional kitchen for this active family, relocating appliances for efficiency, adding an island and relocating a chimney. We had structural challenges with the sagging hardwood floors, which required us to reframe floor systems, and while we were at it, we antique finished the hardwoods reminiscent of the 1940’s. We added wainscoting in the dining room and entry stair hallway to enhance the old-world look and added some arched openings to match other areas of the home. We also added custom moldings to the fireplace wall to allow it to shine as a focal point in the space, utilizing restored antique light fixtures. The finished result is stunning and truly honors the integrity of the original time period of this home.

We had the pleasure to design and execute this wonderful project for a couple in Sherman Oaks. Client was in need of a 4th bedroom and a brighter bigger living space. We removed and reframed a 30' load bearing wall to unite the living room with the dining room and sitting area into 1 great room, we opened a 17' opening to the back yard to allow natural light to brighten the space and the greatest trick was relocating the kitchen from an enclosed space to the new great room and turning the old kitchen space into the 4th bedroom the client requested. Notice how the warmth of the European oak floors interact with the more modern blue island and the yellow barstools. The large island that can seat 8 people acts as a superb work space and an unofficial dining area. All custom solid wood cabinets and the high end appliance complete the look of this new magnificent and warm space for the family to enjoy.

They also wanted a built-in breakfast nook, improved pantry space, more functional storage on either side of their fireplace, and a built-in appearance for the TV above the mantel. The original built-in desk was not used, and they preferred for that space to serve as a small bar area with refrigeration and a place to store their printer. We designed several plans for the space before selecting the final layout. The new design required the removal of the soffit over the old sink, as well as a small wall beside the old refrigerator. The wall beside the stairwell had to be shortened 13 inches and a new beam installed to carry the load of the home’s 2nd story to gain enough space for the large central island. The existing closet pantry walls were also reconfigured as per the new plan. This serves as a great reminder that Dimensions In Wood is much more than just custom cabinets. Central to the entire custom kitchen is an 8-foot Walnut island. The huge island, which comfortably seats three, is topped with Essenza Blue quartzite. The stone’s natural striations are beautiful. Quartzite is harder than granite, and less likely to stain than other stones because of its density. The couple had to look through multiple slabs to find a piece they LOVED. The island’s custom Walnut cabinetry, built to resemble a piece of custom furniture, was stained Bronzed Walnut by Sherwin Williams. The 4-foot Galley Workstation in the island, handles all the kitchen’s prep, serving, and cleanup needs. The Galley’s culinary tools include an upper tier cutting board, upper tier drying rack, 2 lower tier platforms, 11″ colander with non-slip handles, and 11” mixing bowl with lid and non-slip bottom. Learn more about the amazing Galley Workstation here. A Waterstone gantry faucet in a pewter finish combines a pull-down sprayer for maximum mobility and a articulated swivel spout. A water tap with reverse osmosis filter provides the highest quality drinking water. To keep a clean and sleek counter we installed a raised air switch for the garbage disposal and integrated soap dispenser. The island also houses the Thermador Sapphire 7-Program Dishwasher with a hidden touch control panel and a custom Walnut wood front. The cabinetry under the Galley Workstation features a trash roll out, as well as storage for the culinary tools. Shortening the stairwell wall, and reframing around the stairs, which included shortening the handrail, also made room for a bi-fold door walk-in pantry with extra roll out storage and space for a small microwave. Above the panty doors is a remote controlled, electric motor powered, lift up cabinet door which hides a flat screen TV, used while the family is cooking. To the right of the walk-in pantry is cold food storage. The Thermador, 30-inch Freedom Collection refrigerator and 24-inch built-in freezer column with internal ice maker are covered with matching cabinetry fronts. An open display space was designed above the units, creating an aesthetically beautiful wall. To the right of the refrigerator & freezer columns is a tall cabinet designed for the built-in Thermador steam and convection oven. The convention steam oven is a relatively new technology for homes, but its versatility and food quality is amazing. To the right of this is a pull-out appliance pantry which provides easy access and storage for a stand mixer, blender, and any other appliance you do not want to clutter the counter. The most