ANNAPOLIS FILM FESTIVAL 2016
Design Concept
With film makers visiting from all corners of the country and globe, my vision was to highlight the beauty and mysteries of the Chesapeake Bay through Zentangle© inspired art.
The hand painted backdrop in the main seating area depicts some of our waterway's magical creatures. We are home to three different species of jellyfish, as well as ribbed mussels and abundant submerged aquatic vegetation.
The interview area screen is hand painted. The red herring swimming against the flow is particularly relevant to this festival for its diversification from the mainstream. It also highlights the river herring project in our bay, funded by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation.
Finally, the conference area displays Maryland's state fish, the Striped Bass, on a driftwood easel from our shores.

When entering this home, you'd have a hard time not acknowledging that someone with a skilled hand and strong appreciation for craft lives here. Rich woods, honest materials and homemade items are all around. We sought to bring that same vibe into their newly updated master bathroom.
See at the left and right of this photograph are the live edge shelves (created by our client). During our challenge of dividing the space, we incorporated a small entry cove-- experience before opening into the master bathroom itself.

If clutter drives you crazy you should absolutely consider incorporating a hidden closet desk (or two) into your home. In this office, we converted two double closets into two individual hidden work zones so that when the doors close at the end of the day, the main office remains looking neat

The transformation of this ranch-style home in Carlsbad, CA, exemplifies a perfect blend of preserving the charm of its 1940s origins while infusing modern elements to create a unique and inviting space. By incorporating the clients' love for pottery and natural woods, the redesign pays homage to these preferences while enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal and functionality of the home. From building new decks and railings, surf showers, a reface of the home, custom light up address signs from GR Designs Line, and more custom elements to make this charming home pop.
The redesign carefully retains the distinctive characteristics of the 1940s style, such as architectural elements, layout, and overall ambiance. This preservation ensures that the home maintains its historical charm and authenticity while undergoing a modern transformation. To infuse a contemporary flair into the design, modern elements are strategically introduced. These modern twists add freshness and relevance to the space while complementing the existing architectural features. This balanced approach creates a harmonious blend of old and new, offering a timeless appeal.
The design concept revolves around the clients' passion for pottery and natural woods. These elements serve as focal points throughout the home, lending a sense of warmth, texture, and earthiness to the interior spaces. By integrating pottery-inspired accents and showcasing the beauty of natural wood grains, the design celebrates the clients' interests and preferences. A key highlight of the redesign is the use of custom-made tile from Japan, reminiscent of beautifully glazed pottery. This bespoke tile adds a touch of artistry and craftsmanship to the home, elevating its visual appeal and creating a unique focal point. Additionally, fabrics that evoke the elements of the ocean further enhance the connection with the surrounding natural environment, fostering a serene and tranquil atmosphere indoors.
The overall design concept aims to evoke a warm, lived-in feeling, inviting occupants and guests to relax and unwind. By incorporating elements that resonate with the clients' personal tastes and preferences, the home becomes more than just a living space—it becomes a reflection of their lifestyle, interests, and identity.
In summary, the redesign of this ranch-style home in Carlsbad, CA, successfully merges the charm of its 1940s origins with modern elements, creating a space that is both timeless and distinctive. Through careful attention to detail, thoughtful selection of materials, rebuilding of elements outside to add character, and a focus on personalization, the home embodies a warm, inviting atmosphere that celebrates the clients' passions and enhances their everyday living experience.
This project is on the same property as the Carlsbad Cottage and is a great journey of new and old.

Can you spot the jungle?⠀This is a DIY garden I designed conceptually and that was executed by the client based on my observations of what they like/not and their style of living, putting them in touch with the relevant suppliers I knew. What I love best though is their beautiful execution and loved the collaboration that occurred throughout the project and their continued dedication to its maintenance. ⠀

The remarkable Greek inspired indoor pool facility has a blend of contemporary rectilinear components with Greek-Roman architectural elements and finishes, such as the over-extending, ancient-style aqueduct that transitions from the spa into the pool, and the hand carved fire-water features at each end of the room. The aqueduct is a key relevance to the style which portrays an ancient cultural method of elutriating stagnant bath water with a continuous supply of fresh water. Each elaborately hand carved feature sets a mood of Greek architectural expression in this space. The two fire-water features at each end of the pool and all of the column structural support depict a ‘Doric’ style consisting of channeled columns. Also, to enhance this space with a full perspective of Greek-Roman style, the convex ceiling depicts a vision of an opened-ceiling that reveals a fully animated Greek-mythological star setting created by fiber optic lighting. Geothermal technology is the primary source for heating and cooling the pool and spa. Although they appear to be one body of water, they are independent so the spa can be maintained at 103degrees all year round.

Set in the heart of Sarasota’s historic Cherokee Park, Watersound sits on a premier corner lot, blending timeless architectural design with contemporary elegance. Embodying a relaxed Florida vernacular style, the home wraps around an interior courtyard, drawing in natural light and breezes. The layout fosters a connection to nature, with the home tailored to its surroundings as though it had been in the family for generations, yet feeling vibrant and fresh.
A welcoming porch defines the entry, while the guest house and pool loggia frame the auto court. The living room opens to a spacious screened porch through expansive folding glass doors, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The grand screened porch, designed for living, dining, and cooking, features a summer kitchen and coral stone flooring, making outdoor living central to the home’s design.
Inside, vaulted ceilings, a precast firebrick-lined fireplace, custom cabinetry, and a Lacanche range anchor the living and kitchen areas. Thoughtful details such as herringbone wood flooring, terra cotta tile, rich hues, whimsical wallpaper, and vintage-inspired penny round tiles bring charm and character throughout. A bespoke Gulf Coast modern color palette and decorative lighting crafted from brass, blackened bronze, and white enamel unify the vintage and modern elements.

The extensive remodeling done on this project brought as a result a classy and welcoming perfectly U-Shape layout kitchen Pantry. The combination of green and brown colors and the selected textures along with the long rectangular kitchen island perfectly positioned in the center, creates an inviting atmosphere and the sensation of a much bigger space.
During the renovation process, the D9 team focused their efforts on removing the existing kitchen island and replacing the existing kitchen island cabinets with new kraft made cabinets producing a visual contrast to the rest of the kitchen. The beautiful Quartz color river rock countertops used for this projects were fabricated and installed bringing a much relevant accent to the cabinets and matching the brown metal tile backsplash.
The old sink was replaced for a new farmhouse sink, giving the homeowners more space and adding a very particular touch to the rest of the kitchen.
