This space represents a recent collaboration on a spec house with a local homebuilder. Barbara Gilbert Interiors worked with the builder from start to finish on this project to build a neutral palette for future homeowners to turn this house into their home. The cerused oak dining table and chairs in the manner of Jean-Michel Frank represent Frank's gift to the twentieth century: elegantly plain furniture that bears the discrete neo-Baroque curve. Above hangs a faceted pendant lamp by Pierre Chareau. The startling scarlet of the walls is Donald Kaufman custom paint, its color inspired by Jim Dine's painting, "Bathrobe" which hangs against it.

This very large corner site was shrouded in tired and thirsty conventional lawn. Really a bland, uninteresting monoculture—impossible to maintain especially in light of our dwindling resources and our growing understanding about sustainable practices. We chose to approach this project not with the idea that existing lawn is bad, but with respect for what lawn has historically represented: a socially connective tissue. Instead of conventional grass requiring endlessly large amounts of water, chemicals and mowing, this lawn conversion shifts to a naturalistic native meadow mix splashed with wildflowers and drought tolerant native shrubs. It was the clients’ desire to be wrapped by a garden attracting native pollinators and beneficial insects. A wildlife photographer, they wanted the opportunity to open windows and doors and feel immediately connected to a coastal native environment. The handsome new stone walls, stairs and massive boulders became the structural framework containing the loose, coastal sage scrub plant community, holding the landscape together during the dormant months. As we continue to grow our acceptance of and appreciation for climate appropriate California gardens, and embrace the paradigm shift, let us graciously bid adieu to our home’s unsustainable velvet robe.

This door model is completely flush, with two diagonal grain directions. The rich Walnut finish pops against the clean white walls and existing décor. This door line can be modified and customized to any dimension and configuration necessary. Traditional swing doors are the main style seen throughout the home, with the exception of a couple pocket doors, double doors and even a bifold door unit. These clients are Disney FANATICS and desired a whimsical play space for their two young children. We wanted to give them all the whimsy they desired with a subtle Disney undertone. A hidden theme in each element to the design is derived from different Disney movies. For example, seven drawers under the window seat for the “Seven Dwarfs”, scalloped removable wallpaper behind the TV to represent “The Little Mermaid” fish scales, whimsical umbrellas on the custom storage unit are straight replicas of the “Mary Poppins” prop, a bold hair on hide to call to “The Lion King”, a small sofa that converts to a twin bed perfect for “Sleeping Beauty”. The hidden messages throughout the space lead to a unique design and story that the clients were enthralled to play along with!

This space transformation was small but has inspired many! ?? This non-profit location which houses hundreds of women and children includes a chapel where they gather for church, prayer, meetings and more. The hallway/lobby leading up to it was dark, outdated and uninspiring. I was challenged with creating a welcoming and visually appealing space while excluding anything that could be damaged/detached. Growing up in the church, I’ve always had a spiritual admiration for stained glass windows. Historically, they’ve been used to help tell stories of the Bible. Also, the light that passes through stained glass windows is often seen as a symbol of the divine light of God. This light can represent many different things, such as hope, truth, love, and life. It’s also a symbol of Christ himself, as he is often referred to as the “Light of the World.” ✝️?? This inspired my vision to create a stained glass window effect in combination with the mission’s lantern logo and brand colors. It is a direct reflection of how their services continue to reach thousands and change their lives forever.??✨ We had the low wall demolished and space re-painted. The final touch will be a salvaged and refinished old church pew that will provide extra seating here for guests.

A farmhouse coastal styled home located in the charming neighborhood of Pflugerville. We merged our client's love of the beach with rustic elements which represent their Texas lifestyle. The result is a laid-back interior adorned with distressed woods, light sea blues, and beach-themed decor. We kept the furnishings tailored and contemporary with some heavier case goods- showcasing a touch of traditional. Our design even includes a separate hangout space for the teenagers and a cozy media for everyone to enjoy! The overall design is chic yet welcoming, perfect for this energetic young family. James Latta Photography - As an interior designer, I liked my home but was not "in love" with it. I didn't feel in sync with the style and architecture despite compliments from friends and family. It was time for a change. I sold my Floating Home (see Sleepless in Portland: Houseboat Diary) and my La Quinta home (see Transitional Living, La Quinta) and downsized to a house that's a better fit. The home was lacking sufficient storage so I added a beverage center with storage cabinets and a butcher block countertop to the dining room. An Ikea table frame was powder coated in dark grey and fitted with a Cambria Quartz dining top. A matching quartz piece was added to create a kitchen bar seating area and includes a beautiful waterfall edge. Reclaimed wood square tiles were added to the kitchen pop up ceiling and the living room fireplace to add warmth and texture. Black and white photography of the local desert landscape frame the fireplace. Although the home is mainly grey, black and white, pops of red are a recurring theme thought the interior and exterior, including a red barn door at the kitchen pantry. I broke design rules and didnt take the "safe" route. Quirky accent items can be found throughout the home. These include a wall-mounted family accordion, framed movie quotes in one of the guest rooms, a custom canvas photo of my miniature schnauzer, and dragon print accent pillows throughout. A Tongue and Groove (T&G) wood ceiling transformed the master bedroom and a beautiful red area rug adds color and warmth. The result is DARING and yet comfortable. The backyard was completely renovated. Tons of white rock were removed and beautiful landscaping and lighting were added as well as an additional 500 square feet of pavers. A sun shade, red umbrellas, and patio misters create inviting seating areas for friends and family. Tongue and Groove wood was also added to the outdoor patio ceilings. A high end surround sound system and built in BBQ with patterned cement tiles complete this outdoor living space. The process was exhausting and time consuming but now that it is over, I am thrilled with the results. I now live in a home that nourishes my soul and better represents my style and tastes.
