This home was built in the 70's and as you can imagine has acquired a few "ailments" over the past 40 years, one of the more serious being the deterioration of the front entrance. The brick started to loosen over the years and eventually started to break apart completely, it got to the point that the family could not use the front entrance at all due to the safety hazard it represented. After interviewing with several contractors the home owners contacted David Sharp with DSLD Land Management and he was able to ease the tension and offer a solution that not only resulted in a beautifully restored front entrance but that also fit comfortably into their budget. The project took less than a week to complete and as you can imagine the home owners are thrilled with the final product!

Inspired by another mid-century modern home the client owned, this new residence represents a much larger 21st-century version built into the gently sloping hillside to take advantage of the sprawling hilltop views of the Sonoma valley. The quiet front facade leads guests into a formal entry that divides the house into private and public spaces. Rounding the corner into the great room, one is immediately hit by the breathtaking view that extends outward beyond the infinity pool and deck through a continuous wall of glass. In the opposite direction, each of the three bedrooms was designed with its own seating area and bathroom, creating private suites for family members and guests alike. The linear design and open, flowing living spaces provide almost every room with outdoor access to the expansive patio, protected from the Sonoma heat by deep overhangs. The wainscoting and cabinets are made from reclaimed white barn board. For this special job, no wood was joined, every edge was eased to look worn with a wavering block plane. Knots, bullet holes, gouges, old paint, saw marks and every other imperfection were embraced and showcased for the story they represented. Nothing looks new. The ceiling is treated with tongue and grooved, beveled cedar planks. There is nothing more incongruous than when a room is rustic but the sheetrock walls are left smooth - especially when the wall are left white. FINDING A STYLE THAT WORKS FOR YOU, YOUR SPACE and YOUR BUDGET We met with a couple who were very excited to buy a new place together. Their old place was a mix of his and her things and both had fairly different styles. Our job was to find pieces that best represented them as couple and that would fit nicely with their new space and budget. The new place was an old Candy Factory so it had a bit of an industrial style already, which we wanted to keep. We suggested a mid-century modern style, which would give the NEW place a more modern feel while still retaining the warmth, charm and history of the retro style pieces they were familiar with and had before. We suggested pieces that were more artistic and design classics such as The Shell Chair, The Eames Chair, Saarinen Table and other pieces that would emphasise the unique design of the space. One of the challenges we had was space and the need for storage. They both owned bikes and a lot of snow gear. Our suggestion was to get a storage bed, where the seasonal snow gear would fit perfectly without taking up too much space in the unit and a storage shed that would add colour and storage in a more artistic way without looking like a big, bulky piece of unsightly furniture. We also suggested incorporating the bikes on the wall as a piece of art…this was ideal to save space and support their lifestyle (as well as keep the bikes safe). The goal of this landscape design and build project was to create a nautical inspired patio at a residence in Dennis, MA. We chose to use natural cleft true blue rectangular bluestone pavers to represent the ocean. The client opted for matching grey patio furniture that blended in with the stone, and accented the patio with a white and blue floral border. Designed and built by Skyline Landscapes LLC.

The retailer’s soaring ceilings allowed Axis Mundi to create bedroom mezzanine spaces overlooking the living and dining rooms. Defining them with translucent glass welcomed natural light while retaining privacy. Downstairs, spaces bleed one into another, their basic monochromatic black-and-white palette acting as a unifying leitmotif. Yet each space feels distinct, with its own programmatic purpose, a feat largely achieved by varying floor and wall treatments—a graphic tile pattern in the entry, a red wall in the hall leading to the master suite, a colorful area rug in the living room. In the retailer’s heyday, the then-common saying, “Would Macy’s tell Gimbels?” implied the strategies the competitors kept from each other to gain the upper hand. Here, a structure iconic in its day also conceals something: a handsome, wholly contemporary repurposing that represents just the sort of innovation that made Gimbels the celebrated name that it was.