visible wall of the kitchen features the 36-inch Thermador Professional Series Harmony Gas Range with Griddle. Between the range and custom designed wood hood, a framed mosaic tile accent in the backsplash, creates a focal point. To clear the air, the Professional Series Thermador 42-inch ventilation insert provides excellent exhaust capabilities, as well as providing multi-level, vivid LED lights for beautiful illumination. The wall cabinetry symmetrically flanks the custom hood, utilizing deeper wall cabinetry on each end, allowing for storage of oversized dishware. The base cabinetry on this wall is made up of drawers, except for the corner, which is a Kesseböhmer LeMans II. This specially designed shelf system allows ease of access in underutilized blind corners. The dual action articulation system with soft close mechanism ensures a smooth open and close. Rounding the corner to the outside wall, the base cabinetry was built to a narrower depth, providing additional space for the island, as well as easier access to the new larger pass-thru window which serves the screen porch. The client selected Black Vermont granite countertops with an ogee edge to contrast the Linen White painted cabinetry. The door to the screen porch was replaced with a Marvin Exterior Door with a raised panel at the bottom of the 3⁄4 glass door. Marvin Windows replaced the other windows in the space increasing the energy efficiency and value of the home. To establish the breakfast nook, a bench with drawers and an upholstered seat was built into the bay area of the room. Custom bookshelves were built with open shelves, cabinet doors, and drawers on either side of the fireplace. A new stone hearth and fireplace surround were installed. Above the existing mantel we built a recessed space for the flat screen television hiding all wiring inside the walls for a completely clean look. The space that was once a desk was transformed into a bar area. The glass shelves and glass cabinet front liquor cabinet stand out. But this bar area has hidden secrets. Tucked beneath the black granite is a Thermador under-counter double drawer refrigerator with matching wood front panels. They blend in perfectly with the cabinets. A wireless printer is easily accessed on a slide out drawer. Plus, what looks like merely wooden panels on the wall are concealing recessed storage for more bottles and glasses! Overhead recessed lighting and speaker system provide illumination and entertainment through the entire space. This luxury home had original, solid oak flooring through most of the first floor which the homeowner obviously wanted to keep but were in desperate need of repair and refinishing. Our master craftsmen wove in new wood flooring to match the old where needed, particularly where walls had been changed and where the floor was damaged. We sanded the floors, smoothing away years of wear and tear. The entire wood floor was then uniformly stained, making it impossible to differentiate where any repairs were made. Extensive Kitchen, living area remodel complete! There was a lot of demo, reframing and rearranging involved in this beautiful remodel to get it to it’s final result. We first had to remove every surface including several walls to open up the Kitchen to the living room and what is now a bar area where our clients can relax, play pool and watch TV. Off the Kitchen is a new laundry with extra storage and countertop space. In removing the walls in the kitchen, we were able to create a large island, move the appliances around and created a new open concept living space. The cabinets in the bar area, laundry and Kitchen perimeter are a white shaker style cabinet with the Island being a separate beautiful Grey color. All of the cabinets were topped with a gorgeous Vittoria white quartz countertop. The Kitchen was then completed with the stand out Grey Glazed Brick backsplash. Finally, the flooring! The home was also updated with a new 12x48 Aequa Tur wood look tile. We created a custom design with this tile at the entry way and transitioned between rooms with a soldier pattern. “Bob Barzilay of Proper pH told the clients the hot tub was just too damaged to continue fixing it," says Bill. "It seemed far more economical to get a new hot tub rather than continually fix the old one.” The clients agreed and Proper pH Pools removed the old hot tub and took out most of the decking around it and reframed it. They also built a raised gravel surround, using railroad ties to create a sand-box-like area that they filled with gravel. “Proper pH Pools made room for the new spa in same spot as the old hot tub, only it is now lifted above existing grade,” says Bill. “This allows for proper draining and water won’t pool around the new spa like it used to.” Proper pH Pools also cleverly solved the access problem created in the earlier installation, continues Bill. They put in a removable panel made out of decking which is easy to take out for a service person to get at it. “With the deck-matching access panel, it is so well done you can’t tell it’s there.”

Jill’s primary bathroom needed more than just a facelift. The finishes felt outdated, storage space was lacking, and the layout didn’t offer a relaxing retreat. She wanted a design that was functional every day but also felt fresh and inviting. The old shower was removed down to the studs to create a brand-new custom design. Updated plumbing, waterproofing, and framing prepared the space for a much more durable and attractive setup. Walls were tiled with Bianco Lasa Matte in a vertical straight stack pattern, giving the shower clean lines and a spacious feel. A recessed niche was reframed to a larger size and finished with Blume Deco porcelain tile, creating an eye-catching accent. The shower floor was covered with Snow White recycled glass mosaic, paired with stainless Delta Trinsic fixtures for a cohesive look. A frameless glass enclosure with brushed nickel hardware opened up the room and completed the design. Old cabinetry was replaced with navy blue cabinets from Waypoint. A tall pantry cabinet in the center created more organization, while drawers and additional base cabinets maximized space. MSI Calacatta Alto quartz countertops were installed along with two undermount sinks for a clean, polished look. Delta Trinsic faucets tied in with the shower fixtures, keeping consistency throughout the bathroom. Kohler Essential framed mirrors and Kichler Crosby vanity lights centered over each sink improved balance and lighting. Satin nickel hardware from Elements completed the cabinetry, adding subtle shine against the bold cabinet finish. Carpet was replaced with Blume Deco tile, laid on a diagonal to add personality and connect with the shower niche. The water closet received the same tile, a new Miseno Bella dual-flush toilet, updated Delta accessories, and two new exhaust fans for better comfort.

The staircase underwent a complete renovation, starting with structural reframing to ensure proper alignment, support, and safety. New treads and risers were installed, featuring rich wood flooring on each step for a clean, modern finish. The remodel includes the installation of a custom handrail system, combining elegantly crafted posts and balusters with a smooth top rail, all painted to complement the home’s updated interior design. The surrounding flooring area and bedrooms were renovated, with new baseboards installed along the staircase walls for a seamless transition and refined look. Drywall repair and paint patching were performed throughout the stairwell area to achieve a smooth surface and consistent finish, matching the existing wall texture and color. Clean, white, and coastal-styled kitchen with simple semi-custom cabinets and Carrara Venato quatz countertops. Countertops included demi-bullnose edges on the surround and a more decorative detail of short ogee on the island. Refinished floors and reframed first floor to open the kitchen into the living room. Complete new custom pantry with highlighted class shelves and a one-stop-shop for drinks. Blanco concrete gray undermount sink with a Signature Hardware polished nickel sink faucet to match the rest of the polished nickel accents. Custom hood with a 36" thermador range. The homeowner wanted a more fresh, lighter-looking office using their existing furniture. Using his art that we had reframed, we created a French-inspired theme with a lantern pendant and clean, French inspired sconce lighting. An updated side table, rug and desk chair, along with some fun but functional accessories, kept this office feeling warm but much more airy.

This project was about much more than a new kitchen. We began by opening up the floor plan, removing the arched opening and shortening the walls that separated the kitchen from the adjoining living and great room. We re-framed the kitchen window and installed a stunning picture window that extends all the way down to the countertop, creating an incredible focal point. We also installed new recessed LED lighting throughout the kitchen, living room, and great room. The kitchen was redesigned with both beauty and functionality in mind. We eliminated the raised bar and extended the peninsula to provide additional seating, countertop workspace, and storage. Every cabinet was thoughtfully planned with custom organization, including spice pullout, deep drawers for pots and pans, and a baking sheet divider. Beautiful ceiling-height cabinetry by Crown of SLC creates a timeless, custom look, while quartz countertops flow throughout the kitchen and into the new hallway beverage bar featuring a built-in wine refrigerator. The finishing touches include new stainless steel appliances, a large double oven, and gas cook-top with a downdraft ventilation system.
